Mint 17.1 'Rebecca' Cinnamon 64-bit. Log File Viewer (found in Administration) Every time you go to open a log file, it starts back at /home/<user>/. And you can't choose multiple logs to open all at once. You want to open 10 log files? Get ready to navigate the filesystem 10x. Linux won

I'm running Mint 17, which has no "log file viewer" under "System Administration" in Synaptic. I also don't have an "Administration" submenu in my xfce menu. I'm using System Upgrade to upgrade to Mint 17.1 now, then I'll see if said submenu appears. Of course, this could be something Cinnamon-specific, in which case I will need to install Cinnamon to verify what you are seeing. -- -v Volcanoes have a grandeur that is grim And earthquakes only terrify the dolts, And to him who's scientific There is nothing that's terrific In the pattern of a flight of thunderbolts! -- W. Solution: Create a bookmark for /var/log. Now it will be easy to get to the directory, _and_ it will remember to use the directory after using the bookmark. It's a flaw with how gnome handles its last-directory-open logic (or at least, in that application), but I'm not inclined to report it as a bug with such a simply workaround. -- -v This sentence does in fact not have the property it claims not to have.

Does yours start first and every time at /var/log? If you can, copy a log file to another folder, then use the Viewer to open it from there, then see if the Viewer starts back at /var/log after that (which is where it should start). Mine started at, and always defaults back to, /home/dfs. It's a hassle. At least the logs stay in the list once you open them.

When I click and drag, the log square turns into a little ABC document pic that moves with the mouse, but it doesn't stay in the 'bookmark' list when I try to drop it. The little ABC document image fades away as it moves back to the log square and nothing changes in the 'bookmarks'.

That's what it looks like in Mate also. Except the file is named "mate- system-log" on the Mate system. -- To WinDrones and iCultists obsessed with Linux. Get a life.

You can open multiple logs in one instance, and they all stay open while the app is open, and they remain "in" the viewer after that. But you have to choose them one at a time, and mine defaulted back to /home/<user> each time. phail! vallor showed a way you can supposedly 'bookmark' so it doesn't navigate back to /home/<user> each time, but his tip didn't work on my system.

Then I guess I don't understand what you meant by, "can't choose multiple logs to open all at once." Granted, I don't see a way to do that here without starting new instances of the app, but doing so allows for opening multiple logs simultaneously in separate windows. > But you have to choose them one at a time, and mine defaulted > back to /home/<user> each time. Yeah, that's stupid. I've seen apps that do something like that. Can't remember which offhand, but it's annoying. They must have changed things in the log viewer. Mine opens to /var/log every time. > phail! > vallor showed a way you can supposedly 'bookmark' so it doesn't navigate > back to /home/<user> each time, but his tip didn't work on my system.

I can highlight 3 Excel spreadsheets and hit Enter and all of them load into Excel. That's the kind of behavior I'm talking about. You /can/ open the logs one at a time in Log Viewer, and they all stay open. /end of this whine >> But you have to choose them one at a time, and mine defaulted >> back to /home/<user> each time. > > Yeah, that's stupid.
