Instead of storing settings, preferences and configuration data all over the place you put it all into one centralized mini-database. Basically, think of something like SQLite to store all this in one place. I don't think data integrity is the problem. It's needless complexity. The problem is that Microsoft screwed the pooch in their implementation. It's way, way too complicated for what it needs to be. I literally have several 100's of keys like: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components\4A191448F4F0161448230045E3B993CB that have one single REG_SZ entry of "C7FAF248FE053644B9F826221E83D4D7" that is set to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\Lib\x64\msdrm.lib" This part is crazy. If they just kept it simple then it wouldn't be the complicated mess that exists today.

Some app may have made changes to the registry that made the system unbootable. This means that the current settings are preventing the machine from booting. Not that the registry has suddenly become corrupted and is no longer readable. The previous versions/restore-points are there to roll-back to in case the user wants to revert to the previous state. It's a problem with the contents - not the integrity of the registry itself.

It has been proven, long ago, that the registry doesn't affect performance. A load of temporary files, however, will and doing a routine disk cleanup in Windows (same as in Linux) would be a good idea. -- Slimer

The larger it is, the more memory is needlessly consumed It might be loaded into memory and therefore take more RAM, but it doesn't really influence the way things run for people. In other words, you won't actually experience a slowdown as a larger registry does nothing more than take more RAM but not more CPU cycles. However, if ever it DOES become an issue for anyone, it can be cleaned with a variety of free tools. However, most publications have shown that if there IS an improvement in performance from a cleaner registry, it will be about 1 or 2% or 1 or 2 seconds less time to boot. -- Slimer

Over 4 years the ram monitor on win7 on boot up hasn't changed but by a couple of kbytes. -- My problem is that I don't have enough middle fingers.
