Yep. WinDrones here have bragged about "dumpster diving" into "sharing" (stealing) sites to get their expensive applications and even their own OS. Get your own house in order, WinDrones. As for the "cheapskates" accusation ... it just proves that Linux is more efficient and doesn't need expensive, high-end hardware to run. Hardly a condemnation. Personally I don't think "expensive" and "high quality" hardware are not always synonymous terms. My Optiplex 755 is high quality -- it just happens to be older. So what? It works very well with Linux Mint 17.1. -- WinDrones and iCultists are obsessed with Linux. Get a life.

Well, while it might not necessarily be that (i.e., different personal priorities), the problem is that the way that the discussions never get beyond anything but prices (and constantly rail against the idea of even spending $20 for a software app), it does makes it a bit hard to conclude otherwise. Similarly, when a poster proudly mentions getting a new car, which these days is just a few clicks away from finding its MSRP, which can then just as easily get cross-referenced against references on the domestic average new car price, which was $32,086 at the end of 2013: <http://www.interest.com/car-buying/news/build-financial-security-affordable-car-truck/> From there, it isn't rocket science to glean some insights of how well a guy is really doing when he's rocking a ride that's half the National average when he's 30 years since he left his schooling behind. Or of course, maybe it is just due to alimony payments from two divorces...but either way, it does smack of faux excuse making. -hh

I believe that good software should result in the programmers being compensated fairly. For instance, I saw MediaMonkey as an excellent program so even though its advanced features were not all that necessary to me (I could just as easily have used Exact Audio Copy to rip CDs securely), I figured I'd pay them for the fact that their tag editor for one was second-to-none. It's the same with software like mIRC which I used almost exclusively in high school and even MakeMKV. They worked hard to bring us software which works well and allows us to do something magnificent so who are we to demand that they give it out for free. I truly feel sorry for the programmers who work hard to produce software for Linsux. On the other hand, their hard work still results in mediocre software so perhaps the Linsux losers know that even if they charged, nobody would be dumb enough to pay. -- Slimer OpenMedia, GreenPeace Supporter & SPCA Paw Partner Encrypt.

Living like there's no tomorrow is a good way to ensure that there won't be.

On the other hand, it is rather likely that expensive things beyond
pure hardware are actually acquired illegally. That's the thing about
computers. It's really easy to "steal" the software. So you don't
necessarily need to even worry about the cost of legitimately acquiring
something. You can just go on a downloading frenzy.
Why seek out a better alternative when the herd option is "free"?

Spending a small sum of money on things you enjoy isn't exactly living like there's no tomorrow. Take his ancient CRT for example. He could have upgraded to a flat LCD a decade ago and the new monitor would have paid for itself by now in power savings. Being cheap and "saving money" can actually cost money if you sit down and actually bother to do the math. The first thing I did when we moved to our new place was to replace the ancient thermostats with a couple of Nest thermostats. The Nest isn't exactly cheap ($250/each) but I'm able to think beyond "just today" and simple math tells me that the Nest will pay for itself with energy savings in less than 2 years. Or I could be the guy who "saves money" by keeping the ancient thermostat since it still works. -- "about 70% of the iPads quit working on 3G when upgraded to iOS 7." I thought about the Nest when it came out, but we already had a conventional timer-based setback thermostat, so the incremental improvement that the Nest represented didn't make it a favorable financial decision.
