With Adobe Acrobat running under Windoze or Mac really easy, it shrinks the files automatically looking pretty good. In Linux? It's looking also pretty good after scanning e.g. with XSane but the file size is sooo HUGE, even in 300 dpi A4 page... No easy way to shrink/size optimize this in the FOSS buzzword, couldn't the geeks focus on something useful and practical instead of changing the look of the GUIs and messing with functionality all the time?

Even the "lowly" Preview has a "Reduce File Size" feature which is not robust but works fairly well. When Owl worked on HIS challenge about downloading recipes as PDFs, it turned out his PDFs were MUCH larger than the ones produced by OS X, and on OS X the text was selectable and with a simple contextual menu gave you options for looking up terms, word counts, or whatever else you added to the text services of OS X. Here is an example: <https://youtu.be/_J4PppWroWY> > In Linux? It's looking also pretty > good after scanning e.g. with XSane but the file size is sooo HUGE, even in > 300 dpi A4 page... There are a number of solutions... I have not used these, but found them with a quick search: <https://techwalla.com/content/reduce-pdf-file-size-linux> <http://www.alfredklomp.com/programming/shrinkpdf> <http://wp.me/pdZH8-f> -- * OS X / Linux: What is a file? <http://youtu.be/_dMbXGLW9PI> * Mint MATE Trash, Panel, Menu: <http://youtu.be/C0y74FIf7uE> * Mint KDE working with folders: <http://youtu.be/7C9nvniOoE0> * Mint KDE creating files: <http://youtu.be/N7-fZJaJUv8> * Mint KDE help: <http://youtu.be/3ikizUd3sa8> * Mint KDE general navigation: <http://youtu.be/t9y14yZtQuI> * Mint KDE bugs or Easter eggs? <http://youtu.be/CU-whJQvtfA> * Easy on OS X / Hard on Linux: <http://youtu.be/D3BPWANQoIk> * OS / Word Processor Comparison: <http://youtu.be/w6Qcl-w7s5c>

Takuya Saitoh wrote: > With Adobe Acrobat running under Windoze Crazy troll talk. All my scans get uploaded to vsftp ftp server on my Ubuntu desktop PC from multi-page scanner as full colour jpg. I plonk it into Libreoffice and job done. I can export as pdf if I want. I can insert dozens of high definition .jpg into Libreoffice and it doesn't blink. Still starts up in 1 second. Must be that Linux superiority speed thing doing all that talking again ;) Hmmm... an idea brewing :) Thing to do is write a python daemon to upload all the files from ftp server to apache web server. There a web app in php and MySQL can be used present the scans as thumbs. (Click on thumb to get the full size jpg.) Then from there to sort the scans into neat categories such as invoices, statements, bills, certs, correspondence, brochures, reminders etc. Easy to shred the paper then and make the office more electronic and paperless. And make the paperwork instantly accessible. I seen a bank use such a system but it was seriously stingy for the storage allotted for each scan (which was intentionally low resolution). With 6TB disks, I doubt it will fill with full colour scan papers in a lifetime :) http://www.ubuntu.com http://www.livecdlist.com http://www.distrowatch.com

You are a *fscking* pdf illiterate appile/microshaft troll selling microshit appile shiiiteware. You were already told the image is ftp'd as a jpg which is compressed already. (The compression and dpi is set in the scanner.) So why is your appile microshit shiiiteware shrinking file sizes and loosing image quality? That is a negative selling point in the world of 6TB disks for shiiiteware made by appile and microshit.

Am I to assume that you have scanned documents (invoices, bills, etc.) as JPEG files? Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! That must NEVER be done! Never! JPEG compression uses the discrete Fourier transform (DCT) on segmented image block elements and then discards the high frequency components. On ordinary images, like photographs, this can work very well. But on text documents, the sharp edges between text and background represent points of discontinuity, and this will generate severe ringing artifacts with JPEG compression. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! I've seen it all many times before. Very few know what the fuck they are doing when it comes to image processing.

In the mean time I'm using scanned jpgs and it works fine thanks. I am totally agnosticalized on this. If pngs or gifs work any best, I use that.

Adobe pretty much owns the professional graphics industry. Gimp is a great program and for the typical end user there are many programs one can use to manipulate graphics and not require a college degree to use. Manipulating graphics files via the command line is so 90's. Include that on your CV and it will be put in the dinosaur reject pile. -- Meat Why do they call you Meat? Is it because you are so big? Yep. You catch em and I'll stretch em. My college nickname was "The Stretch-Her"

I run into this as well. I totally agree. I've been doing this for over 11 years now and I have met exactly one competent artist.
