If they are not influential then why do so many open source project seek to
copy them? Why are Open Office and LibreOffice made to be clones of MS
Office (minus the Ribbon, though I believe there are extensions to do that,
too). Why do so many Linux DE's use the same basic look at MS's task bar,
notification area, and Start Button, merely adding their own twist to it?
Where do you think Apple got the idea for contextual menus and drag
indicators.

Sure, MS does a lot of copying and they are not leaders in design and
innovation in the same way Apple is... but they have been very influential
in the industry.

While I agree IE is not the best, the idea anyone can tell this is just
silly.

Wow. You really are an idiot.

You think people dont take note of the company that provides the office
SW for over 90% of the world's business desktops?

You're deluded or stupid. A combination of the two most likely.

No. Your statement is.

Says who?

IE was crap but has come on a lot.

Aha. Another COLA visionary.

LOL. You sure like the sound of your own whiny little voice.

He is back in his worship of open source phase. Give him a month and watch
it not work well for him... then he will leave it and bad mouth open source
again. All the while he will bad-mouth Apple more than he used to because he
thinks that is somehow an attack against me.

He is all about emotion... he shuns reasoning.

Yes, it has. Still not my preferred browser but lots of people use it and
like it - even those who have seen the competition.

By that token, I suppose that the rest of the technological companies
will be imitating Windows 8 and pushing very hard for every one of their
devices to sport a touchscreen. Oh wait, NOBODY is imitating Windows 8
and neither Apple nor Google care about touchscreens? But I thought
Microsoft was influential!

You obviously don't seem to understand the word "influential." Go back
to licking the crust from Snit's asshole.

It has improved but it still provides the absolute worst experience of
the three. It doesn't respect HTML standards, it lets through the
greatest number of ads and does little to stop tracking of any kind. The
only areas where IE performs well is in hardware acceleration (who
cares, seriously?) and start-up time (due to the fact that parts of it
load with Windows). In every other area, IE fails miserably. Since
reading isn't your strength, I am bundling a video for you:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6oEDWoaPi4 .

By all means, you should look up photos of me and determine whether I

Your claim is extremely ignorant, though I should've asked you to
clarify what you meant by 'influential'.

They're not doing too well - not driving the industry - in smartphones
or tablets, so if that's what you mean by 'influential' you're correct.

But many MS products are influential in the IT world: Windows Server,
Exchange Server, SQL Server, SharePoint, Visual Studio.

In the general world/media: Windows/Office (as you said), XBox, Kinect,
some games, Skype

They make/made a LOT of products:

I think IE is a good browser. So are Chrome, Firefox and Opera.

(I use Opera on Windows, and Chrome on Linux)

Damn near everyone has been a victim of MS' business tactics to some extent and no amount of hand wringing or spinning can change that fact. Trying to pretend the past hasn't played a large part of the current landscape is bullshit and you know it, which is why statements like this exist:

"Microsoft's predatory campaign has caused significant anticompetitive effects, has injured consumers, and threatens to cause even greater harm in the future."

To concentrate all of our time on Microsoft's anti-competitive practises
would be to only paint half of a picture. They've also shown a complete
disregard for the privacy of their users. Skype is continuously
monitored by the NSA and the company regularly spies on Hotmail users (
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/03/21/hotmail-spying_n_5003855.html
). Why, exactly, should we continue to give them our hard-earned money
knowing that respecting us is not one of their priorities?

    No. They're just Brand X.

    The rest doesn't matter.

Jeb is clueless as usual.

It's on the first page of Google hits for "pre-loaded Linux
computers"

It's also the main sponsor of the Linux Action Show. In fact, they send
the guys machines to play with while they record their show. To me, that
speaks volumes about the profitability of the enterprise.

They are a good company and if more of the hypocrite Linux
"advocates" supported them, they might even become a great company
and make lot's of money while promoting Linux.

But the Linux "advocates" are the biggest hypocrites on the planet
and since they also tend to be cheap they will support Microsoft
loaded machines instead of paying a little more for a Linux vendor's
machine.

The hypocrisy here truly is alarming. When I first came here, I expected
the advocates to be equipped with ThinkPenguin computers (overpriced
computers using dated technology which just happens to have free
drivers). I'm surprised that they're instead feeding the Microsoft
machine by being cheapskates.

They rationalize their purchases like no other group I have ever
seen.
In the professional audio groups there are people who will NEVER buy
certain products no matter how good the offer is. And that goes for
computer systems as well. They tend to practice what they preach.

Linux "advocates"?
They go where cheap is in and then at the same time complain about
the very company and products they are supporting with their money.

It's bizarre.

I use what works. I have tools from Apple, from the open source community,
from Microsoft, from Logitech, from Cisco, from Motorola, from View Sonic,
and from many more - I do not get the obsession with sticking to a single
company or development method.

See, I can forgive that. What I can't forgive is the fact that they
don't see anything wrong with using proprietary software. In my case,
though Nouveau does an awful job and is crash-prone, it would be my
objective to use it as much as possible instead of NVIDIA's drivers to
make as clean a desktop as possible. I'd even use free codecs for my
music and video within reason. I'm surprised that they're not pushing
for the same thing. It seems like hypocrisy not to. However, I
understand their position anyway as GNU/Linux is indeed all about
freedom and choice. You can choose to live a clean computing life or you
can choose to just use what does the best job.

Not only that - some of them actually have jobs developing on and for
Windows. Most run Windows at work.

Like this bozo Goblin:

Goob: I don't have a Windows job.
DFS: What OS do you use at work?
Goob: Windows.

heh!

He probably thinks more people have heard of System76 than know that Android
is based on Linux.
