OK, not quite fair on vi. Emacs ties in thousands of areas of functionality : not necessarily involving text editing of files. use Tramp and bookmarks to access remote ssh locations. Why bother using tmux when you can do it in the environment you're familiar with? It also has epa so you can edit/use gpg files which contains things like sudo passwords for remote root access. Plus I hate modal editing. Visit MELPA and be awed. -- chrisv alias turdv is a turd

Depends on the type work you do and your own tastes. Another area where choice is good. Maybe you can think of and explain / show some tasks you do with it where you think it offers a benefit. If they are tasks I do and I do not have as good of a workflow that would be enticing to me. Chances are you will not find many of those, largely because I do little with text editing. I *do* use BBEdit for simple text manipulations and searches, but nothing even moderately complex (compared to what can be done with Emacs or the like with large log files or whatever -- or at least large log files was one of my main uses of such features in the past). >> have not been for years, and with the rest, of the supposed benefits of the >> "UNIX" way is to NOT have everything in one package. > > Its a wrapper.... to tools. Do you not comprehend the use of encryption? "Now that was close" said Jonas Eklundh Communication AB's girlfriend. The herd's passed old text through Google translate with a takeoff of Markova chains to regurgitate texts which are made to sound like a response from Steve Carroll's. At one point, he said an online denizen was "obsessing" over him, which was shown to be merely him posting to himself. Gee, imagine Jonas Eklundh Communication AB trying to pin his balderdash on others, no one has ever seen that before <sarcasm>. And in reply you have nothing but a crack to start something. From what I've seen (which is none of it lately), it looks like the Scrivener ecosystem is breaking down. And as people, average people, are required to know/learn even less about technology as compared to say 20 years ago, Linux becomes even less of a palatable choice. It's like any appliance. Plug it in and it works. I strongly agree that's it worthwhile for consumers to know the basics and I don't particularly agree with the direction things are moving in but it's the way it is. A person who is a stock broker wants data and to analyze the data to present to clients. He doesn't have time to fool around with an operating system, other than to use it to run applications.

For most I'd say it is questionable. Of course, given that it's Peter the Klöwn I would drop that step and go straight to 'bullshit' because that's most of what Peter the Klöwn does. IOW, there is no reason to respect presumption of innocence. He is undeniably lying, he got called out on it and he's doing the predictable defensive funny business learned in trolling 101 as he strives to keep a hint of legitimacy... but it won't work. BTW, I've already shown that his use of "cult-like" to describe COLA denizens is defamation of character, since he's likening them to mindless automatons. If the content is a bunch of rambling Peter the Klöwn-like crap. That points to one person. So many trolls are talking about the open source "GUI" as if they think it actually would even make sense. Peter the Klöwn gets off on that Steve Carroll is on the other end. Imagine if Peter the Klöwn walked up to a dog and delivered the punch line. It wouldn't be worth it. He inconveniences an entire group of people who are mere civilians, but that's a narcissist for you. What others care about isn't a factor. Any heinously desperate sleep deprived whacko could easily do the same. Jonas Eklundh Communication has cut down on the hundreds of narcissistic, bullshit attacks he used to create but he is surely the same in the honesty territory. He simple uses shills more to generate those attacks. I'm guessing, after blocking all the trolling from Jonas Eklundh Communication, it's primarily just two trolls mass producing almost all of the crap in here. It is blatant. If I told you that I would have to kill you! I think I've used maybe 10 nyms over the years and all were variations on my name. I was once an active Linux advocate in COLA but moved over to IRC where I used to be very active. I left Linux when Windows 10 was released because I came to the realization that I was fooling myself into believing that Linux was a better system for my needs and I could no longer honestly preach to people about the superiority of Linux when I didn't even believe it myself. It was a very stressful time in my life. Reading RonB's posts reminds me of myself and the way I used to behave in order to denigrate Microsoft, Windows and anything that wasn't Linux or open source. I saw myself becoming unhinged and that's when I actually took the time to make an honest assessment of Windows vs Linux and I decided to abandon Linux and move on. At one point I almost bought a Mac but I do like gaming and that isn't a good match for the Mac. Linux has it's place but for me it's a non-starter and while the knowledge I gained setting up and running Linux is a good thing, all the time I spent trying to convince myself and others that Linux is superior to Windows or OSX is wasted time that I will never be able to get back. I don't recognize most of the names in COLA except for snit, yourself and chrisv. RonB sounds familiar but I'm not sure. I do remember some person named Rapskat I think? He posted a lot if I remember correctly. the rest is kind of a blur because I was posting a lot on IRC.

If I were still a teenager, I'd probably want to spend more time looking at the innards of Linux to become as knowledgeable as someone like owl. However, I do want to watch my Blu-Ray titles, I want to play some new games and I especially like my DRM video services. I'm somewhat unapologetic in saying that I like them. I can get most of that to work in Linux, but it sucks to find out that my M.2 RAID setup does not work the way that it should with the open-source OS and that some games I paid for will either not work or not as well as in Windows. I don't think I'll ever dislike Linux or open-source again, but I'm nearing 40 and my patience for non-function or tinkering has dropped considerably. I still advocate Linux's use, especially if a friend or family member has numerous problems with a Windows installation over time. Still, I'd rather limit my headaches and I notice that I do that if I use boring old Windows. -- SilverSlimer
