#471360 — Fix Idiot File Names

SubjectFix Idiot File Names
Message-ID<ppkgs001e31@news3.newsguy.com>
In the world of professional computing GNU/Linux rules hands down.

But in the world of idiots Microshit Winblows is lord and master,
and the GNU/Linux user very often has to deal with the various
outrageous concoctions produced by these idiots and their idiotic
OS.

One such outrageous concoction is the M$ filename, which
usually includes lots of spaces, punctuation marks, and other
characters (even quote characters!) that SHOULD NEVER be in
a filename.

To automatically clean up these outrageous file names
I routinely use sanity.pl:

https://github.com/splitbrain/sanity

There is also detox:

https://github.com/dharple/detox

But detox needs a lot of configuration whereas sanity.pl
just does the job without configuration.

Very rarely, to the point of almost never, do you find a Windows file
with spaces or non-alphanumeric characters in the name.

A few Windows directories have spaces in the name.

Linux filenames, on the other hand, very often have dashes in the names.
Just view the 'list of files' in any package in Debian for proof.

Yet the lame GuhNoo/Linux tape and bubble gum OS, and all filesystems
running thereon, allows them anyway.

In fact, you illiterate dweeb, Linux/ext4 allows allows MORE bullshit
characters in the filenames than does Windows/NTFS.

Feeb is a fucking idiot.txt is much easier to type than
Feeb_is_a_fucking_idiot.txt.

Don't you agree?

I'm not talking about M$ system files, you raging moron. I am
referring to the hideous butchery that is committed by the idiot
M$ USERS. Download anything from YouTube and you'll see what
I mean, although the problem is not at all limited to YouTube.

Unfortunately, you lack of reading comprehension is NOT rare.

Dashes are acceptable. That is called the "kebob case," and is something
that you would know if you were a COMPETENT computer user.

See also "camel case" and "snake case."

It doesn't matter if they are allowed. Any professional and competent
user will NOT use them. For one thing, without some form of adornment
(i.e. quote chars or escaping) all software will reject them unconditionally.

Filenames are no different form any other programming identifier
and in all pro languages there are strict rules on how to construct
them. Spaces, punctuation, and other special characters are NOT
to be permitted.

Any competent programmer will construct filenames in the same way
and it therefore a sure sign of INCOMPETENCE to see those ridiculous
M$ filenames

Filenames with spaces and other junk characters are annoying, confusing,
ugly to look at, and the classic sign of an M$ idiot.

Not if you map a key on your keyboard to the "_" character
to avoid a key-shift.

But the use of a filename with spaces will ALWAYS require
it to be surrounded by quote characters or ALWAYS necessitate
escaping the space chars -- and satisfying those conditions will
ALWAYS be harder to type.

Any command terminal will puke on a filename with spaces or
other junk characters.

Although M$ did decide to call it "Program Files", when "Programs"
would have been better.

He's also a freedom-hater, and thinks that "allowing" things can be
bad.

For example, the dumb fsck acted like it was some sort of tragedy that
giving the same name to different virtual desktops is not prevented.

Why one fscking line of code should be written, to prevent the user
from doing something that he wants to do, like this, I cannot
understand.

Which is "easier" to type isn't really the issue, anyway.

It's "easier" to top-post, also, but that doesn't make it a good idea.

How about "ProgramFiles?"

This may appear to be camel case but it is not. For some idiotic
reason, M$ does not distinguish upper and lower case.

For example, on Linux, having two files with the names "aFile" and
"AFile" would be perfectly valid, but transferring those files
to a Microshit system would TOTALLY FAIL.

What junk is Microshit!

Linux file systems allow all sorts of crazy chars, but they
are NEVER used by anyone. I have only seem them used for
exceptional cases such as debugging output or other exceptional
situations, e.g. $100file, $101file…"

>

Even Microshit MUST disallow such file names for terminal
and software processing. From a programming point of view, file
names with spaces or other nutty chars are ABSOLUTELY ILLEGITIMATE.

Using the spaces serves the PERSON better, and the computer is there to
serve the person, NOT the other way around.

One guy reported him years ago. As expected, it did naught to derail the fool.

Can UTF-8 characters be concatenated into a string with a logical connection to the "real" world; that is the question posed recently by those astonished at the non-stop flood of gibberish from trolls and Cheetos smelling losers.

The content clearly is a bunch of randomized bullshit. Only glue sniffing would lead to that.

The guy is as loved as pork pie in a mosque -- and with good cause.

Why would you want to restrict all commands on open source tools to what can be done on Windows? What does it take to end this?

But chrisv feels the need to attack the cult-like herd of convenient friends.

What are you whining about now, moron?

Case-sensitivity has been discussed here many times. The "trolls" cc
and Carroll both support/ed it.

Case-sensitivity for file names makes sense, to be honest. Even *I* am
for it. I DO see a difference between Jobs.odt (a text about Steve Jobs)
and jobs.odt (a report about job creation) though I think it would take
some getting used to for people accustomed to DOS and its successors.
After all, there was no distinction there between A.txt and a.txt.

Frankly I do not really have any hope. I will defeat Arch Linux with my thoughts.

Only what the Script-Troller wants matters to the Script-Troller. There is nothing Troll Killer Snit can do to change that. It's a medical issue and it is what it is.

Yup. Sadly this is what we have to face. Cretins who clearly have no reason for being here other than to upset me. My view: Even if a person was just learning just for fun, the notion that earning expertise as being one of having "not anything" to show for it doesn't make sense because you will plainly have the insight to show for it and know-how is beyond the Script-Troller. Times change. Could be the concept of a usenet group is getting outdated. Linus Torvalds is a false advocate's only reason for living.

idiocy.

You can't understand because you're a bleepin' idiot. Lots of lines of
code are written to prevent users from doing things they might want to
do, that could be harmful to their or others' systems.

Of course. Makes sense. You dont give the "user" the big red "detonate"
button.

Any inconsolable desperate insomniac could easily do the same. Marketing is a wonderful thing and consumer herd mentality is even better. No no hell no. Klaus 'Super Troll' Schadenfreude never agreed to stop accusing good people of being like him. He lied about his trolling of course.

Poor trolls. I'm much too smart for them.

Watch them now baselessly (but fully-proven by snittish "logic") claim
that I'm actually reading all their garbage, thus making me a "liar".

Right, -highhorse? *How* could I be so good at anticipating troll
responses? Could it be 20 fscking years of usenet experience? Could
it be that I'm simply better than you?

The content clearly is a bunch of delusional baby sh*t. We know there are only a few people who do that.

Jesus Christ can't get anything else to work, either.

Protected code is being built into Wayland. Generally, I would not call a comment like Jesus Christ's comments a fantasy until you refute it (as you are here) and Jesus Christ responds with the same thing again ignoring what you said.

Klaus Schadenfreude and the advocates imply searching for a price comparison for a Linux application is instigating.

The Flying Spaghetti Monster can take pleasure in the silence in the packed shit hole of my trash can. You installed and took it for a test drive and your "diagnostic abilities" lead you to that conclusion, so what?

It's a spam message. The Flying Spaghetti Monster has already decided what he is going to say before he calls. What you say does not matter. What Sandman says is irrelevant. The Flying Spaghetti Monster doesn't have any concept of what he is blubbering about. I bet The Flying Spaghetti Monster thinks your life was fun.

"You'll notice how quickly he loses interest when everything is about him. He clearly wants the attention"
Steve Carroll, making the dumbest comment ever uttered.
