The ONLY salient sentence there is: "Other contributors may
or may not be compensated for their contributions."

The lage majority of the kernel, and the vast majority of the thousands
of packages included with a Linux distro, were created by unpaid hobbyists.

How about the salient part “…….Microsoft pay their employees to
contribute to Linux development”

You would not understand the satisfaction that comes from giving to
greater cause. For many monetary compensation is not the only driving force.

Nor do the majority of FOSS "volunteers", who constantly solicit for
donations (mostly money and hardware/equipment) for their 'greater
cause' projects.

Here's a classic bit of FOSS "volunteerism":

Sorry for the red font and large font size, but, I wish to do none of
this and hope you will help me to keep going.

This is my urgent plea to you.

Please make a donation today.

Thank You.

shut down a while ago.

Most FOSS developers do it because they like to code.

"Abstract:
In this paper we report on the results of a study of the effort and
motivations of individuals to contributing to the creation of Free/Open
Source software. We used a Web -based survey, administered to 684
software developers in 287 F/OSS projects, to learn what lies behind the
effort put into such projects. Academic theorizing on individual
motivations for participating in F/OSS projects has posited that
external motivational factors in the form of extrinsic benefits
(e.g.; better jobs, career advancement) are the main drivers of effort.
We find in contrast, that enjoyment-based intrinsic motivation, namely
how creative a person feels when working on the project, is the
strongest and most pervasive driver. We also find that user need,
intellectual stimulation derived from writing code, and improving
programming skills are top motivators for project participation. A
majority of our respondents are skilled and experienced professionals
working in IT-related jobs, with approximately 40 percent being paid to
participate in the F/OSS project."

LibreOffice is going from bad to the worst, much like Gnome.... I liked the feature rich v.4 but v.5 is a failure. Why don't yo try the wps-office, it even comes with the Win10 fonts ;-)

That's insanely hot. The CPU should reduce its workload and even shut
down if it senses it might wreck itself like that. I'm almost interested
in testing this and frying a CPU just to see what happens.

My CPU goes normally 80oC when e.g. compiling new Kernel using all 8 cores, that's normal temperature it's built to withstand. The GPU is even hotter, e.g. Nvidia reaching 90oC at peak times and still fine. On the other hand yo HDD may go nuts if it keeps running at >=50oC for extended time.

So, DumbFor$ure shows just *four* examples from Ubuntu forums, & asks
"can open source and LO hobby developers be any more ridiculous?" The
one that's being ridiculous is that dimwit! He seems to "think" (I use
the term loosely) that just because it happens with one distro, it must
happen in all distros!

I have both DuFuS and Melzzz killfiled. I wouldn't know what BS they were
spewing if not these quotes.

Then you spend the next 10 years reading and analyzing everything I
write. And continuing to reply to me - even though I'm supposedly plonked.

Good one, turd!

There you go again, pulling up an obscure quote of mine that you claimed
you never read.

You're such a dumb, lying piece of crap.
