DirectX 11.1 is now part of the Windows 8 SDK;
no longer is it a separate SDK.
Oddly, Visual Studio 2013 omits the Windows 8 SDK.
··········
@Silver·Slimer, I know nothing about OpenGL.

Windows 8's UI uses DirectX 11.1, big time;
so you must allow for multiple back buffers.
And, to do that, you need a good graphics card.

Also, Mozilla FireFox/Thunderbird uses DirectX;
so, likely, OpenGL is -not- the way to go.
Besides, Linux/Unix never had the best graphics.

DirectX 11.1 has improved support for
hardware accelerated decoding -- "WindowsCodecs.H",
.JPG, h264 ( .MP4, .MKV ), etc.

DirectX 11.1, on Windows 8, is faster because,
for the first time ever, it has integerated
Direct3D, Direct2D, hard/soft·ware decoders,
and DirectWrite into one nice, integrated package.

>
> How do you like that monitor?

I love it. It's about 18 inches from my face.
It's swivelled portrait; so, in a maximized window,
browsing or editing, I see a lot of text.

Right now, I'm editing this post in a Visual Studio tab,
150 columns wide, 117 rows deep. I love that.
http://Jeff-Relf.Me/Visual-Studio-2013-Toolbars.PNG

But, in portait, it's only 29 Hz (fps);
so, when the camera pans a scene,
in a video, it jitters/studders.

99.9% of the time that doesn't matter, no jitter/studder.
The video games I wrote/play look fine.

Also, an unscaled 1080p/HD video is tiny,
at the bottom of my screen, while I edit and/or browse.

Often, I'm only listening, not watching;
i.e. the video isn't even on the screen.

My $160, 40 Watt, 200 core, Quadro K600 graphics card
uses twice the watts of my (diskless) PC.
My CPU is fanless, as is my 500 Watt powersupply.

I bought a $430, 50 Watt, 400 core, Quadro K2000
video card, to see if it'd remove the (rare) studder...
it had no effect at all, no improvement.

If my monitor were 120 Hz,
I'd need a more powerful, hotter/louder CPU;
so it wouldn't be worth it, not for me.

I just bought a $430 graphics card:

  nVidia Quadro K2000

  Supports 3 DisplayPort monitors and 1 DVI.

  384 CUDA Parallel-Processing Cores.

  2 GB GDDR5 Frame Buffer Memory.

  51 Watts Max. ( -very- low power usage ).

  https://www.google.com/search?q=Quadro+K2000

It should be almost 4 time faster than
my current card, the Quadro K600.

Ah, yes, you have now sank to spelling flames. Amazingly insightful of you!

Not much, but the few things can be nice

* package mgmt (eg sudo pacman -S gedit-plugins) of virtually
   all software
* easy install/switching of desktops
* free of cost

Lots of techie stuff not available in Windows
* contact and get responses from the actual developers
* comprehensible and standardized filesystem hierarchy
* fix crapware bugs with the actual source
* save user config in separate /home partition
   = reinstall OS and keep your user config
* dead simple to do C/C++ console coding (create simple Makefile, write
   code, make it, run it)
* well-integrated terminal (some editors, like Geany, even have a
   terminal embedded in the GUI interface)
* man pages
* strip off ALL GUI components and boot/run it from command prompt

On the other hand, Windows has the best apps and games, better
peripheral hardware support, more responsive GUI, and a more consistent
look and feel. On the power user/geek side, Windows has better system
monitors (Resource Monitor, Performance Monitor, System Diagnostics),
far superior Event logging, an ODBC administrator, Group and Security
Policies. The interfaces for managing/admin Windows blow Linux
interfaces away.

And PowerShell on Windows seems to have duplicated most bash commands
and functionality:

Being free of cost is excellent but particularly interesting for people
who need to re-install after a while. If you have a Windows 7 desktop
and after three years need to re-install, you're installing a 2009 OS
and then have to do 5 years worth of updates IN ADDITION to
re-installing all of your software and drivers. GNU/Linux's free nature
allows the user to instead install a more recent version of the same OS
(at no charge) in less time. The fact that the software is in the
repositories as well ensures that re-installing software won't lead to
any kind of malware being installed simultaneously. That's a gigantic
advantage.

> Lots of techie stuff not available in Windows
> * contact and get responses from the actual developers

As well as the ability to financially support them in exchange for
certain bugs being fixed or features being implemented... or simply just
to support them.

> * comprehensible and standardized filesystem hierarchy

Agreed. I have to agree that I much prefer the ways everything is
organized in GNU/Linux despite the fact that I was born into DOS.

> * fix crapware bugs with the actual source

If you're capable. :P

> * save user config in separate /home partition
> = reinstall OS and keep your user config

The first one can be accomplished with Windows by using a separate HD
for the system and for the user's files. I did this for the longest
time. Or, simply by creating a separate partition and ensuring that
Windows stores all personal stuff in that separate partition. However,
GNU/Linux allows me to do this more simply and at installation time. In
no way is there a way to re-install Windows and keep user configuration
though. A big plus to GNU/Linux.

> * dead simple to do C/C++ console coding (create simple Makefile, write
> code, make it, run it)

It should be mentioned that the programming tools in GNU/Linux are also
free. Anyone wishing to learn how to program can do so more easily and
much more cheaply within GNU/Linux.

> * well-integrated terminal (some editors, like Geany, even have a
> terminal embedded in the GUI interface)

And some of us prefer copying/moving files from within a terminal
regardless of the fact that it's possible to perform those tasks within
the GUI as in Windows or on OS X. Obviously though, these things can be
accomplished within the commercial operating systems as well.

> * man pages

For absolutely every program. Very good point.

> * strip off ALL GUI components and boot/run it from command prompt

It is essentially possible for people to do all of their computing
directly from within the CLI. It's obviously not always pretty but a lot
of people prefer the general responsiveness and feeling of control of
CLI-based programs to whatever the GUI offers.

It should be noted that Windows has better peripheral hardware support
for RECENT hardware. For anything older than five years, Windows has
terrible support and happens to be infinitely inferior to GNU/Linux
which NEVER loses support for hardware and only gains it with each
kernel release.

I really like the way OS X handles the User folder (though it is not
perfect). Specifically things like Preferences and QuickTime extensions and
the like are easy to find and move in and out of their folders to test
things. This has been *reduced* in Mavericks by caching of plist files. I
wish there was an easy way to flush that cache (maybe a button in the folder
like the Trash has for emptying). This way you could toss preference files
and test things more easily.

This is the norm for OS X as well. Heck, I recently re-installed my OS as
part of troubleshooting (odd graphics error I sometimes run into... not a
big deal but just weird).

Right. Still, if you live and breath in the CLI Linux is a great choice.

Largely true. Also, the claim that Windows has the best apps is not always
true, though it sometimes is. OS X has a lot of the best-of-class apps as
well.

DFS, Windows has X11 and Unix·like consoles,
and you can write apps for them, e.g. slrn;
so, obviously, you can't call that "a Linux advantage".

Better yet, write your own console·like apps; to wit:

It is a variant of X. A bad one.
And yes, you can write programs for that.
Unbelievable ugly ones, since they have to rely on very basic stuff.
What you see on every desktop linux is not "X11" at all, it is programs
written for a DE like Gnome or KDE, which provide *much* more GUI stuff than
X11 alone can do.

In short, your claim is not utterly wrong. It is still stupid bollocks

And yet when you are shown how a Linux distro screws up cut and paste you
claim this is because it is "standard X behaviour":

---------------------------------------------------------------

  Peter Köhlmann, in reference to <http://goo.gl/IjlkV>:
    -----
    You both show just *again* your incredible cluelessness. That is
    *standard* X behaviour, you cretins. That Snot Michael Glasser
    knows *nothing* about that is normal, he is the worst "IT teacher"
    of all time. He knows nothing usefull about computing.
    -----
The video, of course, shows things other than just standard X
behavior. Peter never showed any understanding of this.
