Actually knowing something about the subject... That's another matter.

Especially when you are quoting a pile of crap you probably don't understand.

Speaking of quoting a pile of crap, your article basically has you
admitting that you're an idiot. Good job.

Something we have known for 15 years, at least.
Jeb is a green screen junkie who evidently never leaves his basement
because he has absolutely no clue what people in the real world have
to say.

When he was posting as jedi, I used to think he was a bot of some
sort because he has a very obtuse way of thinking/writing.

The worst part for me was that I was being nice to him for a while
before he decided to just call me names. It looks like there's no reason
to be nice to a lot of the people here.

Jeb doesn't like it when his errors are pointed out and sometimes he
reacts that way. He really isn't one of the bad ones though. At least
in IMHO. He's just misguided and way behind in technology.

It would be nice if he noticed that I was being nice to him. I would
have continued to be so had he not just snapped the way he did.

He's usually civil.
And he does take a lot of abuse :)

I would love to see evidence of that. I have never sunk to your level and
you remain hateful toward me merely because I noted an NRA video remains
unrefuted.

As I keep telling you, I am happy to give you another chance to be
reasonable. You say you are open to such things. Excellent!

He deserves it:

"sudo is not a 'Linux' thing... it isn't even a 'Unix thing'"

"you couldn't GIVE me a Corvette for free (or any other American car
   for that matter)."

"Windows 8 Metro is pretty much an Ubuntu Unity clone."

"GUI's tend to have no memory and thus are error prone"

JED is mighty confused most of the time.

> Might have had a bad day?

JED has definitely gotten meaner over the last few months than he was
last year.

We broke him down!

My favorites were his insistence you needed to use Apple branded drives and
protocols to do backups on OS X. And something about *printing* being an
edge case... but I would have to look up the details on the latter.

Whenever GUIs are mentioned is when we see Jed at his most clueless. He
seems to have no idea what they are why and how they are designed. He
seems to think the power of the underlying tools are suddenly lost as
opposed to harnessed into a context sensitive harness to make their use
a lot easier. He truly is an idiot.

Even with you being a jerk to me I will not sink to your level. You could do
the same - be better than others and do not use them as an excuse to act
poorly.

Mine is probably bigger and newer than yours in all respects.

You have a very warped and outdated view of what a Unix user is.

If anything, we're the early adopters.

If so, it comes from you low-end bozos here on cola: RonG with his $120
Mint crapbox, Walrus 7 with his £20 computers off eBay, rapskat with his
$50 Linux system, the constant talk about how well Linux runs on
dumpster-level hardware... it's depressing.

> If anything, we're the early adopters.

LMAO! You're so full of shit. If that were so, the boutique builders
(Digital Storm, Maingear, Falcon NW, Origin) would be offering
high-power *nix systems; none of them do as far as I know.

What are you going to do with an nVidia GTX 780 on your Unix box? You
gonna giggle mightily over a crappy Blender video where a penguin beats
up on a Windows avatar?

Why would you need to overclock and liquid cool your Unix box?

What will you do with the Razer Naga mouse?

I read computer mags. The Linux mags barely ever talk about hardware.
I've never once seen a videocard comparison done in a Linux mag. And
MaximumPC rarely, rarely gets a letter from a *nix user.

Overwhelmingly, Windows users have driven the PC hardware market for 20+
years.

At home, for me, it's a different story....

Fuck the Razer Naga, the Logitech g600 rules.
http://Jeff-Relf.Me/g600.JPG
http://Jeff-Relf.Me/g600.TXT

And you ( DFS ) didn't even mention monitors.
Mine is a 4K/UHD, IPS, 185 dpi
on a nVidia Quadro K600, DisplayPort.

DirectX 11.1, on Windows 8,
in mindblowingly -fast- !

http://Jeff-Relf.Me/DirectX.CPP
Visual C++ 2013, is a small (one-file) example of how to:
-- Use DirectX 11.1, Direct2D 1.1, DirectWrite, and Direct3D.
-- Replace DirectDraw/GDI+, etc.
-- Draw to a back buffer at a high fps (frames per second).
-- Draw properly scaled/smoothed .JPG files, hardware accelerated.
-- Draw to/from/within bitmaps.
-- Discover if a font exists or not ("FindFamilyName()").
-- Discover if a glyph exists in a font ("HasCharacter()").
-- Discover the width/height of a glyph ("GlyphWH()").

Note: This code needs Windows 8 or later.

Message-ID<Jeff-Relf.Me@May.14{22.15.Seattle.2014}>
In reply to#243773
@Silver·Slimer, I know nothing about OpenGL.

Windows 8's UI uses DirectX 11.1, big time;
so you must allow for multiple back buffers.
And, to do that, you need a good graphics card.

Also, Mozilla FireFox/Thunderbird uses DirectX;
so, likely, OpenGL is -not- the way to go.
Besides, Linux/Unix never had the best graphics.

DirectX 11.1 has improved support for
hardware accelerated decoding -- "WindowsCodecs.H",
.JPG, h264 ( .MP4, .MKV ), etc.

DirectX 11.1, on Windows 8, is faster because,
for the first time ever, it has integerated
Direct3D, Direct2D, hard/soft·ware decoders,
and DirectWrite into one nice, integrated package.
