A version of <app> 'specifically modified' for each Linux distro?

Microsoft is doomed.

It's a problem, and it's not solved.

Not only is it 'specifically modified' - according to another post from
wRonG these apps also need to be 'specifically designed' for his distro.

"So you don't use the version of Firefox that is
specifically designed for your distribution ... because ...?"

Then "advocates" balk at the idea that <company> doesn't support Linux
because there's too many distros. What fragmentation... just "specifically
design and specifically modify" the application for each distro. Non-problem
solved!

(Fact is that wRonG is talking out his clueless ass. Our product is orders
of magnitude larger and more complicated than Firefox and we don't do
anything special for any distro. We only officially support Redhat and SuSE
since that's what every one of our customers uses. They don't use any distro
that doesn't have professional support backing the product. A major bank or
telecom isn't going to post to some distro-forum and hope they get a
solution to their problem.)

Yep. Since I have paid support for RedHat, they finally acknowledged that
there is a problem with FireFox. When it'll get fixed is another issue.

Stupid. I got my FireFox from RedHat to run on RedHat linux.
And it does occasionally crash.
I even filed a bug report to RedHat.

I've never had FireFox crash on me on Win7. On RedHat it has crashed and I
filed a bug report thru RedHat.

The URL says firefox.
The name of the program is Firefox.
On Linux the program file is called firefox
On Windows the program file is called firefox.exe
On OS X the program file is called Firefox.app

It is only a problem for computers which insist on case sensitivity, as YOU
provided a great example for.

For HUMANS it is not an issue at all (except when computers fail to account
for how humans think).

You cannot help but self-nuke on this topic over and over. Love it!

Tell it to Apple, who are running www.apple.com on top of a case-sensitive
file system. Tell it to Microsoft, whose NTFS file system is fully case-
sensitive.

So we can add self-nuking to the long list of things you are clueless about.

As I said, I think Apple is wrong here. We already discussed this. Comes
down to you rehashing stuff instead of just admitting you screwed up again.
:)

> Tell it to Microsoft, whose NTFS file system is fully case-

It is... under Linux. Not Windows. MS is smart enough to put in the added
work to make sure things are easier for users.

Linux screws things up for the primary users of NTFS systems by not
following the Windows standards, even as an easy to use option:

<http://tmp.gallopinginsanity.com/NTFS_WIN_LINUX.mov>

It is likely why Apple uses NTFS as read only. The case issues lead to
problems. But with add-ons OS X works much like Linux... it gets things
wrong for Windows users.

No. NTFS is fully case-sensitive period. It is the way in which
some Windows subsystems choose to interface with it that makes it
appear to be merely case-preserving. As you can see in one of
my other posts, installing the services for unix you can open
a unix shell under Win 2008 server and have full case-sensitive
behavior. This *is* running under Windows when it does that.
It requires flipping a registry bit to enable default case-senistive
behavior however. But this makes no change whatsoever to the
NTFS volume, which is fully case sensitive from the start.

> Linux screws things up for the primary users of NTFS systems by not
> following the Windows standards, even as an easy to use option:

Linux is following the NTFS standard. And since Linux is not
Windows, it does not have to play by Windows rules when it interfaces
with NTFS.

Put it on youtube. I don't visit hostile sites.

It is Windows users that are not taking full advantage of the capabilies
of NTFS.

Sure. But what does that have to do with this thread?

And yet Windows treats it as case preserving but not case sensitive. MS goes
out of their way to make things better for users.

Linux does not have this, even as an option.

That is like saying you will go by an official French book when you visit
Paris and insist the people in Paris are wrong when they use their own
vernacular.

You can fear it as much as you want. Use HideMyAss or whatever if you want.
I do not care.

But it proves my point very well.

It is Windows that goes out of its way to serve users better.

Not even an option on Linux.

LOL! You will not even admit to it.

That might be the funniest part of all. :)

No, it's like going to paris and insisting that they use verbs instead
of some mishmash of spoken language and charades.
