#375612 — Manjaro

FromMarek Novotny <marek.novotny@marspolar.com>

SubjectManjaro
Message-ID<LdudnVxKh_xazmTKnZ2dnUU7-TPNnZ2d@giganews.com>
I've been playing with Manjaro since last night. Aside from anything bad
happening I'm pretty happy with this so far. I started with it on my
desktop System 76 machine and liked it enough to put it on my main
laptop, the M4800. So far I'd even opine that this might be a better
starter Linux than Mint or Ubuntu. I'll have to use it every day for a
while to form a solid opinion but so far this is impressing me.

I've heard some bad things about Manjero. I actually heard that it's a
meme/broken OS made by people who don't know what they're doing. A proof
commonly given to that point is their TLS cert expiring and them giving
on t he front page of their website instructions on how to change the
date in the computer to 4 days before the cert expired.

Outside of that, never tried it personally.

What specifically do you find to be superior compared to LinuxMint?
Which desktop did you use with LinuxMint / Manjaro?
How is the look of Manjaro out of the box?
I've been thinking of trying Manjaro.

It's based on Arch not Ubuntu.
It's a rolling release, so unlike Mint or Ubuntu you're going to get
later versions of everything.

> Which desktop did you use with LinuxMint / Manjaro?

I'm actually using xfce for both.

> How is the look of Manjaro out of the box?

Their theme is a little more to my taste for the most part. However,
Mint in my opinion makes a more consistent look and feel across
applications.

> I've been thinking of trying Manjaro.

The install is hands down the fastest install I've ever seen. You're
asked almost nothing and you get a basic install in very little time. I
ran the non-free version and it installed nVidia for me on both
machines. The System 76 tower is running a GTX 750 and the M4800 is
running a Quadro K1100M.

Thank you Marek. I'm going to give it a try in a VM and see what
happens.

I looked to replace Ubuntu several years. Manjaro is my distro of

It was the first Linux that was able to detect all of the hardware on
this laptop of mine so I respect it. It looks like a pretty decent
rolling distribution and I should give it another try though I have to
wonder why it doesn't have a Gnome flavour.

It does have a Gnome flavor:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/manjarolinux/files/community/

Manjaro is what I recommend people who cannot deal with the CLI for installation and administration...

I prefer text based install of Manjaro. I use Manjaro not because it
have GUI tools , rather because of dedicated team that listens to
community.

Yeah, I noticed and am downloading it now. I'd love to see what their

Well, I tried it a few hours ago. Whether I try to boot it in standard
or non-free mode, it doesn't even make it to the desktop. This
hardware really doesn't like Linux.

I have just finished installing it on my ThinkPad T450, which has my
Sierra WWAN card. That had a slight issue which is now resolved. I
pushed up to kernel 4.7.5-1 and that seems to have solved it. Though had
I done a completely cold boot before that might have solved it. The sign
of a problem was that my mouse wasn't coming on for at least 15 seconds.

dmesg showed some problems with a USB device. Even though this is a PCIe
device the modem itself is a USB device. So I thought the modem not
being addressed properly was causing the mouse to come on later than
normal. After a cold start the mouse worked just fine and so I checked
the modem and sure enough, it was recognized.

So Manjaro on my ThinkPad T450, System 76 Ratel and Dell M4800. Really
liking this a lot. My System 76 machine and another tower are test
machines. I'll likely be removing it from that as new things come and I
test those. I think my T450 for sure will stick with Manjaro. I like the
feel of it a lot. Really still liking XFCE a lot too.

Well, I think this distro may well have got me off rhel. It's been 2.5
years and I have not found anything I liked more than rhel all that
time. Mint 18 likely would have done it if not Manjaro. Mint 18 is
pretty darn nice, but this is even better in my opinion.

I'll sit down and start writing a little cheat sheet so I can learn
pacman. I'll need to play around with it so I customize the UI just a
little. As is it already mostly suits me quite well.

I'm pretty jazzed about the later releases of things though. Without me
compiling my own this is already on Vim 8.0.5. Version 8 is pretty new.
tmux is on version 2.2. Typically I have to compile it myself to get a
nice late version like that. As long as I don't see random issues
popping up I'll stick with this. Been 36 hours and smooth so far.
Getting the Sierra card working is nice. I love having built in LTE. Not
a deal breaker to not have it, but I sure do like having it.

Same problem here but I am trying to run it in a VM. I'll try on bare
hardware when I get a chance. All I get is a black screen with no login.

Bah humbug ... not native Mate version. :)

(I've heard good things about Manjaro and I know Arch is solid -- just
more work than I want to put into it at this time.)

This is pretty simple. That's why I am saying I think this might be good
replacement for Ubuntu / Mint. xfce is really nice. A gnome 2 guy should
like it just fine. And you get to learn Pacman... :) No rpm or dpkg. I
have a whole new set of command options to learn. You might like
rolling... :)

I've run Arch in the past and used Pacman -- and ran Xfce when I used
Vector Linux. I'm happy where I am with Linux Mint. But I am thankful
that (I believe) a guy from Arch is the one who started the Mate project.

pacman is fast. simple. efficient ... there is also yaourt which is
wrapper around pacman and AUR. It uses same options as pacman to
simplify things.
I forgot when I last used external repo on Manjaro.

A n00b might find yaourt/AUR a bit intimidating since it presents the
user a terminal window, which scares some people. But it is a necessity
for some apps, like Chrome or Pan.

I've been using Manjaro for a few months on a second machine, and I like
it a lot.
