<PRE Style='Font-Family: OCR A !important;'><big><big> Hugh·Huntzinger & @Slimer, Programmers spend long, long hours at the keyboard. So a programmable keyboard makes sense. Programming the mouse makes TOTAL sense. I'm like a keyboardist, but this is my piano: Jeff-Relf.Me/g600.PNG Music helps, and I take calls; so a programmable headset, and surround sound, makes sense. Jeff-Relf.Me/Programmable_Logitech_g35_USB_Gaming_HeadSet_.JPG I lay in bed, naked, because that's the best way to code, hour after hour, day after day. My IPD 4K monitor swings over my bed; so I need the monitor arm. I need the 4K because I modify tons of code/text. Jeff-Relf.Me/Visual-Studio-2013-Toolbars.PNG Jeff-Relf.Me/Workrite.Poise.Monitor.Arm.JPG For me, a desktop is the ONLY way to go, it's not optional. I'm the direct opposite of a road warrior.

I have a programmable mouse and I love it. Makes me much more efficient.
When I am at a different computer without my setup it really jumps out at
me.
The main thing I program my mouse for is so my next / prev buttons work as I
want them to in any program... moving from tab to tab in browsers and
editors with tabs, moving up and down files in file listings, etc.
I also have the middle mouse button set up to do common features in many
programs - largely hide / show things I commonly want to show (extras in
Photoshop, read / unread items in mail and Usenet and RSS readers, etc.) but
also sometimes special features I want quick access to without having to
remember the normal hot key, such as showing the full timeline in video
editors.

Well, I take the Patriot for long trips because of the extra room and the fact that just about any mechanic can repair the car. A BMW requires you to go to a BMW dealer. I mean, I like the car but I hate to be forced to go to a specific place when my car broke down in the middle of nowhere. Either way, luxury cars are for my wife. Its been a long time since I've personally bothered with any of what I called "twitch" games. To each their own, of course. Doesn't mean that I have no GPU needs, but merely that they're for different end state purposes, such as to accelerate renders of various filters for photography, etc. > >>> Similarly, clock speed isn't necessarily everything, > >>> as today's systems can easily have their performance > >>> bottlenecked at I/O... > >> > >> Maybe he needs that much power for programming, but > >> I sincerely doubt it... > > > > Been a loooong time since I've done such things; my > > ancient recollection is that horsepower wasn't needed > > when using a text editor to write code, but it was > > needed when it came time to compile (or run in a real > > time interpretor. Interesting, although in a different direction for me: my approach would be that any car that one wouldn't be willing to risk taking on a road trip with because of mechanical reliability concerns had better either be a fun old roadster, or a daily driver that's now quite old and about to be replaced. Life is too short to tolerate an unreliable car, unless the car itself is worth it (shades of Lucas Electronics jokes). Ditto in how this gets applied the same to one's PC's too. -hh

That's what's surprising about the Jeep Patriot: it's an incredibly reliable car. Its ball joints leave a little to be desired but everything else is quite splendid considering I live in what would be considered an extreme climate for cars. It's good enough that I would actually consider getting a Dodge sports car as my next vehicle but I get the impression Dodge doesn't build them the way that Jeep does. -- Slimer Encrypt.

I don't know why you guys ( Hugh·Huntzinger and @Slimer ) think desktops are for "twitch" gamers ONLY. As a programmer, I spend long hours at the keyboard. So I want the very best keyboard, the very best mouse, the best headset, the best monitor, a monitor arm, etc. "Mobility" means NOTHING to me; you couldn't GIVE me a $10,000 gaming laptop, much less a cell phone.

That's nonsensical, for at the very least, if someone did give you some super gaming laptop, you could take it and then sell it off to buy whatever desktop stuff you wanted. But be that as it may, the trend for reduced form factors is nothing to sneeze at. For example in your use case, you only need one drive bay, and probably ~95% of the time while you're writing code, you're not really pulling much horsepower, so a Small Form Factor (SFF) machine like the Mac mini or its Intel equivalent would probably do just fine. Sure, if you don't care about how much room stuff takes up, as SFF isn't value-added to you personally to make it worth paying more for, but there's ample other folks out there who do place some value on SFF systems such that the technology has become part of the desktop market. Thus, the days of the big honking desktop box are continue to be in decline, particularly amongst consumers willing to pay a bit more to improve the system's size/mobility. Part and parcel with this is the continuing growth in hard drive capacity, as well as the ongoing decline in SSD cost per GB ... with many users not even taxing a single SSD, let alone a 3.5" drive of a couple of TB (especially now that there's now some at 6TB), the the use case who materially differentiates on having bays for several drives is an increasingly small niche. This doesn't mean that it doesn't exist, but merely that they're no longer as representative of the mainstream such as was the case when a hard drive was 500MB ... or even 4GB or even 40GB and there were workflow use cases where it legitimately merited a hardware solution which entailed having more than two or three local hard drives. And with a 256GB SSD, you're an example of this too: you've demonstrated that you don't need the capabilities of your big empty box, and that you basically bought on lowest bidder rather than for a need to fill it out to something akin to its utmost capability. FWIW, I'm not too terribly different either, as while I'm exploiting a strategy of multiple spindles, I'm not dong so with the largest possible capacity hard drives sold today - - but in this case, the number of spindles is an integral part of the use case requirements: a pair of drives in RAID-0 serves to punch up the bandwidth to 200+ MB/s, which isn't pragmatically possible on a single platter drive today, and while it could be done on a single SSD, I don't think that there's all that many of them out there with 4TB SSDs yet in a single 3.5" form factor package, particularly at a competitive price point vs the current capability as a benchmark. -hh

<PRE Style='Font-Family: OCR A !important;'><big><big> Hugh·Huntzinger, If you tried to give me an expensive laptop, I'd refuse it. If you gave it to me anyway, I'd pass it on to one of my housemates, like used clothes, I wouldn't sell it. Laptop power supplies suck balls, for one thing. The monitor&keyboard would be useless to me, a tragic waste. My $120, 500-Watt fanless power supply: newEgg.COM/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182169 MiniMacs/PCs are WAY underpowered; they can't run my 4k monitor, much less 4k videos. And they don't have the connectors that I need. Again, "Mobility" means NOTHING to me. > I don't think that there's [better] 4TB SSDs yet, > in a single 3.5" form factor package, > particularly at a competitive price point > vs [my] current capability as a benchmark. My 3 year old SSD has the fastest controller, giving me the most IO operations per second, and the 1 TeraByte "Crucial M550" uses the same controller; see: AnandTech.COM/show/7864/crucial-m550-review-128gb-256gb-512gb-and-1tb-models-tested

An Intel HD 4600 or 4000 is more than enough if you're not going to be playing games and that is what people will find in the majority of laptops. As such, a laptop is just the right workhorse for many tasks including those done by a GPU. >> As a programmer, I spend long hours at the keyboard. >> >> So I want the very best keyboard, the very best mouse, >> the best headset, the best monitor, a monitor arm, etc. > > Nothing of which has to do with the specification requirements > of the PC that's driving that stuff, and laptops have progressed > o have enough 'horsepower' to satisfy those needs, so they > can't be totally ignored out of hand. Exactly. The biggest obstacles in building a decent laptop were the cooling (which has improved tremendously) and the hard disk (which tended to be slower on a mobile PC). However, laptops now use the same kind of SSD as what desktop users would have. The processors are still not as powerful, but you're looking at a 10 to 20% penalty at most. < snip> -- Slimer Encrypt.

I even took a look at the Mac mini and it is actually capable of driving a 4K display ... although at "only" 30fps: adquate for cinema (24fps) as well as photography applications (still not video), even though its is short of what gamers typically like. In any case, the use case of a high rez screen to do text-based coding on is akin to static photography, so the mini would be an adequate solution, as well as many equivalent laptops. > >> As a programmer, ... > > > > Nothing of which has to do with the specification requirements > > of the PC that's driving that stuff, and laptops have progressed > > o have enough 'horsepower' to satisfy those needs, so they > > can't be totally ignored out of hand. > > Exactly. Which is what I pointed out several posts back in that the main areas of a performance hit concern for a classical programmer would be after they've updated their code and shifting to runtime work, such as a real time interpreter, a classical compile, etc. -hh

The Mac Mini's inability to drive 60fps might not be a testament to its power as much as a hardware limitation of the DisplayPort version that it has. If I'm not mistaken, you need version 1.4 of the spec and I believe that it only uses 1.2. < snip > -- Slimer Encrypt.

"Update: Lack of 60Hz 4K support on the 2014 Mini is
actually an Intel GPU limitation, not a DisplayPort
limitation. This document{hyperlink} outlines the
resolutions and refresh rates supported by various
Intel GPUs."

And in looking at the Apple Store today, it looks
like you can get a non-bottom-of-the-barrel Mac mini
with 8GB RAM, i5 CPU, and 256GB SSD for ~$900. How
that compares to an equivalent Dell/HP/..., don't
really know (their websites are a mess).

Apple needs to start considering packing a decent GPU into their Mac
Mini. The Linux losers are more than correct in stating that as far as
hardware goes, it's a rip-off at its current price level. It doesn't
need to play every game on the market, but a mid-range mobile GPU would
be a lot better than some shitty on-CPU solution like an Intel HD. A
separate chip might be able to support the 4k resolutions that some Mac
Mini users will crave.

Sounds like he's really hitting the new shipment of glue. I wonder if the DNC shipped it to him in thanks for his support?

<PRE Style='Font-Family: OCR A !important;'><big><big> Today, the Mac Mini is a REAL desktop PC; it has a REAL power supply ( instead of a wall wart ) and I can plug in my 4k IPS DisplayPort monitor into it. $2,500 gets you a Mac Mini with: 3 GigaHz dual-core Intel Core i7 ( Turbo Boost up to 3.5 GigaHz ) with 4MB on-chip shared L3 cache. My i7-4790S has 8 virtual cores, 4 physical cores, 8 MegaBytes of L3 cache, and 4 GigaHz Max. My PC is Micro ATX, so it's not large. ASUS GRYPHON Z97, LGA 1150, Intel Z97, DisplayPort, HDMI, SATA 3 (6 Gb/s), USB 3 (5 Gb/s), Micro ATX, Intel Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132133 And my SSD has the highest IO operations per second, 87,298 IOPS; i.e. it has the fastest controller. No degradation after 2.5 years of use. Five year warrenty. So my PC ( sans monitor, mouse, headset, and all that ) is worth more than $2,500.
