I know this will come as a shock, but all laptops come
equipped with hard drives made by Asians. So even if you buy 100%
American, when you open it up, you will see it is not.
As to the limp dick thing, I'm sure your wife has a share of
the blame. Don't get depressed, it will only make matters worse.
Appreciate the good word for Linux. If Linux can solve HDon
/limp-dick issues, maybe it should have a bigger following.

I spent my adolescence assuming that OS/2 was going to become a
phenomenon. Once Windows 95 came out though, OS/2 was completely
forgotten. Clearly, IBM was too incompetent to take the steam away from
Microsoft despite the fact that it was still the most important name in
computing at the time.
Now, the only thing standing in the way of Microsoft's complete
dominance of the x86 and x64 platforms is Linux.

I took a class in OS/2 presentation manager programming at a local
community college, right before Windows 3.0 was released. I believed
that IBM's API was superior in a lot of ways, and I liked the function
naming better (object/verb instead of verb/object - so 'WindowCreate()'
for OS/2, 'CreateWindow()' for MS Windows).

Simple history and trends. If after 20+ years of getting no traction on
the desktop, it isn't going to happen now. And that's because you have
two competing interests in the linux desktop arena.
Interest #1 is the overall community that loves the plethora of distros
and UIs. As a free and open OS with a strong hobbyist/developer
community behind that thought it is good. but...
Interest #2 is the vastly smaller part that would like to get some
commercial success with Linux desktop. For them the number of distros
and UIs make having a consistent marketing message nearly impossible to
do.
Doesn't help that when Canonical made a run at that with a mix of free
and commercial software the 'community' howled loudly. Couple that with
probably the poorest batch of support forums out there and almost no
actual formal support structure and you have the prescription for failure.
Note that I'm not at all saying that Linux on the desktop isn't
technically a good OS, just that from a marketing/sales point of view,
there is no way to make it a commercial success.

With some of the distros you can purchase support. There are forums for
support and then you can Google.

Yes, that is true. But paid support is not the norm with Linux desktop
and generally not available except for a very few exceptions. The forums
are a mess and unfortunately not well moderated. Too many really crappy
replies to help requests makes many just stay away after a very few
times. And of course the "doesn't happen to me, must be you" answers are
all too often given.
And Google support searches are worth exactly what you pay for them.

Given a roughly 1.5% desktop market share, none of them are exactly
successful from a commercial viewpoint. RedHat probably comes closest.

There is nothing wrong with saying "Canonical sucks and people should not use their product", just as there is nothing wrong with saying that "Donald Trump sucks and people should not vote for him". Saying such things does not suppress anyone's freedom to choose, or to vote.
