To better qualify what I wrote, a large part of the browser being slower is probably because websites today are much bigger, fatter and have way more trash/ads/tracking than they did a decade ago. I bet that if I used a (slightly) slower Firefox on (much faster) modern hardware and visited the same sites that existed a decade ago it would be much faster. I need to setup my proxy server with that ad-filtering software that Melzzzz mentioned on Friday and see what the browsing experience is like then. I have a fast computer. When I go to a site like CNN.com or ABCNews.com the site is basically unusable. There are so many ads, so many videos that start playing and so much shit on those sites that even my fast computer will grind to a halt as all of that shit loads.

Well, since I posted that comment, I uninstalled Firefox and went back to using Opera. In general, it feels faster than Firefox and since it is proprietary code AND uses the same engine as Chrome, I can't help but believe that the experience will be a lot better. However, with either browser, I always make sure to install both HTTPS Everywhere (to make the connection as secure as possible) and Ghostery. Ghostery blocks all tracking cookies which are usually the reason why the browsing experience is slow. After all, these trackers communicate with a server other than the one you visited and therefore delay your requested content from appearing. Considering that many popular sites sometimes have up to 70 or even 100 of these tracking cookies per page, it's a good idea to block them especially for privacy reasons. Try the extension out on your own and tell me if the browsing experience improves for you. It always does for me. -- Slimer OpenMedia, GreenPeace Supporter & SPCA Paw Partner Encrypt.

It always does for me. I installed Ghostery (for Opera on Windows) and it found 67 trackers on www.cnn.com. Blocked every one of them, and the page load speed is 2x as fast! Nice. Thanks for the recommendation. I'll keep using it and see if any problems crop up.

For certain pages, especially if they have embedded video, you might have to temporarily disable Ghostery. Just turn it back on when you're done viewing the content and it'll re-block the crap that the site put onto your browser. I would recommend you install CCleaner Pro as well so that it takes care of constantly cleaning your browser when you exit, but it's an unnecessary step. -- Slimer OpenMedia, GreenPeace Supporter & SPCA Paw Partner Encrypt.

My Firefox on Linux Mint 17.1 works great. I just use the version
provided by Linux Mint.

The damned software should work on any linux system unless somebody has been fucking around where they shouldn't have.

Who wouldn't prefer the package manager? -- it's just one of the ways
Linux is superior to WinCrap.

The problem with the package manager is that the versions of its software are often MUCH older than what is available in the wild. For instance, you'll hear that LibreOffice 4.5 is available with amazing new features but your repository only called 4.1, with no possibility of upgrading until the distribution's head decides to allow it. To you, that's superior, to me is another waiting period that I wish I could avoid but can't due to Linux's complete inferiority. -- Slimer OpenMedia, GreenPeace Supporter & SPCA Paw Partner Encrypt.
