Thus, in C, being close to the machine, everything must be either an integer or a floating point, or arrays/structs thereof. But there are some abstractions. In C, a traditional ASCII character is uint8_t, or unsigned 8-bit integer, which is the ordinary char type. ASCII, however, is long dead and C must now account for Unicode wide chars and thus has wchar_t, a variable type, and the fixed char16_t and char32_t types. Wide chars are handled differently: wchar_t *p = L"A Unicode String"; Note the "L" prefix. Since I don't do much Unicode processing, I don't know the size of wchar_t, but UTF-8 has variable length characters and I would suppose that the wide char functions account for this. I need to check later.

How Steven Petruzzellis figures out when to use his annoying flood script for maximum impact http://usenet.sandman.net/misc/snit_flood. But when the stats were run, it turns out beyond any doubt, Steven Petruzzellis was far more "neurotic" than he admitted. Who doesn't know that this kind of bilge is Steven Petruzzellis's approach, not the modus operandi of Klaus Schadenfreude? It's all just projection... the endless posting, the posting with Klaus Schadenfreude's name, the writing of nonsense, the tantrums... the false bravado and eagerness to show how flustered he is over being banned from the schoolyard for pooping in it again... On GNU/Linux, the size of wchar_t is 32 bits, and this allows GNU/Linux to handle the ENTIRE Unicode ISO-10646 standard. Of course, all string functions have wide char equivalents with the only difference being that string arguments are *wchar_t. This leads to incompatibility with Microshit Winblows which expresses wide chars, I believe, as 16-bits. (I should check but I don't give a fuck about that junk M$). I need to tune my brain with wide-char mode because that is the future. ASCII, or the ISO-8859-X, days are gone forever. For some reason, I had thought that GNU/Linux wide chars were of variable length to match the UTF-8 representation. After all, on GNU/Linux, a Unicode text file contains variable length chars. AFAIK, all GNU/Linux text utilities, such as grep and pcre, are converted to wide chars.

Computer control, via software, of any external device requires sending the proper digital signals over the proper interface. Today, the interface is usually USB but there are others, including RS-232, the "old fashioned" serial ports and still others like the antiquated parallel port. There are also PCI "plug-in" cards that provide I/O chips for control purposes. But if you want to do anything, the detailed specs are mandatory, or else forget it. So contact your DA-7 dealer and ask for the technical specs. You'll likely be greeted with the usual blank stares and gaping mouths of total technical idiots.

Until Jeremy offers up his 'top-of-the-line' Windows solution for appraisal, there is no challenge, just wild assertions. If Klaus Schadenfreude has 'b.pdf' open in an application such as emacs and Jeremy wants to change its name to 'linux.txt' via a proxy icon while porting a program, Klaus Schadenfreude's suggestion might be handy. Unfortunately there are too many "slow is good enough" freetards and not enough old school users with a clue enough to help the people with old computers. Heck, just recently he was declaring himself the only "true Linux advocate", and claiming that "advocates" (in irony-quotes, who he also refers to as "the herd") are trying to rewrite Zsh shell from scratch. -- Live on Kickstarter! http://www.5z8.info/titstitstitstits_j7t4bl_stalin Jonas Eklundh Communication

Calls it "obsessing" over him, even though he proceeds to provoke that exact criterium. What is the group coming to when a Klaus Schadenfreude troll can not get any attention... Now Jonas Eklundh on the other end of the game doesn't matter. All that matters is Klaus Schadenfreude gets to deliver the punchline. So how to win? Don't respond to the moron. Reason isn't part of game and never was. Honestly, what lie? BTW, I've already proved that his use of "herd" to describe COLA denizens is libel, since he's likening them to farmed livestock. -- E-commerce Simplified http://www.5z8.info/php-start_GPS_tracking-user_f8h9lv_-OPEN-WEBCAM---START-RECORD-- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4xD43Khhkw Jonas Eklundh Communication

And utf8 IS a variable length encoding... so no the "wide chars" are not of variable length, rather the encodings for different chars are of variable length. -- chrisv alias turdv is a turd

It would be perfectly possible to write a C function that processed variable-length characters like UTF-8. Such a function is called "stateful" as opposed to "stateless." It is possible. YOU could not do it, but a more competent programmer could easily do it.
