Why, because you say so? This newsgroup is not entitled 'comp.os.desktop.linux.advocacy'. As such, attempts to constrain the discussion to the desktop are goal post moves. > To clarify, I am not saying that productivity, efficiency, and > error-reduction are not important on servers and elsewhere, but the focus of > the P-E-E discussions has been on the desktop. But not in this thread, the OP even addressed this limitation. My suggestion: Start your own thread if you want to confine it to the desktop. Good luck with that ;) > I do not think it is > contention that Linux offers this on the server, super computer, and other > places. One obvious question is: Why has Linux taken over most of the rest of the computing world if those desktop creators are so great as P-E-E? Does the average user not care about it? Sure seems like it, huh?

It is the market Linus Torvalds cares most about. Just some quotes from him
on the topic:
Linus Torvalds:
-----
Linus Torvalds: Well, I don't know about broader adoption,
but the Linux desktop is why I got into Linux in the first
place. I mean, I have never, ever cared about really anything
but the Linux desktop.
...
But I have never, ever even run a Linux server and I don¹t
even want to; it¹s not what I'm interested in. I'm more of a
desktop guy. I've always used Linux as a workstation person.
So and I think I see that as not just me. I think a huge
amount of the developers see Linux the same way because it
turns out that while, yes, maybe servers is a huge market,
when you actually look at developers, what developers
interact with all the time is their workstation, their
desktop and that¹s the area where you really eat your own dog
food and where you really end up seeing the fruits of your
labor.
-----
I have never, ever cared about really anything but the Linux desktop.
-----
I think, the big reason is just desktop is the hardest market to
enter. It's partly because of technical reasons. Desktops are
different from pretty much every other market in that they do many
different things.
-----
The BBC had to prioritise building the service around PCs
because, according to BBC figures, around 90% of computers
use Microsoft's Windows operating system, he added.
Macs account for 9% of the market while the open source
system Linux accounts for 0.8%.
-----
In fact, the main goal of Linux might be called usability. I want
the kernel to remain clean as far as the implementation is
concerned, but when it really matters, a kind of pragmatic approach
has generally been the main design issue: the most important thing
is that it works well and people (which most emphatically includes
me) want to use it.
-----
I started Linux as a desktop operating system. And it's the only
area where Linux hasn't completely taken over. That just annoys the
hell out of me.

I find it hilarious that you-know-who is all palsy-walsy with the heinous "DFS", yet bitches about his imaginary "advocate herd" treating him like a bozo. As far as the desktop goes, OP made it clear that he was talking about computing in general. Of course, trolls want to continue to (try to) frame the discussion in terms of the desktop. That's because: it's all they have to cling to, and even then, their grip is slipping. ObLinuxDesktop: What if someone wants to run pan on Windows? You ever try to make that happen? Talk about your clown fiestas... And as you can see from my sig, even the most egregious wintrolls will occasionally admit that Linux is the standard by which other OS's are judged. When once asked about his goals for Linux, Linus said, "World domination, fast." Guess what? -- -v "Desktops, workstations and servers are and Microsoft is doing very well. AS well as Linux." -"Slimer"

From the OP:
-----
Productivity, efficiency, and error-reduction has become tool or a
myth if you will to attack Linux. It was created a while back by
our local mythomanaic to spew incredible amount his shit. There
has been no credible, impartial study done on P-E-E with common
criteria to evaluate all the OSs on equal footing. Until that
day, any claims against Linux using P-E-E is nothing but laughable.
-----
I am the one who commonly used the phrase "productivity, efficiency, and
error-reduction" and my comments in that area deal with the desktop. He was
pushing an attack and trolling me with name calling ("mythomanaic") saying
my claims - ABOUT THE DESKTOP - were wrong.
Of course, he never actually bothered to show that... and when I noted my
comments were well supported (contrary to his claims) the goal posts were
moved away from the desktop.
Easy as that. Really... just look at the OP. All right there.
But even though I just directly quoted the OP and explained why you are
wrong, I think we can safely say you will never admit to your error. Nor the
stalker. He HATES when I am right... which is why he is so often so filled
with hate and anger. :)

For the record: Vallor posted shortly after I posted this, snipped most of
my content, lied about me taking things out of context (as he showed
essentially none of mine) and went out of his way to prove me correct.
He, as a herd member, feels he cannot admit when he is shown to be wrong by
someone who is not in the herd, esp. someone who has spoken honestly about
Linux and open source. He feels the need to lie, so he did.
And he will keep lying. It is just what the herd does.

For whose record? People that can't comprehend what they've read? ;)
> Vallor posted shortly after I posted this, snipped most of
> my content,
You didn't actually have any "content". As far snipping, you should talk, being that you did what you accused him of in this thread. If we were to allow that you can comprehend what you've read, the "record" shows:
* You tried to pretend the OP was (in his first post) focusing on the desktop, when, in fact his only comment on it was regarding how people like you do that.
* You're having a delusion where you believe you're a desktop.
Of course, we know you can't comprehend what you've read and the second point, silly as it is, contains all the "proof" one needs ;)

He's just doing what I'm doing, giving you what you have repeatedly asked for, proof of your "wrongs"... and you're whining about it. What else is new <shrug>.

It's still up there at the top (ironically snipped into place by you), a single sentence in its own paragraph. Notably, it begins with the words: "As far as..." Hint: That little 3 word phrase denotes context, you know, the thing you keep proving you have no understanding of. (snip more sputtering by Snit)
