That's actually one of the questions I ask during the interview, Would
I be allowed to run a UNIX clone, such as Linux or OpenBSD on my
workstation?

Microshit is kept alive by brain-dead imbeciles. The first IBM PCs made their way into offices because IBM legitimized the PC as a professional device rather than a toy. That was something Atari, Commodore and others could not do at the time despite the well known fact that their boxen were far superior in terms of performance. > Those people are so fucking stupid that the sudden absence of > the "Start" button, as would be manifest with GNU/Linux, would > send them all into a paralytic stupor. People use it to accomplish tasks and don't want to have to futz with it just to perform those tasks. If you want to explain why Windows rules the desktop market at least try using a legitimate argument like Windows being pre-loaded. At least there is data to back up such a claim. Your rants while mildly entertaining have no such solid argument.

If Linux were more popular back then it would have been the target for such attacks. It wouldn't have mattered much. Currently the majority of attacks are social engineering attacks and some of them are quite sophisticated. Coupled with the first generation of home computer users aging, it's a wide open fertile ground for nasty people. I just got one the other day on my phone. Some off shore person who spoofed a number with the same area code and exchange as my phone calls me and tells me my mortgage is going into collection but he can save me from the collection agency. All fine except I don't have a mortgage. A quick go fuck yourself took care of that one but this is the kind of thing that people fall for. I've also had emails complete with official looking stationary trying to get me to visit links. A quick look at the headers usually shows a source of *.yahoo.com or similar. So how many people know how to differentiate between a fake or real email? Linux isn't going to help them at all. -- Ratchet Jaw The Locked and Loaded Jew

So now you move the goal posts :) Alright, I'll give you that however the reason Linux desktop is not attacked much is because the usage is so low. Linux servers are subject to the exploits I posted above. And OSX an IOS are also attacked. As a desktop system Linux's security model certainly has advantages in keeping the root OS isolated however to an end user when all his files are gone, it's not gonna matter much that his OS remained untouched. The days of clicking on a rogue program are mostly coming to an end and being replaced by social engineering. Ask Julian Assange about that one :) Back in the 90's when the biggest problem was clicking on that naked Jennifer Aniston.jpg file, which was really an .com or .exe file are over and long gone. Even the built in Windows Defender will catch those. An email from a "bank" targeting a senior citizen can have devastating effects though and in a phishing expedition is a far better way of mining data. -- Ratchet Jaw The Locked and Loaded Jew

Linux also has users, but nowhere near Windows.
As such, there's an element of Sutton's law ("Because that's where the money is")
behind the simple raw number comparisons.
