http://bayimg.com/paNhhAAFl Right-click a file, choose 'open with' then 'Other application...' then 'Show other applications' and the Files app is listed twice (so is Rhythmbox but it's off the screenshot). I've seen this type of half-ass 'list the same app multiple times' bug in Linux going back 8 years. The Linux kualitee shines thru yet again.

OS X had this for a few months. Apple fixed it. It is not horrible that complex software has bugs - all does. Amazing! Funny enough, I was considering putting Ubuntu on my wife's HP Elitebook 8560p laptop sine it is no longer being used at work. That image alone discouraged me from giving it a chance. I guess I'll just pay the 80$ or so for the Windows 8 license. -- Silver Slimer Wikipedia & OpenMedia Supporter

It's a Windows 7 Pro installation with the open-source encryption software on it. I forget the name of it but it's installed. The laptop doesn't have a product key on it so unless I install GNU/Linux on it, I'd have to buy a new license. As it is, I'm not sure if she can give it to me (they sent her a new laptop but didn't inform her on what to do with the old one). However, if she CAN, I'm going to use it to its fullest potential. -- Silver Slimer Wikipedia & OpenMedia Supporter

Go for it if you think she won't mind Win8. I only paid $14.99 to MS
for Win8, and I still feel ripped off. But I'll be OK if they give me
free or cheap upgrades to a Win9 that completely removes the Tiles and
ModernUI and restores the desktop front and center.
None of the 12 Ubuntu bugs I found seem dangerous enough to cause data
loss or system problems. Mainly they're the result of lack of testing
and commitment by the developers.
I'm not about to waste time reporting them - I don't believe for a
second they'll ever be fixed, considering there are nearly 49,000
confirmed, triaged or in progress bugs in Ubuntu Launchpad.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bugs?advanced=1
Recap:
1. 'free driver' results in taskbar and launcher icons off the screen
2. apps open based on file extension
3. apps in Software Center not sorted alphabetically
4. restore vs drag-drop from Trash inconsistent
5. default font in XTerm very tiny - not sure if it can be changed
6. default is to spy on you by sending search terms and IP address
to Canonical and 3rd parties
7. some apps listed 2x or more in the 'Open With' list, and elsewhere
8. tries to open a text document with a CD/DVD burning app if you
choose Open With then Find Apps Online
9. old dpkg.log data shows even after partition formatting
10. log viewer menus don't match the documentation
11. Software Center lists free of cost software for purchase, and
you can't install them
12. log viewer menu disabled when run as root
The most serious one by far was #1: the taskbar at top and the launcher
icons at left are completely off the screen when using the "free" driver
(I have an ATI 5770 videocard). You can barely use the system.
Installing the 'restricted' driver from ATI, then rebooting, fixed it.
#9 is kind of worrisome. It suggests the formatting (done with gparted
during install) skips over some .log files.

The Start menu, reportedly, is coming back but it has a mini-tiles view. I
have seen different variations on this, but this is a common claim:
<http://goo.gl/u8iBDK>. Better than what they have now, but still a bit
insane. I bet - or at least hope - there is an easy way to get normal menus
back.

Seems rampant in the open source world.

The KDE team has fallen down on the job of looking at the bugs I reported:
<http://goo.gl/C9zs3h>
Most are still in the "unconfirmed" state - many still unassigned... is
anyone even paying attention to the bugs?

This way you know that all drivers are compatible.

This way you know that all drivers are compatible. I actually have a spare copy of Windows 7 which I purchased for my wife for her old laptop so I can use that. I also have Windows 7 Ultimate which Microsoft gifted me after I beta-tested their product though it is currently installed on my father-in-law's computer. However, I'm not too worried about the drivers. If any of them don't work, it'll be the ATI ones and I can easily just venture over to laptopvideo2go.com and get modified ones. -- Silver Slimer Wikipedia & OpenMedia Supporter

It suggests the formatting (done with gparted during > install) skips over some .log files. There has to be another explanation. gparted is a good tool : tried an tested. You dont just "leave certain files". The only thing I can think of is that you replugged something and confused the device IDs or simply got mixed up (as we all so) as to what was where. There has to be another explanation to a repartitioning "leaving certain files". It aint gonna happen if that file was on a reformatted newly defined partition. -- "I have a BSEE....
