Apple has a open source kernel too AFAIK. And I go for libre more than I go for linux alone, both kernels are good, in the sense that they are mainly open, but both are being abused with frankly evil proprietary-ness, including proprietary firmware in their mainline tree. Google are running into trouble with the EU, by forcing vendors to bundle proprietary apps (that you can't uninstall) with their operating system, and they tend to track you relentlessly. The build system for android is frankly, horrible, even if it is mostly free. And the SDK binaries have a restrictive licence. The problem is that the majority of people cannot be bothered to install something that respects their freedom and privacy, over what they're given, for various reasons, including fear of what they're given breaking and lack of technical skill in the area of computing. Furthermore, vendors are only releasing the source code when they have to, rather than to make their products safer and better in the long run. Even if you run GNU/Linux-Libre (without the proprietary firmware), you tend not to be safe as the BIOS/bootloader tends to be proprietary. If people cannot be bothered, or don't have the technical skill to install a new operating system, they are unlikely to update their bootloader where a free option exists (very very rarely). So the main problem I see, is getting vendors on side of freedom and privacy. Indeed, Google using the linux kernel is a good step forward, but there is much much further to go if we are to have a more ethical world in computing.

Google has an investment arm which has branched out everywhere. And so it has become confusing because "Google" is a search company. I mistakenly assumed I was talking to a human being, I had to remind myself I'm dealing with a lying, clueless Linux advocate.
