Visited two of the weirdest places in California, Salvation Mountain and Slab City - It's no wonder California is called the land of fruits and nuts. My parents and I also looked around a retirement community in Warner Springs. They want out of Ramona since it's become yet another mini- Tijuana like so many other smaller towns in SoCal. The closest I got to visiting Mexico was driving to San Ysidro, which is right at the border. You can buy Mexican junk and get some really good food without having to put your life in your hands by actually crossing the border. No way would I think of doing that, it's fucking dangerous down there anymore.

I liked the desert a lot (my last time in California). I also liked the
ocean (when we took the kids down to see it). Unfortunately a lot had
changed in Laguna Beach from the time when I lived there. It used to be a
small town -- actually a row of separated small towns -- and now it's all
one long strand of "town" ("city," whatever) along the ocean. All the
fields I used to run around in where filled up with houses. I guess a lot
changes in 50 years.
But next to DFW, it's paradise. I think if I moved back to California I
would choose the high desert now -- probably Yucca Valley -- the breeze
was cool in the evening there. And, as I mentioned, it's just an hour or
two away from the city, the mountains or the beach.

That's why I like Borrego Springs - the enjoyment of desert living but
you're still not far from amenities. It's smack dab in the middle of the
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and there are no chain or big box stores.
But if you just have to shop Walmart, Poway is just an hour's drive.
You're also near Julian, Ramona, Escondido, etc.

Looks nice -- checked out some Google images. I've never been down in
that area, but the mountains don't look a whole lot different than those
around Yucca Valley. More green in Borrego Springs with the golf courses.
It's amazing when you look at the sand and the sparse vegetation you
think ugly but, after you've been there a few weeks, the desert just
completely grows on you and you don't even notice the brown. When my wife
came down to Yucca Valley with the kids (inlaws helped move them down)
she thought it was one the ugliest places she'd ever seen. When we left,
none of us wanted to go.

If you live in a region where the resource is scarce, it is a good idea to consider things such as the purification of raw sewage and a conservative laws to prevent overuse. Here in Quebec, even though water is abundant, we've been purifying our water and controlling its use for decades. I was surprised to discover that places like California don't. -- A.M

I approached life in California rather like I looked at living in Florida. In Fl, odds are you'll eventually experience the impact of a hurricane. In CA, you might have to forego washing your car or watering your lawn for a few months. :-D (I didn't mention earthquakes because San Diego isn't really near any fault lines predicted to break loose in a major way)
