SubjectPing sbd: another programming challenge for your developmentally challenged children
Message-ID<nt5rdf$35m$2@dont-email.me>
And it's another 12-line python program! How about that?!

Same as before, the challenge is to replicate the functionality in
another programming language.

Even though it's a tiny bit of code, I know all 3 of y'all will whine a
LOT, so this time I'll give you more hints.

--------------------------------------------------------
def splitByLength(t,n,m):
	w=str(t).split()
	s,q=0,''
	if w[0][0]=='>':
		q=w[0]+' '
		w.pop(0)
	for e in range(1,len(w)-1):
		if w[e][-1:]=='.':w[e]+=' '
		if len(q)+len(' '.join(w[s:e+1]))>=m:
			 print n,q+' '.join(w[s:e])
			 n+=1; s=e
	print n,q+' '.join(w[s:len(w)])
--------------------------------------------------------

t = input text
n = starting number
m = max length of lines
w = list object
s = integer to keep track of position
q = quoter character >
e = integer to keep track of position

Example input:

txt = "> Intel doesn't have to write a kernel from scratch. Nor does
Android. They can use Linux. And if they need to make modifications for
their own benefit, that's fine, just share that back. They benefited by
not having to develop from scratch. But they need to give something back
in return. Like the work they added. Both parties are give and take
something from each other. I'll take that over the BSD license any day
of the week."

Output of splitByLength(txt,1,60):

1 > Intel doesn't have to write a kernel from scratch. Nor
2 > does Android. They can use Linux. And if they need to
3 > make modifications for their own benefit, that's fine,
4 > just share that back. They benefited by not having to
5 > develop from scratch. But they need to give something
6 > back in return. Like the work they added. Both parties
7 > are give and take something from each other. I'll take
8 > that over the BSD license any day of the week.

Output of splitByLength(txt,100,40):

100 > Intel doesn't have to write a kernel
101 > from scratch. Nor does Android.
102 > They can use Linux. And if they need
103 > to make modifications for their own

105 > back. They benefited by not having

Let us recount the MANY idiocies within this pure shit code.

In the first place, the dumb-fuck shill is quite impressed
by his 12 lines of code, as if the paucity of lines implies
an extreme cleverness and efficiency.

The dumb doesn't realize that there is a SHIT LOAD of work
going on behind the scenes. A humongous SHIT LOAD.

Furthermore, the dumb fuck is actually manipulating strings,
which always is a computationally very expensive undertaking.

The whole thing SHOULD be written in C using pointers.
In that way there would be NO string manipulation whatsoever
and only a few lines would really, truly be necessary.

I will not waste my time writing actual code but the outline
is simple:

For each iteration, define pointers for the start and end of
a string section. A few tests (integer comparisons) to determine
how the string section would be terminated are then added.
Then the string section is output. When the next iteration
involves a section that extends beyond the original string
terminus, then output the remainder and exit.

It's very simple. Just pointers and a few integer comparisons
in a loop.

Compare that to the dumb fuck's humongous string manipulation
operations which are disguised as "12-line program."

The dumb fuck demonstrates his incompetence yet again.

Is it any wonder that he is a Microshit supporter?

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

You sat there in your EZ-Boy recliner eating popcorn and let fmt do all
the work. And then you couldn't even be bothered to increment a line
number counter!?

What are you talking about? My awesome one-liner does exactly what your
bloated python does. The line number counter increments by one. It
can have a custom increment with -i. RTFM.

DFS FTL

Here's a wrapper for the lazy:

fmt by itself does most of it.

Calling fmt is a huge CHEAT!

You did no looping, counting, incrementing, or comparisons. Write a
real program, why don'tcha?

Also, I notice your fmt output doesn't retain the 2 spaces after a
period.  That seems strange.

My code forces 2 spaces after a period, even if there was originally
only one.

So? That's what it's there for. Why reinvent the wheel. You realize
that shell scripts are all composed of commands, right? Anything
available in the shell becomes just another function I get to use.
You know, like the various python libraries...

fmt has a -u option that is supposed to handle that, but it does
not seem to work. You may have uncovered a bug.

       -u, --uniform-spacing
              one space between words, two after sentences

I can't imagine I'm the first to spot that, if it is a bug.

http://lingrok.org/xref/coreutils/src/fmt.c

Lines 700-701.  Looks right.

I didn't mean it as a brag, just a note that my program also changed the

"owl" is one of these guys who will have a friendly chit-chat with
someone, no matter how vile and shitty they are. "Snit", "DFS", you
name it. I don't get it, either.

Amazing. They all eventually slowly draw off the cloak and
asymptote to troll status.

It is very strange that you think that anyone would be fooled by your
lies, "Jim".

I plonked the idiot on day one, for being a "Snit" promoter.

I think you know the reason, "owl". I believe that being a total shit
should be discouraged, and that ignoring them is that only way to do
that.

I realize that some trolling, and some troll feeding, is necessary,
but some of these shitbags have went *way* "over the line".
