My wife has an iMac that is 7 or 8 years old. It still runs the newest OS
and the newest programs - though of course slower than my newer iMac.

So while I agree they drop the old too quickly it is not like my wife is on
the bleeding edge here. Even then, though, they have re-done iWork and other
programs and toss the old... and then leave programs have complete. It is
annoying.

The fact they tend to be hacked quickly in the contests looking for such is
a concern, but I have never had an issue or known anyone who has on a Mac.
The only real users who have to be concerned deeply about security are those
who use Windows and Android.

And I would move to Windows before ANY Linux distro. :)

I actually thought Windows 7 was a pretty good OS, even if I did not like
the window borders and much of the rest of the look.

OS X has always been this way. I have re-installed my OS a couple of times
through the years... but never had to worry about re-installing all my apps
and my data. Hmmm, I did have to re-install some Adobe programs and a couple
of drivers... but that was it. And I have over 500 programs in my
Applications folder.

Wow. Just checked that. Need to clean some out I am guessing. :)

Windows XP was pretty good for its time and I liked Windows 7. Even 8 is
pretty good but I never got used to the new UI. Seems they are backing off
of it for Windows 10 and giving it away. Nothing wrong with them doing so -
Linux and OS X are also free these days.

Until the last two versions of OS X came out (I believe it was the last
two but it might just have been the last one), older iMacs like hers
were essentially locked out of operating system upgrades. The fact that
Apple allowed her to have the latest version is an anomaly, not the norm.

I can't argue with you there. Mac users live in their own world where
concerns such as security completely slip their minds. They are
essentially the embodiment of "ignorance is bliss." There are
simultaneously so many things and nothing wrong with that.

Windows is mostly utilitarian. Microsoft doesn't seem overly concerned
with providing anything other than a very polished, professional look
for its users. Only idiots like the Linux losers focus on elegant little
toys to spruce up the desktop at the expense of its stability. 3D cube

Linux is free because it has to be. Nobody in their right mind would pay

Macs usually support the current OS for about 7 years or so. It was shorter
for some as they moved to Intel, but overall this is what I have found.

It is good to be aware of security concerns on ANY OS, but only with the two
I mention above is there a big concern for most users. I have literally
NEVER seen an OS X machine that is infected with malware ... and I have run
ClamX and the like to check.

[I first said a Mac, but that is not true - there were some malware that
infected OS 6... and then was blocked in OS 7 I think.]

When it serves a purpose I have nothing against a cube transition, but when
done just to show off, as is mostly the case on Linux, it is absurd.

I did not like the borders on Windows 7 with their transparency and then the
outer glow on text so you could read it. Just nasty. Not that one could not
get used to it. And Yosemite is just as bad (or at least close) with its
transparency. I have it turned off.

Whatever his old accomplishments with GNOME, de Icaza lost his credibility
with many in the OSS community. I wouldn't trust him anymore.

That's because he found out about the cult-herd mentality.
He also found out, along with Linus, how many of you idiots are mentally

I don't hate Icaza, I just ignore his attempt to push Linux towards .NET.
I think he got caught up in his own self-importance. That's what's good
about Linux. You've got choice. If you choose not to go Icaza's direction
(which is how most Linux users chose) than you're not forced to use
something you don't like. With Windows 8 (for example) it was "take or
leave it." What Microsoft didn't expect is that so many would "leave it'
-- or at least not update to it. What's pathetic is how WinDrones made
believe everything was hunky dory with Windows 8 -- until 10 was
announced. Much like they did with Vista -- until Windows 7 was announced.

Actually, you'll notice that the complaints about Vista and 8 were
enormous and from the most dedicated of "WinDrones" as well. Most of
these people threatened to leave the ecosystem for Apple or Linux and
articles in magazines such as Maximum PC and PC Gamer trumpeted these
facts. The MINORITY of people defended Vista and 8 and I am one of these
people. The reason we did is because unlike the majority of users, who
simply looked at Vista and 8 and decided they wanted nothing to do with
it, we actually _used_ these operating systems and noticed that they
were significant improvements over the previous generation.

You can stop with your lying now.

.NET Core

.NET Core is a free and open-source partial implementation of the .NET
Framework. It consists of CoreCLR and CoreFX, which are partial forks of CLR
and BCL respectively. NET Core comes with an improved JIT compiler, called
RyuJIT.

Portability

While Microsoft has never implemented the full framework on any system
except Microsoft Windows, it has engineered the framework to be
platform-agnostic,[15] and cross-platform implementations are available for
other operating systems (see Silverlight and § Alternative implementations).
Microsoft submitted the specifications for CLI (which includes the core
class libraries, CTS, and CIL), C#, and C++/CLI to both ECMA and ISO, making
them available as official standards. This makes it possible for third
parties to create compatible implementations of the framework and its
languages on other platforms.

I don't consider making a new programming framework available to whoever
wants to use it or chooses for their application as hijacking anything.

If someone doesn't want to use it - don't use it. If someone wants to use it
then it's their choice. Nobody is being forced to use or support anything
that they don't want.
