But one can quite easily install Home without using/needing a Microsoft account. That's what I did. Yes, the 'holes'/tricks have changed over time, but there still are several. And one can get rid of the Microsoft account after the fact and only use a local account.

It's an old story with Windows. For knowledgable users it's not too bad - they don't make as many mistakes and they have backups if something goes wrong. Once that update screws up the system, you or I would be able to restore it to functionality whether it is with a simple revert to an earlier time, a configuration change or a reinstall. However, most people wouldn't know what to do even if those were the only three options on the screen, they were explained in detail and they had to select one. I don't like to be pessimistic about the intellect of people, but I can't help it. No offense, but this part of the thread is not about "to get things working right again", but about Windows Home versus Pro (started by questions about the 'Pause updates' setting). And, as I mentioned, but Lawrence keeps stripping/ignoring, 'we', the users in the Windows 11 group (and similar groups) have not encountered the 'can no longer update' 'problem' alleged in the OP, so there is no need "to get things working right again". That should put things in perspective, for those who are willing to have an open mind. It gets quite boring, not to mention pathetic, when people who clearly do not use the stuff or/and know little about it, vent about all the terrible things which are allegedly 'wrong' with The Evil OS. As mentioned before, Windows is not a religion. You don't see 'us' coming up with all kinds of diatribes about everything 'wrong' about Linux. Some of us use both Windows and Linux and 'hence' follow crossposted threads like this. I have a (professional) Unix/UNIX background and still use Cygwin's GNU stuff, hence my interest. Bottom line: Advocacy is fine, zealotry not so much.

Paul already mentioned that you can tell Windows Update to 'Pause updates' for upto 5 weeks. I want to add that, at any time, you can extend that pause for again up to 5 weeks. On our recent trip to/in Australia, I didn't update my laptop for well over 3 months, till we got back home. As I mentioned, the total pause period is not just upto 5 weeks, but any series of periods, each upto 5 weeks. And Windows Update will only interfere with the session if the machine is not powerful enough for the download and partial installation happening in the background. The system will not restart and finish the installation, unless the sales person is so clueless as not to check/set the (non) active hours.

Any such 'users' are total idiots. The consumer versions of Windows are totally unfit for "mission-critical production work". And even business/enterprise versions need competent IT staff and procedures to properly manage such systems.
