Someone at Valve seems to > think they can get into this market so time will tell. I think that what Valve did with Linux gaming is pretty cool. Their move to port Steam over (as well as their games) allowed third-parties to finally see Linux as a potential gaming platform. The fact that they're still pushing the Steambox is evidence that they have no idea how little they have though. It's nice that Valve made a few decent games over the years, but it is a small amount compared to what the others have made and their belief that they're good enough to sell a Steam machine is similar to Nokia's belief that they can sell an N-Gage. Do any of you remember how successful the N-Gage was? -- Charmed Tuna

That's true though I don't play online against others. But I have been getting 2 games free a month for the Xbone, now I'll get 4 with the Xbox 360 compatibility. And they have sales of some pretty good stuff at pretty good discounts just for members. Overall a good value. As is PS Plus from Sony. -- Lloyd

If they are going to be successful they need to look at what's already working. Even the consoles have difficulty selling just the machine which is why almost all the units sold include at least one great game and sometimes two. The reality is that the only console only sales are to replace completely shot consoles. But based solely on the sparse ads about Steam Machines, it doesn't appear that even one great game will come with them, nor is it clear that the Steam Controller will either. -- Lloyd

Steam Machines are facing one huge uphill battle to garner enough sales going against the much better priced consoles and the broad range of Windows PC gamers. Well, that's too bad, because we all know that bickering committees are the best way to determine which products are produced and offered to the public. Bickering committees are best at allocating resources, and best at determining the proper levels of choice, quality, and prices. I already don't expect them to sell.
They are expensive low profile machines.
Much like a Mac, they are more expensive than they need to be.

The 'market' has been deciding for all these years. But you know it costs real money for them to bring the Steam Machines to market, right? So do you think one person decided if that was the right thing to do? Or, and this is more likely, a 'committee' decided on whether there was a real market and if so, is it big enough and profitable enough to invest in. That's how businesses bigger than the mom and pop ones do things. Not some pie in the sky crap you linux loons think exists. The good part for those hardware makers that are taking the chance on Steam boxes is they can be repurposed as Windows machines at the drop of a dime if things don't pan out. IOW, the risk for the mfgs isn't all that great after all. -- Lloyd

I applaud them for having the guts to try. When the dust settles after the holiday buying season we'll see if the gamble paid off. I wonder what the cut-line is for sales that they have decided will tell them the success or failure of the project? While I find the gaming consoles to be more than good enough, I know lots of younger folks that are always looking for more and better ways to get their gaming fix. For the holidays this is the way things look: Microsoft will bring some Xbox 360 compatibility to the Xbox One. That should result in moving some die hard Xbox 360 owners to the Xbox One. How many remains to be seen. Windows PC Gaming is still the elephant in that room. I don't expect the Steam Machines to really impact that much. My reasoning is that the Windows PC gaming community is a very broad one, ranging from the casual gamers that can use almost any Windows machine to play on, to those that are more 'into' it and will opt for more powerful machines. That's a huge spread! Steam Machines has to hope they can attract many of those Windows PC gamers. That is not going to be easy! Based only on what I've seen it appears that the entry price is going to be a bit on the high side @$650 for a machine that won't do anything but run SteamOS out of the box. Given that consoles are around the $400 mark with at least one game included, that could be off putting. -- Lloyd
