Yeah, but it's kind of cruel to allow the poor PC to be infected with
Windows Virus, then take it out on the PC when all that was really needed
was installing Linux over the top of that vile WinCrap.

There are many viruses for Windows... love how you refer to it as just one.

And, yes, I get how you were *trying* to be funny and call Windows itself a
virus. Ha ha.

Really... you need new material. Maybe from your imaginary friends. :)

How would the poor bastard even know about Linux? It isn't smeared in his
face hourly on Teevee or the Internet. It isn't foisted upon every Peecee
he sees in Walmart or Office Depot.

Currently, you actually have to get up off your ass to find and install
Linux.

It's an amazingly fscked-up situation, that one brand so dominates the
desktop that when "bad news", such as virus outbreaks and malware, are
reported in the media, they don't even bother to mention that it's a
Windows issue. Everyone just assumes.

Could anyone imagine any other market so devoid of choice?

"In the news today, cars are being recalled. If you have a car, bring
it to the dealer and have it fixed."

But there's nothing wrong with the desktop PC market. "Luminaries",
such as Kreep and Slime, have said so. No one is *forced* to buy
Windows, you see, so there is nothing for anyone to complain about.

Sheesh.

What part of the market is or was ever not fair or free, ignoramus?

Everyone has always been free to buy, sell, develop or install any
computer operating system.

It's not Microsoft's fault the world chose Windows.

Your employer demands Windows: "I buy a lot of Windows PC's to use as
test stations, and I've been buying refurbished XP machines and have no
plans to change."

So does your household, and probably you, too.

You whiny idiot.

The other day someone posted a link to a 13" Dell laptop with a high-res
display that runs Linux.

People are free to buy it. But don't blame Dell for not having a Linux
option across their entire desktop/consumer line if the demand simply isn't
there.

Chris, you make a good point, and you've always been a strong advocate
of fair markets and capitalism. I haven't seen you ever be inconsistent
with that message, and I'm glad you have a sense of what capitalism is
supposed to mean.

Having said that -- and devil's advocate here -- why don't you post from
a Linux system?

If you did, I think the windrones' heads would explode!

it would mean to break up Ma Bell, too...

I post from my office PC at work, which runs Windows. Windows is
unavoidable in my job. It's all over the place.

I have nothing against proprietary software, as long as people have
real choice. That is, as long as there is something resembling a
level playing field in the market, and people are reasonably free to
switch vendors without unreasonable costs or difficulties.

I do have something against Micro$oft's "business tactics", which have
succeeded in denying real choice to consumers in the desktop OS
market. No, I'm not going to quit my job in protest, and no, that
does not make me a "hypocrite".

Same here. But almost all of our developers use Linux as their main system,
and run Windows only in virtual machines.

People still tend to fixate needlessly on brand names.

I was talking to some Winboi about mounting other kinds of file systems, and
he asked me what application do I use to mount them.

"Uh, mount. The command-line command."

You too. Get back to work. You're not getting paid to hand out in cola
all day. Does Jayne know what you're up to when you're supposed to be
bringing in the bacon?

this anomaly by doing the same thing that the unemployed ones sitting in
their underwear within their mom's basements do: nothing.

In 2004 and 2007, the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI)
survey found that Comcast had the worst customer satisfaction rating

As its customer satisfaction eroded by 7% over the past year,

The ACSI analysis also addresses this contradiction, stating that

" Such pricing power usually comes with some level of

have little competition at the local level.

This also means that a cable company can do well financially

Comcast employs the spouses, sons and daughters of mayors,
councilmen, commissioners, and other officials to assure
its continued preferred market allocations. >>
