Hmmm, seems like it has no option to save files by the page title, so

    Almond-Crusted Tilapia.pdf

becomes

    almond-crusted-tilapia.pdf

Not the end of the world, but not quite as nice. And no good way to fix it
given you cannot easily tell where the dashes should be (or the capitals,
really).

You can parse the html for the title and use it for the filename.
This is obviously from a local archive, but just to show the filename

Very cool. I think my wife would appreciate being able to do such a
thing. I'll show her the video later tonight. I'd love to be able to do
such a thing in Windows if it's possible.

While a fun exercise not sure I would ever use it. I do a fair amount with
recipes but I do not just want to download all the ones features on the home
page - instead I search and then find the one(s) I want.

Still, it was a fun challenge and I am glad Owl suggested it. Turns out the
wkhtmltopdf tool on OS X works well - even allows me to do the things I want
to do that were not a part of the initial challenge: select a word and get a
definition, for example.

Would you by any chance know of a decent, similar tool on Windows? I
imagine that there are tons but I hate sorting through the shit to find
the one or two decent applications.

There is a windows copy of wkhtmltopdf

<http://wkhtmltopdf.org/downloads.html>

You would need to script the getting of the URLs and the editing of them to
get the correct ones, as well as getting good file names from the <title>
tag.

I should probably start playing with scripts one day. I used to make
batch files for everything back in the day and then stopped altogether.

One of the things I like about OS X is Automator and its scripting. Shell
scripting is often better and faster but also harder to learn - and does not
tap into GUI programs very well (though it depends on the program, some do
allow it).

With Automator you can combine shell scripting, JavaScript, AppleScript, and
premade actions. That is what I used to come up with my solution.

Only have played a little more with it, but much more impressed with
wkhtmltopdf than I was before. Now that I can get it to allow me to select
the text and look things up and the like that is MUCH better.

Not really, if you're already running it from a script to get them
all.

That ability may come from the --print-media-type option. I've been using
the one from the repos, and it doesn't have that option. I can't select
text using mine. At least not body text. Earlier, before stripping
javascript, the link text, etc., was selectable. I remember at one
point being able to select text, but I can't remember what procedure
I used then.

Odd. I need the --print-media-type option to get it to save "correctly",
without the junk on top and bottom. But when I use it then I get great
output.

The only options i'm using are -q and -n. Paper size didn't help
speed it up any.

Weird how it works differently on different systems. So be it.

Well, let's face it, there's no way that the 2% of the market that
uses GNU/Linux is always going to have the most and best applications
written for it. In fact, it usually will not.

Believe it or not, some filthy Linux-haters have claimed that this
means that GNU/Linux users have less "freedom" than Windows users!
