You're picking at straws there. Peter was talking shit about X cut and
paste as that wasnt the point since each WM/DE combo does it best
*sometimes* to alter that. However we are not talking about that :
rather the "X11 tyoe consoles" and other such apps - Relf is taking shit
again.

You're joking, right?

You generally dont have "X11 type apps". X11 sits way down and no one programs to
those primitives,

Why don't you ever quote anyone? Nobody reading your stuff has any idea
who the hell you're talking to and what the hell you're referring to.
Just quoting would make it a lot easier for us to communicate with you.

When you quote too much, I dump the post, unread.

If you're new to the (sub)thread, and lost,
check the parent post, like I do.

All I can tell you is that a lot of people get upset when people use
newsreaders such as Windows Live Mail because it quotes at the bottom.
Even though it makes it easier for people to read (because the most
important content is at the top), it's upsetting because you often don't
know what the person is quoting. Therefore, the quotes themselves seem
to be important.

In your case, you not only don't quote but you also change the subject
header. For people who prefer to read posts by date rather than by
thread, it makes it hard to follow you.

You could do what I do, when a subject gets changed as Jeff does, with
no quoting, I just assume he really doesn't want to be part of the
conversation and just ignore him.

Trying to talk sense to Relf, eh, "Slimer"?

How many billions of dollars does Apple have? And they still can't get a
significant chunk of the desktop monopoly. Microsoft inherited their
monopoly from IBM and they kept it with ruthless (and illegal) attacks
against their competitors. Unfortunately for Microsoft, their desktop
monopoly is becoming much less significant.

Again, agreed. I was willing to give the corporation the benefit of the
doubt even though I had every reason to believe they were spying on all
Windows and Hotmail users in addition to ADMITTING it last month.
However, the moment they decided to try and make me believe that my
hardware was incompatible... with my hardware and refused to allow me to
install the OS I paid for on the computer which required it because a
simple HD was changed, I knew that they had crossed a line which should
never be crossed. It's all Ubuntu for me from now on and I have no
reason to prevent myself from donating to it and other GNU/Linux
projects like I did for two years in the past going forward.

You keep threatening to move to Linux... you sound like you've been
talking to yourself in the mirror:

"It's all Ubuntu from here on out! (smack yourself in the head)...
Windows is garbage (slap yourself hard)... Microsoft has gotten my last
dollar! (punch the mirror and shatter it)...

heh!

But it'll be just like that story you told about the PlayStation and SSX
game: some blowout Windows game will come along and you'll boot it right
back up.

Can't fool us... don't fool yourself.

On my laptop, the move has already been made. I'm only waiting to finish
out the remaining games which are exclusive to Windows before moving my
desktop to Ubuntu as well.

It's possible, and had I still been 22 there is a possibility that I'd
be swayed that easily. I'm 35 now though and I can easily say no to
games nowadays.

When are they going to port X.BAT. from the Cyber 170?

Good luck with that.

Depending on the xfce theme in use, I can barely read the tabs on my
Excel 2003 sheets when they're opened in LibreOffice.

Linux has some cool things going, but office software isn't one of them.

Didn't you say you had like 100 games in your Steam acct? I don't see
'Just Say No To Games' in your future.

By comparison, I have 5: Alice Madness Returns, Half-Life 2, Portal,
Portal2, and RAGE (weird - I bought RAGE at BestBuy and installed it
via discs - wonder how it got registered in Steam?)

Was looking at Linux img mgmt software just now, and an ad for
preordering 'Wolfenstein The New Order' popped up.

I got Mass Effect 2 for PC real cheap ($4.99 or $9.99) at BestBuy. I

I've seen this a zillion times before and the end result is always
the same. Silver Slimer will return to Windows at some point because
of the quality of the applications.

The freedom aspect of Linux is a noble one but it doesn't last.

Personally, I'm tired of spending a lot of money for DAW applications
and plugins. And I'm really sick and tired of the registration/DRM
aspect of it.
The pirates click on setup.exe and it's installed.
I have to visit web sites, download installers that basically ask for
my first born and so forth.

I would love to use FOSS but for DAW work it's a porker.
I paid for Harrison MixBus (Professional Ardour if you will) and it's
a great program but it's no ProTools or Cubase or even Studio One or
Reaper or Sonar.

LibraOffice is decent but it's slow, buggy and seems to have a habit
of changing the colors in my spreadsheets.

Amarok is good on paper. In practice it's a buggy, bloated mess.

And on and on it goes.

That's entirely possible. I have a habit of changing my mind when it
comes to the OS. If Ubuntu does something unforgivable, Windows is
coming right back on I have to admit.

I guess it's OK if your needs are minimal as mine are. I generally only
need something which is just slightly better than a text editor.

> Amarok is good on paper. In practice it's a buggy, bloated mess.

Agreed, but it has excellent features which only Banshee can emulate.
The most important for me is the fact that it saves ratings to files.
Banshee only does so with MP3 but Amarok seems to do so with M4A as well.

I've done it dozens of times over the years.
And it's always the applications that make me leave Linux.

Same here, but it can't seem to get things correct.
I have no macros or anything complex like that.

Try Clementine.
Seemed pretty good to me last time I used it under LinuxMint.

Well, I can't help but notice that the latest version of Rhythmbox has
support for encoding music into Opus. I've been looking forward to this
for a while and have heard that Opus is the best sounding lossy codec
out there. I'm curious to hear how good it sounds and it's cool to see
that GNU/Linux supports it way before Windows ever will.

I'm sure that the LibreOffice guys did everything that they could to
make it work right but the fact that the format isn't truly open didn't
allow them to implement it properly. I wouldn't be surprised to discover
that the documents end up looking awful in LibreOffice not because they
developers implemented it badly but rather because Microsoft Office
didn't follow its own guidelines.

If I'm not mistaken, it's a Qt application. I have no interest in
anything coming in from the KDE side of things.
