window in foreground is Thunar. 1st file in list is being downloaded
via Chromium.

Chromium reports 459 MB downloaded, but Thunar shows 481 MB.

MS is doomed.

MS is just bad at maths. A megabyte is defined as 2^20 bytes, whereas
Microsoft calls a Megabyte 1,000,000 bytes. This is the reason for the
difference between 459 MB and 481 MB.

Amazing, the stupid stuff Doofus whines about, isn't it? Makes you wonder
if the clown knows the difference between a MB and a MiB.

Same for Google, by the way, since they probably labelled the number
incorrectly. Verified with a calculator, 459 MiB is about 484 MB.

Actually, I worked backwards and 484 Million Bytes came to 458.71 MiB.

You are quite right. Initially the MB was defined as 2^20, but the SI
(under some pressure from industry) decided to define it as 1,000,000
bytes. It makes disks look bigger. This is why the term MiB was
introduced to specify the original 2^20 value.

I don't care what anyone says. A MB is 2^20 bytes. 8)

Yes, it is stupid for 2 apps to report wildly differing MB sizes.

> Makes you wonder if the clown knows the difference between a MB and a MiB.

Why are you bringing MiB into this Linux/FOSS shitware fiasco, putz?

Chromium reports MB. Thunar reports a different MB.

FOSS clearly wins... when the contest is 'Who can toss out the least
tested hobbyware in existence?'

Why the innumeracy? 484 MB isn't 481 MB.

This is all being done on Linux, using open source.

It's FOSS that can't handle the "maths".

I believe Windows actually does the same thing. In fact, I'm fairly sure
that if I only downloaded 100MB of a 3GB file, Windows will already have
allocated 3GB to the downloading file regardless of whether it's
actually there or not.
