"In its latest filing, Microsoft disclosed that for the March quarter, Microsoft's Surface tablets and accessories pulled in $494 million. But the company spent $539 million in chasing those sales..." Microsoft continues to spend more on the things than it's taking in. The writer here must be a Microsoft shill, though - he says since they're losing less on them now than earlier this year, they're on the way to profitability. "If nothing else, Microsoft's tablet line appears to be on the road to profitability, losing less money and generating more revenue than the same period a year ago. And, understandably, Surface revenue was lower during the first quarter than at the height of the holiday selling season." http://goo.gl/vUyG84 -- Press any key to continue or any other key to quit

So long as they spend more than they get, that's a good thing. It's the same thing that happened to their paid lackey, SCO, a few years back. How are they doing these days? -- Excuse my English. Most people just don't care enough about OSs to switch. Any distro running xfce or KDE will do everything a 'home user' would need, and more. Maybe even out of the box, in the case of Linux Mint (supposedly). But you'll definitely have to learn some new apps, and in some cases moving to new apps is a showstopper: How do you get your email out of Outlook into Claws or KMail? How do you play your .wma music files? You WILL end up at the terminal, and doing lots of Googling. And once you've done all that work, you find the cost savings are very small. If you're heavily invested in MS Office (user or developer), forget it. If you're a music pro like yourself, or accounting pro, etc, forget it. For system developers and server admins and OS geeks like us, it's got some great things going on.

Many do - look how many switch to OS X even though the cost is high. The average Mac costs 2.5x as much as the average PC, and that does not include the switch to different software and the like. Yet many, many people have made the switch. Compare that to desktop Linux, with its many distros compared to OS X's single distro... and desktop Linux is free and will run on your existing hardware. Almost nobody wants it. > Any distro running xfce or KDE will do everything a 'home user' would > need, and more. Maybe even out of the box, in the case of Linux Mint > (supposedly). I disagree. Users cannot do what they need / want with desktop Linux. They cannot connect to their iOS devices. They cannot use their quilting software. They cannot work with word processing documents with images. If they are using KDE, they cannot even open files if they have accidently moved them to the trash and dragged them out (just an example of the many bugs which lead to people not being able to get work done). If they move "up" the skill ladder some there is even more home users cannot do. Does not mean desktop Linux cannot do what *some* home users need / want, but as a general rule it is simply not true. > But you'll definitely have to learn some new apps, and in some cases > moving to new apps is a showstopper: But people do it all the time with OS X. > How do you get your email out of Outlook into Claws or KMail? > How do you play your .wma music files? > > You WILL end up at the terminal, and doing lots of Googling. Indeed. What is foul is that *no other operating system vender*, in the last twenty to thirty years, has been able to breach the OEM consumer-level computer market. No other vendor! Not even Apple, which sells "Jaguars" compared to the other vendors "Vegas". Even Chromebook represents a shift in MIcrosoft's key market. As for Linux, it isn't marketed, it generally requires the consumer to know how to find, download, burn to media, and install an operating system, and be willing to do that even at the cost of invalidating their warranty and losing functionality that they think they need Microsoft-related software for. So, Linux, given those hurdles, is doing much much better than, say Sam Adams Brewery's 1% of an actual market. Imagine that. Flounder has been spining that same sour record for many years. However, at first the clownfish was talking about "0.24%". Now the figure he intones about is near 10 times that. Sounds like progress to me. > Works fine for me and that's all that I care about. :-D > > Now, how about those shitty Surface sales? MS' marketing and product positioning let them literally take over the bulk of the consumer and business market. That's the power of marketing and sales. Those OEM contracts weren't just pulled out of thin air, many someones in marketing figured out how to bring those products to market and make us all want them. No geeks involved. > > No other vendor! Not even Apple, which sells "Jaguars" compared to the > other vendors "Vegas". Even Chromebook represents a shift in MIcrosoft's > key market. Yep, there are some chinks in the armor that is MS, but the war isn't even started good. > > As for Linux, it isn't marketed, it generally requires the consumer to know > how to find, download, burn to media, and install an operating system, and > be willing to do that even at the cost of invalidating their warranty and > losing functionality that they think they need Microsoft-related software > for. It doesn't help that there is so much fragmentation in the Linux community. It is an impossible task to successfully market a product so fragmented. No coherence in the marketing message. It also doesn't help that all too many Linux die-hards don't understand the power of marketing and a good sales force. Geeks can and do come up with some wonderful ideas and solutions, but in the end it is marketing that makes or breaks a product. > > So, Linux, given those hurdles, is doing much much better than, say > Sam Adams Brewery's 1% of an actual market. > > Imagine that. I think you guys are singing the death knell of the Surface line way too early. Interesting point that when I was exposing Linux's dismal 0.24 percent of market share, the Linux loons were calling the number fabricated despite various different organizations, at the time, reporting the same or similar number. So now they finally admit I was right. This is one reason why they are a slimy bunch. I guess, to satisfy filthy lying assholes, like "Hadron" and "Ezekiel", who will twist "it really ought to have USB ports" into "it will die", we should go on the record with the obvious. M$ has *no choice* but to be in the mobile computing market. Also, it's inevitable that Micro$oft's market share will increase, as more people switch to mobile computers, and take Windows with them. -- 'Or USB ports which "advocates" were claiming would contribute towards the death of the iPad. - trolling fsckwit "Ezekiel", lying shamelessly
