Why not (heh) slrn? You should really wrap your arms around Linux and
embrace the 70s and 80s. Like owl does.

Does the current Pan have context-sensitive menus? Last I checked they
had barely implemented them (meaning most menu choices were available at
all times). Real impressive.

Things have not gotten better over time, DFS. Just different, and
worse in a lot of ways.

How they gonna target the advertising without that?!

Keep a PMA, baby! Positive Mental Attitude.

One thing DID get better: it was a momentous day in my life when my
first set of urethane skateboard wheels with sealed bearings arrived in
the mail, all the way from Southern Cal as I recall.

things? Linux things or life things or United States things or world
things?

Truth is, I pine for the US of a decade I never experienced: the 50s.
Adding the music of the 60s and 70s would be real nice!

I'm partial to the twenties.  Art deco architecture and interior design;
cute flappers and gorgeous silent film actresses; badass cars. Everything

Indeed. I don't know what we're doing today that's so great, that we
couldn't do 20 years ago, despite the fact that we are now using
multi-core CPU's running at multi-GHz rates, and 1000x (!) the memory.

That too. Maybe I just have a bad attitude, but I often find myself
thinking "everything just keeps getting worse, nothing ever improves."

Well, I do like HDTV, and some other modern improvements...

I know that my 2000 machine could only barely decode DVD discs (P3-533)
whereas today's machines do so effortlessly. I guess that's one thing. I
imagine that the biggest benefits are specific to media.

4k is very nice albeit useless if you don't have a subscription to a
service that actually pushes out content at that resolution. As it is, OTA
is either 720p or 1080i, sometimes 480i. Cable is generally 1080i as well
with a specialty channel or two added for a 4k presentation of an
occasional sports match. Netflix, as far as I know, is the only service
consistently pushing out 4k video and some gaming consoles manage to
display it on some games as well. Whether it actually improves the gaming
experience is another matter though.

I don't know what happened to my own setup of Pan but it really does ake
a while to load and often treats posts I've read as unread even though it
shows that they've been downloaded. It's still usable though.

As for things like slrn, I'm sure I would have adopted software like that
and alpine if I used modest hardware like what I had back in the day but
nowadays, it just seems pointless. I doubt it would allow me to do
anything better.

Pan is complete crap.
How many times do you load it up and it doesn't even d/l new messages but
then you restart it and the new messages suddenly appear?

Complete garbage.

Yeah, it's not too great but it gets the job done in the end. I also
think it's the only Usenet reader I've used which loads the 2-bit images
some posters have attached to their Usenet identities.

Pan was the closest I could get to XNews when I left Windows and it's
definitely not "crap." It uses a good filter system and does a good job with
quotes.

I actually disagree about the filter system. So far, it's the worst and
least intuitive I've come across since the function, in the software
itself, seems broken and you have to edit the config file on your own. Of
course, you have to understand _how_ to edit it as well and lucky for me,
Fabian Russell and Steve Carroll helped me out quite a bit with that.

Thunderbird is a _lot_ better than Pan for Usenet but I'm not much in
favour of using Mozilla software.

I completely disagree about Thunderbird and Usenet. I thought it was
terrible. Mangled quotes, hard (for me) to use. And what I really disliked
about it is that I once mistakenly sent out a personal email respone over my
Usenet account. (Heartfelt letter to my younger brother who, at the time,
was strugglng with addiction. I've seen others do something similar.) That
was the last time I ever used Thunderbird for Usenet. Since then I've always
used something specifically designed for newsgroups, basically Xnews (then
Xnews under Wine), then Pan, then slrn.

That said, choice is good. Use what you're comfortable with. I'm not sure
why you don't want to use Mozilla software, but I'm sure there's a reason.

Mozilla = social justice warrior advocates who got rid of Brendan Eich
because he had donated to an organization which was against abortion and
donated to Antifa. Good points about Thunderbird though and I have to
admit that I faced the same. It's one of the reasons I use Evolution over
Thunderbird for e-mail.

Yeah, that's true, but pretty soon that's going to be just about every
corporation. The blackmail and extortion racket is pervasive and the
screeching mobs see no ethical delimma in doing "whatever it takes." Exactly
the same mindset of those attacking Kavanaugh (probably controlled by the
same slime).

Well, if all corporations under the sun eventually get controlled my
brain-dead social justice warriors, I'll have to stop using all software
made by all corporations under the sun. I'm resisting this shite at all
costs.

It's not even a matter of left vs. right anymore; it's a matter of sane
vs. insane, normal vs. abnormal. I have no interest in supporting the
evil of the left in any way, even accidentally.

No one cares what little catholic gurls think.
Just lift your skirt and genuflect like a good cathoilc.
If you were in a dark room, and I turned on a lamp, you'd bow to the lamp.
Idiot.

I am sure they will weep.

There are loonies on the left, but you think equal rights is "evil".
