Show the proof of what? Nope. In the real world example I ran into, which was years ago so I cannot be that specific, it ended up being an incompatibility between a certain range of serial numbers for the sound card. They had a small difference that they figured would not impact anything - but it did. So once it was eventually tracked down it was clear it was the sound card - but you were looking to blame the motherboard (or the user for having incorrect settings on the motherboard!). -- * OS X / Linux: What is a file? <http://youtu.be/_dMbXGLW9PI> * Mint MATE Trash, Panel, Menu: <http://youtu.be/C0y74FIf7uE> * Mint KDE working with folders: <http://youtu.be/7C9nvniOoE0> * Mint KDE creating files: <http://youtu.be/N7-fZJaJUv8> * Mint KDE help: <http://youtu.be/3ikizUd3sa8> * Mint KDE general navigation: <http://youtu.be/t9y14yZtQuI> * Mint KDE bugs or Easter eggs? <http://youtu.be/CU-whJQvtfA> * Easy on OS X / Hard on Linux: <http://youtu.be/D3BPWANQoIk> * OS / Word Processor Comparison: <http://youtu.be/w6Qcl-w7s5c>

To an extent, perhaps. But reading Snit's response, a guy who holds a Master in IT and has a business working with/fixing computers, it doesn't sound like it happens all that often.

Agreed. To be fair it has become far less common over the years for me to hear of or run into such things in terms of hardware - but it does happen. And it happens in other areas, too. With the recent video I posted showing the need for multiple clicks to get the Task View to activate in Windows 10 Tablet Mode. Is this the fault of Parallels or Microsoft? Well, it happens consistently with the combination: the Parallels support team was able to replicate it on multiple machines. But it also has been shown that the same or at least similar bug has been reported outside of Parallels. Seems a conflict with some drivers and Windows 10. Are the drivers not following something they should? Is Windows 10 defective in some ways that shows up only under very specific circumstances? Hard to say. -- * OS X / Linux: What is a file? <http://youtu.be/_dMbXGLW9PI> * Mint MATE Trash, Panel, Menu: <http://youtu.be/C0y74FIf7uE> * Mint KDE working with folders: <http://youtu.be/7C9nvniOoE0> * Mint KDE creating files: <http://youtu.be/N7-fZJaJUv8> * Mint KDE help: <http://youtu.be/3ikizUd3sa8> * Mint KDE general navigation: <http://youtu.be/t9y14yZtQuI> * Mint KDE bugs or Easter eggs? <http://youtu.be/CU-whJQvtfA> * Easy on OS X / Hard on Linux: <http://youtu.be/D3BPWANQoIk> * OS / Word Processor Comparison: <http://youtu.be/w6Qcl-w7s5c>

I have known people to have multiple video cards and sound cards and they swap them out depending on what programs they are using because based on the programs they found different combinations to work. If you bought the sound card from one seller and the > motherboard from another which one is the faulty one? It's simple. Does the sound card work or not? If it works in my machine but not yours you just proved that the sound card does work. If it is a dud, then it is a dud. It shouldn't work anywhere. Take a Video card with Firmware written for the PC. Plug that into a Mac as is without flashing the firmware. What happens? It doesn't work. Plug that same card into a PC and it does work. See? You just proved the card works, but yet not in the Mac. And had you not known that a firmware is the cause of this, you'd be right where you are now, which is confused and clueless. The first step is to determine if the sound card works at all. If it does work, then it is likely your motherboard. And it might not even be broken at all. It might have built in sound that requires you to disable it in order to use this add-on card. But perhaps you're clueless and don't know this. So, from your super basic description, you sound like the clueless type. You've no idea what you're doing and cry foul when it doesn't work. You then blame the OEM who sold you an add on which are not qualified to deal with. That's not their fault, it's yours. >> For all I know, you have IRQ 5 being used on one and not the other. >> Could be that simple. > > Nope. I'm not looking to blame the motherboard or the sound card. As I said all along, you have to be able to test both. And even if you can't figure it out, you can just return it. Where I buy, if something doesn't work for me, I can just return it. How long does it take you to realize a sound card doesn't work for you? I'd know in about 45 minutes tops. I tend to stick with Creative as I have had no trouble with them over the years. -- Nom De Plume

If it is a headache for you then perhaps Apple's warranty is a value to you because you're not capable of supporting your own needs. Look, if you can't boil water then someone else making you a cup of coffee and charging you $5 for the service might seem like a value. But I can make a cup of coffee. Hell I make pretty mean Fettuccine Alfredo. Do I always want to cook. Nope. But most of the time I do because I can and because I enjoy it. It's not a waste of time if I an enjoy doing what I am doing. What is a waste of time is someone who can't, tries and fails and doesn't learn. I don't need NannyOS. I'm capable of running Linux very well, on a machine I built, which is not rocket science. Not for me anyway. >>> And, yes, I have seen situations like this. >> >> Yet, you don't know how to resolve it and you call yourself a computer >> guy... Seems to me you'd be wrong about that. Say he has a client who encounters that same problem. Is he going to cry on a forum asking for help, or is he going to show his client the value he is supposed to be providing them? And that's a very fair question. >>>> Then show that proof to the seller and if they refuse to take it back >>>> within the return policy guidelines, I'll then agree with you. >>> >>> Show the proof of what? It goes something like this. How many techs does it take to fix a flat tire? And it goes on about how 4 techs will remove all 4 tires and rotate them endlessly, never actually fixing the flat at all. First of all, he is a tech, so this is his value-add. If all he does is say, buy a Mac, and Apple for warranty support, then he's simply not needed, which would account for all the free time he spends here pissing and moaning about Linux. I too like to buy things that are pre-made, work well together, etc. I wouldn't want to build a main frame from scratch. I'll let IBM do that as that's what they are good at. However, if I claimed to be someone you can call when something goes wrong with that Main Frame, then you can bet I'd be skilled and diagnosing and solving problems. And those kinds of skills stem from people who are naturally you-it-yourselfers. Guys who like doing this and live it, eat it, breath it. That's who gets great at it. False dichotomy. One can be very capable of something but still prefer to have an easier solution. > Look, if you can't boil water then someone else making you a cup of > coffee and charging you $5 for the service might seem like a value. It often is not... but as you have shown, when you run into problems you just start returning parts hoping they will be accepted. And what do you end up with? Would be interesting to see what sorts of tasks you do and how well you do them? I challenged a number of people in comp.os.linux.advocacy to see how they do things on Linux compared to how I do them on the competition. For the most part they could not handle the tasks I did... and even on their OWN tasks, when I did them on my Mac they were so amazed at how well and quickly the tasks were done they accused me of doctoring the videos. It was really quite funny. Here are the tasks... would love to see how well you are able to complete them: * From a single online recipe (or art project, lesson plan, whatever) save it and email a PDF version where you add notes to it. Now I know this can be done on Linux; save, open, edit, email. Just curious to see how you people would generally do it and how streamlined the workflow would be. A couple ways I might: <https://youtu.be/NPM_WldEBs0>. * Make a video, as Owl and I have been, but with cursor replacement / resizing (post production), window highlighting, zooming, arbitrary area highlighting. For me these were done just to show something else: <https://youtu.be/aSNpnYpmKag>. I have many other options but picked these because they fit the real-world example I did shortly before coming up with the "challenge". * Getting a WayBackArchive page and getting images of all links, the HTML validation and CSS validation from W3.org, and a active link to the archive page, as I did here (does not have to look the exact same, of course): <http://tmp.gallopinginsanity.com/sandman/sandman-archive.pdf>. Would love to see how you would do those. My guess: we never will. >>>> And, yes, I have seen situations like this. >>> >>> Yet, you don't know how to resolve it and you call yourself a computer >>> guy... Keep in mind I have not put you down in any way for having a hobby of making your own machines. You like it and it is working for you. I completely back that. No problem here. But you, like many Linux users, seem troubled others have different preferences and make different choices than you do. It is odd. ... >> Or maybe, just maybe, he simply prefers not to have to do it at all. That seems rather stupid, since on the desktop we're likely both running intel processors, but have c compilers, both have a bash shell, etc. So what would be the point? How does this relate in any way to what I have posted thus far? In fact, one of the big reasons games have such a fast frame rate on Windows is because Windows allows the video to run in kernel space, which can cause the kernel to crash. Linux doesn't allow this, thus is a little slower, but much more reliable. I would imagine there are a number of things you can do more easily than I can because that's the value add that Apple is selling you. Like you have Spotlight. Ubuntu has a search which is quite good actually, but I've not tested them to see which is better, and honestly I think in the end they likely do different things and won't lend themselves to apples to apples comparisons. We could do a Mandelbrot on each machine, but then that's just a benchmark. Again, that's been done to death. How about this... How easily can tell me what shared objects an app uses or requires? I can do this in one command. Would you like my solution? What would be your solution? Or, without an internet connection, I have a package an I want to know what files it contains, what libraries it uses. Or, I have a command, but I don't know where it came from. What package owns this command, and how I can find out more about that package? Can you do any of those things? -- Nom De Plume

To see how we do the tasks, of course. And I showed how I would. The fact they have similar hardware makes it so we can, if anything, BETTER compare the environments. If you think you can do it much the same on Linux then show it. If you can then you will be educating me. I think that would be great and I would be quite appreciative. But I suspect you never will because for many things Linux is not a very good solution. For other things it is. If you are someone who develops programs and works mostly in the command line then Linux is a GREAT choice. ... > I would imagine there are a number of things you can do more easily than > I can because that's the value add that Apple is selling you. Aha. So it is not, as you said, a NannyOS, but instead an environment that allows you to get tasks done better. I agree. And I think we would also agree this does not mean it allows you to get ALL tasks done better or that it is the best choice for everyone. Even for those who might benefit from OS X it might not be worth getting the high end machines it comes on. I mention those things because I want to keep the theme strong: I am not putting you down for your choices nor saying you should use what I do. > Like you have Spotlight. That's why Linux is better suited for server and special use environments than home desktops in general. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. AKA, Libraries. Can you tell me which libraries any given app requires? Second question, without an internet connection, can you tell me what files your package contains, and what libraries it requires to function? Third question, I have a command on my system, any command it doesn't matter. Tell me, which package gave you the command and give me information about that package itself. How would you do any or all three of those tasks? -- Nom De Plume

In other words, you realize you are in over your head. Keep in mind the "challenges" you failed... and it not as if you were not interested in challenges because as you ran away from these you worked to change the topic by offering your own! * From a single online recipe (or art project, lesson plan, whatever) save it and email a PDF version where you add notes to it. Your challenges were pretty much: can you look at the OS X Activity Monitor. Maybe for some can I run a command line utility such as ldd. Um, yes, I can. But, as noted, your "tasks" are about tinkering with the tool... not actually getting any real work done. And that is a good summary of the benefits of OS X vs. Linux. -- * OS X / Linux: What is a file? <http://youtu.be/_dMbXGLW9PI> * Mint MATE Trash, Panel, Menu: <http://youtu.be/C0y74FIf7uE> * Mint KDE working with folders: <http://youtu.be/7C9nvniOoE0> * Mint KDE creating files: <http://youtu.be/N7-fZJaJUv8> * Mint KDE help: <http://youtu.be/3ikizUd3sa8> * Mint KDE general navigation: <http://youtu.be/t9y14yZtQuI> * Mint KDE bugs or Easter eggs? <http://youtu.be/CU-whJQvtfA> * Easy on OS X / Hard on Linux: <http://youtu.be/D3BPWANQoIk> * OS / Word Processor Comparison: <http://youtu.be/w6Qcl-w7s5c>

You ran. So can we assume you can do NONE of those. If so then we can move on to yours. Meanwhile, please show how you do your tasks, just as I show how I do mine. I have no hidden agenda.
