No. The reward is fame and recognition.

For example, I just finished a payroll processing program
for my own use. I would like to contribute this masterpiece
as a FOSS project.

Why? Because I would want the recognition and fame. That's all.
I couldn't care less about the "community."

But I am not going to do it because the UI is not up
to the expected standards. I could spend a LOT more time
polishing it up but I have other fish to fry.

Unless one is receiving a paid commission to develop FOSS
there is no other motivator other than recognition and
fame.

Something you wrote in 2 weeks part-time is a "masterpiece"? I don't

Hey, if Crackhead can, in a couple/few weeks time, outdo
a team of 4 devs who spent a year or two working on their
solution for Intuit, who can say what delusi... uh, miraculous
feats of accomplishment Feeb is capable of.

You are goddamned fucking right.

The back-end processing part is complete, and it does
the job to utter perfection. Payroll is very important
and the IRS will come down heavily if the calculations
are not done correctly.

But as I stated, the UI would require a LOT of work to
bring it to an acceptable state.

What is acceptable?

The UI would have to accommodate TOTAL IDIOTS like
YOU and that kind of feat is indeed hard to accomplish.

I'm sorry, your post is not "acceptable" to the standards upon
which 'the new COLA' is based. You'll have to do better.

The hell it is. I built dozens of idiot-proof GUI systems thru the years.

Post all the code and back-end db and some generic sample data and I'll
crank out an Access GUI for it in no time.

Or slink away and continue shouting about the "masterpiece" that you
won't let anyone else see.

Here's an image you can use to market with... but you'd better
hurry, the IRS has already sent the cops out after her (Feeb's
niece). Here, the cop is seen warning her that she'd better switch
over to Feeb's payroll system pronto lest she face the short arms
of the law:

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! You think so!

You have NO idea how complicated payroll can be. There is 401K
which is not taxable at the federal level but is taxable for
FICA. Then the 401K exemptions differ from state to state.
Then there are local tax considerations.

The same applies to health insurance, retirement plans,
and disability insurance, etc.

Then there are vacation and sick benefits, the accounting
of which can differ among companies. Some companies, for
example, grant a fixed amount of time at the beginning of
a fiscal year. Other companies will grant the benefit
as a function of employee time.

Then there are bonuses, gratuities, and the list goes
on and on.

It is a complicated mess.

Have a look at any COMPREHENSIVE commercial accounting
package to see how they handle this chaos.

I can easily configure my software to handle ANY situation
but to create a UI that will allow an IDIOT USER to do
the same is a BIG JOB.

I'm positive.

But you've gotta give up all your code, db, and business
rules/documentation (along with sample data that won't identify anybody
or any company).

Note that what I say, above, is consistent with for-profit
corporations contributing FOSS, which I believe is the majority of it
developed and contributed today.

Corporations (i.e. corporate management) are not "nice". They are not
"altruistic". They are not looking for "recognition and fame". They
are looking to accomplish a task, or to create a product or service,
in as efficient a manner as possible, and there's nothing wrong with
that.

The same applies to individual contributors, admittedly with more
leeway for other motivations, such as the desire to do something
"good", or to create something "cool".

People who want "recognition and fame" have far better options that
developing computer software, for Pete's sake. Most people could not
name a single famous software developer, but they do recongnize
hundreds of other "famous" people.

Great in theory but it fails in practice.
At least when it comes to FOSS.
The exception being major projects like the kernel for example.

That qualifier may be true but it may have more to do with
what few talk about on this ng, the fact that the vast majority
of projects are now platform agnostic (i.e. growth of Electron
and progressive web apps, etc.). Step away from the desktop
and there's a different image, here's just one (huge) indicator:

"We asked users where the JavaScript they write is used. An
overwhelming 93% of respondents said that they write code
for the web, with a still-substantial 70% saying they write
avaScript that runs on servers, i.e., Node.js. However, many
other application areas including Internet of Things (IoT),
desktop applications, native mobile applications, and others
saw substantial numbers of users, too."

<https://blog.npmjs.org/post/180868064080/this-year-in-javascript-2018-in-review-and-npms>

Node is a relatively small niche in the grand scheme of things.

Because a RETARDED phone is better than nothing,
and most people can't even handle that, much less more.

To run the best software, on the best hardware, you need Windows 10.

I teach my SpeechToText app how to swear, etc.;
just today, I taught it "Bezos".

Does your "smart" phone do this ?

Doesn't need to, if I make the following output visible to
the webpage shown here (output is currently limited to
the browser's console), my "smart" phone would show
the output after analyzing your text:

SpeechToText is where you speak into a microphone, instead of typing text.
I backup my profile ( my vocabulary ), it's called "Relf_Speak".
Nuance Dragon NaturallySpeaking 15.

Can you do that, with your own custom vocabulary, backed up ?

I believe it can, though, I've never messed with it. I use the
text to speech feature to send messages instead of typing
them out.

Back in my day, we could speak into the phone and the other person
could actually *hear* what you said. It was awesome.
