#451234 — Observations

After working with vim and sc under linux on the android, I have noticed
that, as counterintuitive as it might seem, editing and spreadsheet
tasks are actually much *easier* this way than they are with the usual
touch-screen interface to typical android apps of those types. All that
frustrating touch and hold (and usually try again several times), drag,
menu choice, etc., vs simple, precise keyboard navigation and short,
powerful commands for cutting, pasting, etc. Much more efficient this
way. I had tried a while back to use Excel on my phone. After about
10 minutes, I wanted to throw the phone against a wall. By contrast,
SC, with its vi-like navigation, is a pleasure to use on the phone.

Vim and SC are the obvious choices for effiency when you have a physical
keyboard, but it's not so obvious that they are also the most efficient
on a touch screen with a software keyboard.

Would be interesting to see a video of you, say, making a 10x10
multiplication table.

Thanks!

Just finished mine and it is uploading... I compare Numbers on iOS and
macOS.

In the video I speculate you might be able to do so better... I think
you did, BUT in my video (which you clearly did not see before you made
yours) I added details to what would make such a table fit what I was
thinking. CLEARLY you did not see this before your video, though I did
not even know you were working on it (you had said I was kill filtered).

Anyway, here is my video... I *completely* screw up near the end as I
try to figure out how to resize my columns to fit the data (it really is
not that hard, but I had never used iOS Numbers other than to
occasionally view and do VERY minor edits to data before this).

     <https://youtu.be/SSGza1eIO28>

It is interesting to me how you work to be very efficient, and I commend
that, and I (while still seeking to be efficient) seek to make things
more visually attractive. Many years ago when I was in a Pascal class
and we had the assignment to make a multiplication table I made one that
looked closer to yours -- so not putting you or yours down in any way.

Also: not that either of us were racing, but speed wise:

1) Numbers on macOS: About 1:50 with saving and making look "fancy"
(though I do forget to resize the first column and do that later).

2) vi and sc on Android: About 2:30, nothing fancy (but fit originally
stated criteria just fine).

3) Numbers on iOS: About 2:50 for "just" the table, but then about
another 3:38 of my futzing around formatting, much of that time just me
failing to find the "auto fit" option from my own ignorance. I am
surprised I was about the same speed as you for the basic table in
iOS... really figured you would kick my butt there. And keep in mind
this was the first time I had really used Numbers on iOS. Also will add
that there are a LOT of quirks to using Numbers on iOS on a tiny screen.
I cannot imagine doing any real work there... even if I can say THIS
task is about as quick as yours, overall this would just SUCK for
anything more complex.

Ah... but I have a bluetooth keyboard :)

https://pewtube.com/user/owl/tNb0H66?autoplay=off

So now it's android + vim + sc at about 1:30 (with added
label and rows and columns for 1xN and Nx1).

I'll have to start keeping the bluetooth keyboard and mouse in the car.

(I posted this reply earlier, but it's not showing, so it may duplicate).

:)

I was just getting ready to redo mine to see, without going crazy, how
fast I can go. I see you have typos so it is not like you rushed like
crazy and took 10 takes... maybe I will do the same tomorrow. I am busy
tonight.

I do not think I can add a BlueTooth keyboard to my pod... but the
bigger issue is trying to select things without whooshing into
nothingness. :)

OK, took the time tonight... one and done. No Bluetooth keyboard (but I
was wrong to say they do not support them... they do:

Without my "extra" formatting: 1:00
Naming, resizing, shading every other row: 0:37
Total would be: 1:37 (I talk a bit between them)

Not bad... and faster and easier than I expected... and that was with
continuing to make a couple of mistakes.

<https://youtu.be/ymUT2wB4FHQ>

Again, though, while we may be working on the same task the tools we are
using are so different that there really is no reasonable comparison.
Both are spreadsheets (well, vi is not but you are creating data for sc)
but of completely different types and with very different benefits and
weaknesses.

Fun to see the comparison though.

This is similar:

https://imgur.com/a/abEsU8Y

----- blah.sc -----
set color
format a:k 4 0 0
leftstring e0="Multiplication Table"
fill b1:k1 1 1
fill a2:a11 1 1
let b2=b$1*$a2
copy c2:k2 b2:b2
copy b3:b11 b2:k2
color a0:k11 4
merge "|./alt b 2 k 11"
-------------------

Creation speed would be however fast I could type that. The "alt"
script that is called with "merge" sets alternating line colors for a
range, similar to your light and dark shading. It is available to any
sc spreadsheet, so I don't count the code for "alt" as code that needs
to be typed for this particular sheet.

I would argue not quite as pretty, but really that is largely a matter
of color choice and the like... if you wanted you could use any colors
you wanted. Even fonts...

Is "alt" something you wrote?

As far as speed, even though I could claim a "win" based on times alone
(from the videos), as I said the tools and techniques we are using as so
different that such a comparison is really pretty silly. I am NOT in any
way trying to suggest that overall Numbers on iOS is a fast and
efficient tool, esp. on a 4 inch screen! It is clearly a graphical tool
and there are some pretty obvious limitations to that (like how when I
select things I end up losing the table outside the screen area).

I will say once I played with Numbers a bit on my iPod I found I could
do this a LOT faster than I thought I would be able to. Still some
quirks about selecting ranges which I do not get (could even be fat
fingering from the small screen with tiny targets).

Yes. This is a modified version that allows you to specify
the alternating colors:

#!/bin/bash
for i in $(seq ${2} ${4}); do
   if [ $((i%2)) -eq 0 ];then
    echo "color ${1}${i}:${3}${i} ${5}"
   else
    echo "color ${1}${i}:${3}${i} ${6}"
   fi
done

So in this sheet it would be called like this:

merge "|./alt2 b 2 k 11 7 5"

It could also be called manually from within any sheet, or
tied to a hotkey toggle. Such a script could have added
parsing complexity that allowed calling it a simpler fashion,
such as:

./alt b2 k11 7 5
or
./alt b2:k11 red:black black:green

Makes sense. One of the big benefits of what you are doing is the tie to
a programming language. I *can* use AppleScript (and to some extent
JavaScript) with Numbers but it is, well, pretty crappy. :)

No, you can't do anything in JS, it's *way* too difficult!

One of the "big benefits" of what he's doing is he's not locked
into what you're locked into. Using Python, JS or whatever... he
can expand the usefulness in a way you can't with just AS. Apple's
answer to this was to open things up with JS.

He or I can use other tools if we want. Neither of us is locked in.

For their scripting, yes, though unless things have changed there are
still things AppleScript can do that JavaScript cannot.

That depends on the task. For creating multiplication tables AS is fine,
for doing what I was talking about earlier (and below), not so much.

Earlier, I was talking about using GoogleSheets as a means of
performing CRUD operations without a database so a client who
only knew how to update a GoogleSheet could use it for data on
their website. I previously showed how you can write to a sheet
(and it was a lot faster than I though it would be); this one reads
and filters out records that are not females who are 25 and older
with certain education levels.

<https://streamable.com/tj6sl>

Forget the filtering, how would you grab any kind of GoogleSheet
data with AS? I'm sure it can be done... but how would you do it in
a way that was conducive to putting it into a table on a client's site?

Where did you learn to program?

Generally, I wouldn't call something like vallor's comments a delusion right up until you disprove it and he responds with the nothing but repetition because even he knows the details are wrong.

The guy is as loved as pork pie in a mosque -- and with good cause. vallor's behavior is totally false. There can be zero question that as soon as any recent 'plonkee' does one thing to frighten the feeble milksop's feelings that they will be reblocked.

What I am noting is I am not even "locked in" to Numbers. I also use
Excel and could use sc if I wanted. Years ago I *did* use sc (or
something like it... I think called vc or something like that) on UNIX
and also used the spreadsheet on AppleWorks. Now I use mostly Numbers
and sometimes Excel.

I'm talking about 'using' spreadsheets with external programmatic
influences, the context that you brought up when you wrote "the tie
to a programming language" (this is the context that' I've addressed
for the past couple of posts). Unless you've learned languages that
enable you to do that, you won't be able to do it so 'locked out' is
probably a better term. Why is AppleScript "pretty crappy" for
working with Numbers?

I don't, either... but it'd be interesting to see someone who knows
AppleScript well interact with it. Have you ever done any scripting
in AS that incorporates any of the Google APIs?

It is slow and clunky, at best. Does not help that the person scripting
it (me) is pretty clueless about it... but even when I have read about
others who know it much better that is the general consensus.

Nope. If Sandman was around he would be able to speak of that MUCH
better than I can -- don't know if he has done that specifically, but he
knows AppleScript FAR better than I do, and knows programming in
general... was going to say far better than I do, but that would imply I
am a programmer at all. :)
