YMMV. Don't really think that 'reboot' is all that

And it's not just Scott that hasn't upgraded, Ezekiel is still using WinXP's Outlook. Chances are, Win8 or Win10 will do what you want, and do it far better than Win7 could. Problem is, you'd have to google for the solution. The solution might be hard to find, and it might require exceptional technical skills. For me, that's not a problem; always, I run the latest software. For others, though, they need WinXP and Outlook; because they can't upgrade, they don't know how.

Having just migrated to Office 2013 today (ironically), the changes in the UI are being a bag of pain. The white-on-white (borders/box) UI was a horrifically bad idea, already rectified. In any case, some of the dislike of change is emotional simply that it is change. > Chances are, Win8 or Win10 will do what you want, > and do it far better than Win7 could. Overall, I'd be reluctant to rely on "too old" solutions for certain things, simply because there's uncertainty from if it has been adequately patched over the years to keep it up to date - - not from a features perspective, but from a security/vulnerabilities perspective. > Problem is, you'd have to google for the solution. > The solution might be hard to find, > and it might require exceptional technical skills. Much of the "how do I now find?" stuff is learning curve for the UI, which a Google search may help. The trick is in finding the stuff that's both important and common to that particular individual, and if its new UI location is as convenient as before, for otherwise it will be a recurring productivity hit (hinderance). > For me, that's not a problem; > always, I run the latest software. I'll migrate when it is (a) warranted, (b) the trades are better defined, and (c) is compatible with my overall workload & schedule constraints. Something that's merely "new" is not of itself a justification, but rather that which makes it new needs to be deemed to be a benefit of merit...Risk:Benefit applies, always. > For others, though, they need WinXP and Outlook; > because they can't upgrade, they don't know how. From an "appliance" standpoint, they may be content and not interested in being disrupted to a new/different workflow. Another downside risk could be uncertanties with compatibility to other legacy applications or workflows - - I've had some scripts in OS X go belly up as the result of OS updates, for example. -hh

I have Win8 but I don't use it very often though and much prefer to use
Win7.
Why XP - why not? This (virtual) machine isn't really used for anything
other than posting to usenet.
> Do you have a personal website ?
I do have a website at a domain which I own. I use my domain for various
things including my website, a place where I can FTP and drop large files
and the hosting service gives me N-many thousand email addresses so I use it
for email too. Also used for syncing contact lists, calendars, etc across
devices.

Not this one. This one made it through. Perhaps it's because it was a reply
to a Eternal-Sept post.

I don't really care that much to bother switching. I'm generally fine with

Ezekiel, you're using a ·very· outdated client ( WinXP's Outlook ) connected to a server that censors·out my posts ( Eternal-Noobs.Orgy ). "Blueworldhosting.COM" is much faster, more reliable. Some posts (like this one) do make it through. Eventually I see a good
number of them. Just not new threads that you start.

Put this into the "don't care" category.

I'm fine with that and won't lose any sleep. It's not out of shame... it's

Because running Windows 7 for games in a VM is always called "dual
boot", right?
Idiot.
> c. Scott updated a graphics driver in (a);
Now you're making this up as you go along.
> d. Went into (b) to run a game under Windows;
Since you appear to be making this up as you go along, let's indulge
your thinking on this:
> e. The reported problem [exception] happened;
Yes, because chassis fans are _always_ under control of the guest OS's
of VMs.
Do you have any idea how stupid that sounds? (Probably now, but at the
time, did you?)
I'll spare folks a continued blow-by-blow, and cut to the chase:
> f. Scott reverted (c) {without rebooting}
> g. Problem (e) repeated;
> h. Killed (b) to go back into (a) [fans started running again]
> i. Rebooted (a);
> j. Restarted (b) & (d);
> l. Problem solved.
Nice try at "fan fiction", but your plot sux.
I'll try to describe this in words of one syllable:
Doze on bare boot two not spin fans.
But Lin on bare boot one spin fans.
The only mention of "graphics drivers" was pointing out that blaming
Windows for this was tit-for-tat regarding FlatSlime's inability to
properly use his hardware on Linux.
Finally, for people who don't know the intricacies of PC systems -- such
as H.Hefner here -- when I said "chipset drivers" I meant "motherboard
chipset drivers". Which, you know, CONTROL THE FANS.
I guess my mistake was assuming that would be obvious from the
context...but clearly, my writing needs to be dumbed down, so that one
doesn't end up with the weird fan fiction of Hugh Hefner.
Finally, Laughing Boy goes off into the weeds talking about
reboots...but the system had been rebooted between Linux and Windows
multiple times, and it was evident after putting 2+2 together, that
Windows wasn't running the chassis fans despite those reboots. But when
Linux was booted, the chassis fans ran. Only after a power fail did
Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium behave itself.

Sorry Scott, but you're the OP and you made a purposefully
vague allegation without any citation to an individual, just
as you just did again ("flatface sock").
Specifically, as the OP you claimed:
"Then some trash-talking low-life staggers in, reeking
of booze, and starts advocating XP."
No cite to substantiate your claim. Nor even the
mention of what you now have called a 'flatface sock'.

even more evidence to my observation: your OP post was
just yet another "sour grapes" whine rife with butthurt.

Nope.
We just think that an EVEN OLDER yardstick should not be a problem.

Being critical of MS's frequency of "churn" (OS revisions) is problemmatic when Linux's churn is typically at a higher rate. -hh

During the XP years, he wasn't on that project, until Balmer asked him to look at the code. Indeed it was a mess, so Cutler chastised the development team for not using the assigned tools. Right now, it looks like MS is cleaning up a lot of those problems and have actually removed a lot of bloat. Win10 should be very interesting, but I'll be a hold out till the dust settles down.
