I'm tempted to say "the market has spoken", but I suspect that it is more the demise of the Free/Open nature of USENET because of more appealing (and commercial/proprietary) venues (not the least of which is due to a healthier environment through the adult supervision of moderation to improve personal accountability) that has lost its audience, not that the dearth of advocacy for Linux here is actually proof of anything. OTOH, I believe that the marketplaces do speak some for themselves, although one does need to use the metric of corporate profits, not merely units shipped, to recognize the dynamics and sustainability. For example, in the tablet market, there were a lot of vendors who tried & failed. -hh

Do you not realize the use of private networks? Faraday and Doomsdrzej aka Sliver Slimer had their failures and their mistakes. But one played it cool and didn't do anything too appalling that could not be presented as the wagging of a dog. Thanks to Doomsdrzej aka Sliver Slimer and his 'followers' you now need a go / no-go list (which I configured for NewsLeecher and slrn). If Desk Rabbit and others start trolling him again I will not be able to stop myself... as I said. I'm referring to advocates here, not drive by loons, who are mostly him talking to himself. Doomsdrzej aka Sliver Slimer has toned down the nonstop self-serving, BS attacks he used to post but he is certainly consistent in the truthfulness area. He simple uses psychological manipulation more now to spawn those circuses. Protected code is making fast programs slow. Doomsdrzej aka Sliver Slimer's posts are nothing but a valueless word salad. Over and over, the refrain is he wants to "talk tech", but Doomsdrzej aka Sliver Slimer spends most of his time whining about "obsession". Yes, I agree. But of course chrisv agrees to his own custom-made strawman! /S > After a long, dark age, where personal computing pretty-much > meant Micro$oft, we now have several strong competitors. A claim which is proven by viewing the data on how the usage share of Microsoft's OS in PCs has catastrophically crashed to 82% ... <http://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/desktop/worldwide> ...and one can immediately see that MS's demise is entirely due to Linux, who has exploded to an utterly huge 1.5% share. For perspective, here's the data from a half decade ago: <http://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/desktop/worldwide/2013> Granted, there's now also the mobile market which has grown in the last decade and precipitated a decline in the desktop market, but the desktop is still a market with well over $100B/yr in sales. > >> The only poster who did any real advocacy in the last decade left. > > STFU, "Steve". Well, that quip makes it quite clear that the now-absent real advocate isn't chrisv! > >I believe that the > >marketplaces do speak some for themselves, although one does need > >to use the metric of corporate profits, not merely units shipped, > >to recognize the dynamics and sustainability. > > And here I was, thinking that what is important is software freedom, > and consumers having choices and getting the best value for their > money. Nope. Your personal beliefs don't and can't speak for the market: capitalism is the expression of marketplace freedom of choice, where the consumers themselves decide what is the best value for their money. Consumers decide by "voting with their wallets" just what values get assigned to what product attributes, and the quantitative metric is the return for the company in terms of net sales margins (profits). And because it is the customer who decides, that's what determines how much a manufacturer can actually charge for their product, which determines how much (or little) profit that they can include, and net proceeds is which is the measure of capitalistic success (& failure). > >For example, in > >the tablet market, there were a lot of vendors who tried & failed. > > This isn't comp.hardware.selling, -highhorse. Sorry, but you can't run an OS without hardware. Since this hardware element is inextricably intertwined, sales is a metric to gage the marketplace success/failure, which includes the OS which it employs. Apple's iPad was the market leader/innovator and there were a lot of other vendors who jumped into the market with their copies ... and the facts are that many of them crashed & burned. There invariably were some survivors and new niches carved out, but in capitalism's free & open market, their net proceeds are what indicates their relative success/failure as determined by the buying customer. Today, the winner is Apple, as validated by consumers' wallets paying for the product, including a much larger markup than Apple's competitors can demand. Similarly in the smartphone market, there was a lot of blood in the water as the original iPhone killed off the likes of RIM's Blackberry, and again, a lot of copy attempts failed for awhile before Google's huge investment into Android made it better than barely good enough and so the market of also-rans appears to have stabilized. To then examine the market by the metrics of capitalism, namely the net profits for return-on-investment, once again illustrate that units sold does not automatically correlate to Capitalism's measure of success: Android has the lead in unit sales, but since their consumers aren't willing to pay a comparable markup, they're not ahead in the capitalism's metric, but actually far, far behind. Case in point, Apple's lead in 2016 was such that they took home 91% of the smartphone market's net profits while being far short of a 91% marketshare by units sold... <https://9to5mac.com/2017/03/08/aapl-iphone-profits-profitability-2016-strategy-analytics/> And last year, it was 79%: <https://9to5mac.com/2017/03/08/aapl-iphone-profits-profitability-2016-strategy-analytics/> And this year, it is 86%: <https://appleinsider.com/articles/18/04/17/apple-grabs-86-of-smartphone-profits-globally-iphone-x-alone-seizes-35> So like it or not, the application of capitalism's metric of success in full & open marketplaces says that the smartphone market's winner is iOS. Not Android. This is the quantitative evidence that despite what the likes of chrisv believes (that FOSS is the most important product attribute), the consumer's wallets have voted otherwise. -hh

It is possible to make 'clearly correct' statements which are grossly incomplete. For example, it is clearly correct to note that the temperature of the Sun is 5,778 K, and it is clearly correct to note that a human will immediately combust when exposed to such temperatures. ...but these 'correct' facts doesn't mean that the conclusion is that you'll burst into flames the next time you walk out into sunlight, because what's not been noted is the contribution of its 93 million mile standoff distance. -hh

Ain't a lie ... the source was cited (hence, 121 lines). > Not even someone as stupid as -highhorse could have failed to > understand the my "several strong competitors" serving the personal > computing market were Android, Windows, iOS (and, perhaps, OSX). Incorrect. Chrisv failed to articulate his context, but I did. Specifically, this section was specific to just the desktop market (a later section addressed Mobile). > I'm glad that I didn't read the asshole's garbage. Translation: chrisv can't take the heat of the kitchen, so he tries to pretend that he never wanted to go there. > Linux has a *huge* share, damn-near as large as Windows, and much > larger than any other. Irrelevant, since mobile and desktop are functionally different markets. That's why when smartphones (and the iPad) came out, their units sold weren't included in the total personal computer sales. And still aren't.
