Well, yes and no. It is great for those that want to and can do the
actual servicing themselves. Not so good for the vast majority of
consumer users.

And think about this. If those parts warranties were so much better, why
do most companies, large and small, not buy parts and have them built, or
contract with some company to do just that? They usually either have an
IT department or a servicer available. But yet they don't for the most
part.

The deal may or may not be better, it is a very mixed bag. And if that
shop is doing assembly and selling similarly equipped stuff it will most
often be higher in cost. That assumes of course, that they have figured
out how to stay in business at all. Those small shops are getting fewer
and smaller seemingly every day unfortunately.

The parts longer warranty is only valuable to those that can do their own
servicing.

Luckily, I'm not the average consumer.

In one company where I contracted, they needed roughly 280 machines,
which I built myself. In another larger client, I was part of a team
that first developed application suites by groups for group testing and
later deployment. In those cases, where 18,000 desktops ultimately get
deployed, we would work with Dell to develop an image. So Dell,
effectively steps into that role.

In the past I have done the same with Compaq before HP bought them out.

Nope. Typically I do my own assembly. When they do it they actually
charge me less. How many machines have you built from a DIY shop? I've
personally built at least a couple thousand by now. I can tell you
building just one is cheap. Building 280 at once, is even cheaper
because I get a volume discount and even spare parts are thrown in for
free.

Go to NewEgg for a second or Amazon for that matter. Look up a Video
card, or a Samumg SSD, or whatever. Then look at all those reviews.
Typically around 5,000 or more customers that took the time to write a
review. Imagine all those that didn't bother. But those buying those
loose parts aren't terrified of opening their box and swapping a drive
or a video card.

I'm sure you've heard the expression that there is a kid on every block
that can probably fix your computer. Look at all the gamers out there
that build their own PCs for high performance gaming.

Plenty of young people are doing amazing things in the computer sciences
these days. It's a growing enterprise.

gaming systems is not apple's target demographic nor is it a lot of
companies.

it's a very specialized niche and apple is more than happy to not
bother with it.

very few are building their own computers and that number is dropping
as mobile becomes vastly more popular.

you don't see anyone building their own laptops, tablets or phones.

So on topic of target audiences, who is the target for Linux? What does
the Linux user want?

:) Actually, I did see a few of those. And they were big, and
interesting. But I take your point. Desktops on the other hand, I
disagree. And servers, oh I see those being built by joe-somebody all
the time.

No. :)
If you look at sales figures from the various companies and their
financials you'll see that it is laptops/hybrids and mobile that are
garnering the bulk of sales these days. A quick stop at the big box
store will show some indication. Usually about 20+ laptops/hybrids on
display and maybe 2 towers but more often just one.

Why in the world would they want to do that? I mean we used to do that,
but Compaq's servers were just superb. I know they are HP's now, but
have they changed that much?

As to the home-built laptops, yeah I remember when those started coming
out. Not very good and all pretty damned heavy. Even compared to the
not so light laptops of those days.

Unfortunately, yes. HP has acquired the Fiorina syndrome of trying to
make the parts as cheap as possible. Spending more for better hardware
from HP usually solves the problem, especially in the server arena.

Right now, HP has split off the PC and server divisions where HP keeps
the servers as it is more profitable for them. Who they sold the PC
division to, I don't know. This was discussed over in the c.o.v newsgroup.

I went to school on the Proliants so we could be a service center for
them. I remember that they didn't even talk about the small ones we were
selling at all. Can't remember which model was the lowest they
discussed, but it was one ass-kicking server.

I did a lot of Proliants as well. Typically with 5 drives. The OS was a
mirror and the other 3 were RAID 5 was pretty standard. But then servers
got bigger and bigger until the concept of centralized storage, either
the fiber connected arbitrated loop, point to point or diff SCSI started
sharing a large array amongst two or more servers.

Then we say NAS, iSCSI, etc. And servers went to 1u, then we got blades,
and now we have blades virtualizing many servers with large storage
arrays.

Now, OpenStack, GlusterFS, Ceph and Docker containers. It's all running
on Linux, and all open source.

The high ends were also very disaster and fault tolerant servers. A bit
pricey, but you get what you pay for. There used to be a YouTube video
of one of their servers getting blown apart while it was doing a
database commit. No data was lost.

Most Linux users are IT professionals who want a cheap server operating
system, which is where Linux excels.

Only so far if you don't need disaster tolerance.
There may be a few vendors that sell these, but I know HP is one of
those vendors, and it isn't cheap.

There is some truth in the saying, "You get what you pay for." ; )

They were using OpenVMS last I recall. The os license is pretty steep tho.

First, thank you!! And second, so how relevant is Photoshop to the
average Linux user?

That's a loaded question.

there is no target audience. that's why it's the way it is. it has no
focus.

add up the market share of all of the major manufacturers and you get a
small slice left over for 'other', some of which are noname prebuilts,
leaving very little for actual custom built systems.

in addition to that, desktops, which is the only type of system that
can be custom built, have long been eclipsed by laptops which is now
being eclipsed by smartphones and tablets.

In other words, there is more choice, a clear advantage over the "one
size fits all" compromise that Windows tries to be.

(Hopefully you won't embarrass yourself by saying something like
"Windows popularity proves that that's the way people like it.")

Microsoft does do an "OK" job of serving the middle of the desktop OS
market, just as MacDonald's does a decent job of serving the middle of
the burger market. In neither case is the product "the best", but
they are "good values" for the core of the market. What's whacked is
Microsoft's controlling of 90 freaking percent of their market, which
simply does not happen if there is healthy competition and real
consumer choice.

other way around.

linux has *less* choice because of the sheer lack of quality software
and lack of focus on the product. what little that does exist on linux
is mostly garbage.

windows had (past tense) 90% because of microsoft's illegal business
tactics.

people bought windows because other choices were squelched, not because
windows was any good.

that's changed and now there are many alternatives including mac, ios,
android and chromebooks. when given a choice, people are choosing
something *other* than windows in increasing numbers.

meanwhile, linux desktop share is dropping. nobody wants it for the
desktop. it's nice for servers but that's about it, and nobody is going
to get a laptop to be a server.

So I'm just completely wrong, and my point above has zero merit, huh?

OK, "Snit" Jr.

>linux has *less* choice because of the sheer lack of quality software

"Mac users have the choice to run Photoshop and such, and Linux users
don't, therefore Mac users have more choice than Linux users."

Really? Is that the definition of choice? The huge variety that
Linux offers (both "ready to run" and the limitless possibilities that
being open-source offers) count for nothing, in the "choice
sweepstakes"?

Your attempt to limit the definition of choice, to the one area where
your beloved Mac has the advantage, has been rejected.

>and lack of focus on the product.

Your unwillingness to concede that the "lack of focus" brings "pros"
(choice) as well as "cons" (increased support costs) shows you to be a
unworthy person.

Funny that I've yet to see a decent Mac defender, in here.

sure looks like it.

yep. simple concept.

the source to photoshop is not available nor is the source to just
about every other commercial app, which means you can't run them in
linux.

what is available is at best, a poor imitation, such as the gimp. the
gimp's own roadmap shows that they have no plans to offer major
features that photoshop had 20+ years ago.

mac users can run everything a linux user can run *and* apps such as
photoshop, lightroom, etc.

in other words, more choice, the most of any platform.

and then there's driver support. hardware makers rarely offer linux
drivers, so there's less choice on hardware too.

that's why linux is a bad choice for desktops.

> Your attempt to limit the definition of choice, to the one area where
> your beloved Mac has the advantage, has been rejected.

it's reality.

everything has pros and cons. linux is no different.

for a server, linux is a good choice (but not the only one). the lack
of photoshop does not matter to a server.

for the desktop, linux is a horrible choice.
