#471208 — What is this BASH Code Doing?

SubjectWhat is this BASH Code Doing?
Message-ID<6dd66e7f-85b3-45a6-bfbd-0c039ddd6a0d@googlegroups.com>
I want to install Foxit Reader on my Linux system but I will NEVER
allow the commercial installer to run on my machine.

An answer may be the ArchLinux bash script that is found here:

https://pastebin.com/kjGhqpxu

But I am not sure what this bash code is doing:

_file="FoxitReader.enu.setup.${pkgver}(${_foxitrevision}).x64.run"
LANG=C grep --only-matching --byte-offset --binary \
  --text $'7z\xBC\xAF\x27\x1C' "${_file}" | cut -f1 -d: |
while read _position
do
 dd if="${_file}" \
 bs=1M iflag=skip_bytes status=none skip=${_position} \
 of="${pkgname}-installer/bin-${_position}.7z"
done

It seems that this code takes the commercial installer, whose name
is in _file, and then greps the file for certain file positions within,
and then pipes those positions to _position, and then loops over
all positions using dd to extract the bytes to separate output
files in the directory ${pkgname}-installer.

Is this correct? If so then how does the dd loop know where each
file ends? Only the start, in _position, is given.

Then, later, the bash code decompresses all the extracted file:

cd "${pkgname}-installer"
install -m 755 -d "${srcdir}/${pkgname}-build"
for _file in *.7z
do
7z -bd -bb0 -y x -o"${srcdir}/${pkgname}-build" ${_file} 1>/dev/null 2>&1 || true
done

These files are presumably the contents of the Foxit Reader package.

Any insight into this code would be greatly appreciated.

So he changed his story to Sandman responding to him. Everyone is Klaus Schadenfreude -- the oldest gag in the book. It was Klaus Schadenfreude who flooded Sandman's site millions of times and denied it. Turns out Klaus Schadenfreude's persistent referencing of Sandman met his own definition of trolling, so he pretended he never said that. Klaus Schadenfreude is a pinhead... advocates have plonked his flooding. What he really should use is a script that keeps switching names, then the auto-posts have a chance at being one quarter as annoying as he is. On topic discussions will not be seen once the druggies overindulge. That, and there will repeatedly be a butthurt insomniac or two in an open news group. The specifics of the bullshit aside, we've all seen who regularly gets angry when he does not get a response. Oh goodness, that is just tons of hooey.

The 7z\xBC\xAF\x27\x1C is just the 7z file magic. It looks like
it's looking it's looking for that magic, and stripping any bytes
that might precede it. When I create a 7z file, and run the grep
part of this code, without the cut pipe, it always results in:
0:7z'
If I put four bytes before the magic, it gives:
4:7z'

So, dd is just jumping to the start of the 7z magic before it
writes.

I don't know why why the magic would be in a different
place than the start of the file (maybe for obfuscation?).

It seems that the Foxit installer binary contains a sequence
of 7z compressed files.

The grep determines the positions of all those files
and then passes that info to the dd loop which then
extracts those files.

I don't have time today to try this on the actual
Foxit installer binary but maybe tomorrow I will.

The teller of untruths does it every time. Then the torrent begins. Because the milquetoast just has to run to other groups to get the attention he's not getting here.

Currently there are too many "all choice is good" Linux users and not enough old school users with the patience to help the people with old computers. Snit Glasser failed to give a case study of a successful company that has made its position by not caring about its clients and services.

How is Chrome on Linux doing anything above the lowest common denominator? Chris Ahlstrom created at least 20 KVMS in the last year or so. Without Linux that would not be possible. Chris Ahlstrom gave back what he gets from Flatfish as much as he deserves, big deal. Flatfish is being a yowling bitch about it?

Cinnamon is clearly my second favorite DE and the only one I suggest to Windows newbies. Primary interface is Plasma, though. Useful keyboard shortcuts is all you want after Klaus Schadenfreude messes things up.

And you do realize that it isn't impossible for Klaus Schadenfreude to be doing this, or in collusion with someone doing the deed? Seriously, those of you who troll are not able to manage Tmux anymore.

Virtually everything Steve Carroll says about anyone else is false of course, but he does not care. That is the problem today and newer instructors don't understand why older people are better; people from older generations (~60 or so) *should* know better than to fall for liberalism. Get a record check on Steve Carroll and you will get proof that he was in prison earlier this year. The investigation sites can not go into that extent of specificity and public reports apparently have to be court ordered. Michael Glasser Snit created at least 20 KVMS in the last year or so. I am sure he and the cult-like herd of convenient friends are proud. How is FileZilla on Linux doing anything above the lowest common denominator? Steve Carroll doesn't have any idea what he is babbling about. It was Steve Carroll who flooded Michael Glasser Snit's site dozens of times and pretended he did not do it.

Nearly all people in this group do customizations either as a necessity or as a trade, so I doubt Sandman thinks of automation to be "witch craft".

Just look at your posts and look at Sandman's, there is nothing for Sandman to learn from an idiot like chrisv. But hey, let him keep making an idiot of himself. It is not like anyone believes him. Now why the added need to recode into WebAssembly via email in a super computer system? Predictably, he didn't list this as part of his self-serving 'specification' <eyeroll>. Over and over, the surface request is he wants to "talk tech", but the guy spends most of his time whining about "obsession".

I'd answer chrisv directly but he is an imbecile who takes things out of context to effect his thirst to call everyone a shill.

Hooray! Using this bash code, I was able to extract all
the files from the FoxitReader installer -- without having
to run the installer. It's NEVER a god idea to allow some
foreign COMMERCIAL software to take control of ones system.

Foxitreader is not a bad program -- but then it uses
a lot of FOSS software.

However, I found that FR uses these two directories
for its configuration files and, unlike, traditional
Unix software, it does not inform the user:

~/.local/share/Foxit Software

~/.config/Foxit Software

Note the spaces in the file names. What idiocy!

A program is always supposed to document EXACTLY where
all its files are located. But the commercial packages
that are transplanted from Microshit, as well as bloated
Linux DE software, will fail in this obligation.

At least, unlike on Microshit, there is no Linux "registry"
to pollute with all sorts of scattered junk.

Other than The Script-Troller, who can not figure out what I am doing? Rambling cretin. Oh goodness, that is just tons of tripe.

That's Gnome.

Gnome is NOT Linux. Gnome is only one of many, many choices.

True... and here's a reality I'm sure you'll hate... Ubuntu Gnome is
used by a lot of people who began using Linux for web dev; for many
of these users, Gnome is what they envision when they think about
Linux.

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! That's a hot one!

The idea of "reality" and "web developers" do not mesh.

Web developers are like acid-heads or mental patients.
They inhabit their own lunatic world of idiotic illusions.

All developers are, to one limit or another, web-developers now.

I thought showing Steve Carroll some kindness might help the situation. It did not. Why does Steve Carroll focus on his own pride so much?

Both Snit and Steve Carroll had their snafus and their pickles. But one played it off and didn't do anything too outrageous that could not be presented as stage magic.

My stance: Even if he was just learning for the sake of learning, the notion that obtaining expertise as being one of having "nothing" to show for it doesn't make any sense because you'll by definition have the know-how to show for it and wisdom is a powerful thing. Being an open format as it is, low-level programming will never go away but it'll never be a big hit.

Steve Carroll has yet to show how his moral code does anything above the lowest common denominator on Linux.

It was the Script Troller who stated that he and his work friends used to hack school computers all the time and it was an amusement of his.

Asking the Script Troller to stop flooding, a thing I didn't do, is different than denoting his duplicity. My bottom line was that good people arrive here *to* battle trolls. It is not as if we all do not know what this forum is, Klaus Schadenfreude included.

Are you being stupid on purpose?

Oh goodness, that is just tons of malarky. Only what the Script Troller wants matters to the Script Troller. There is nothing you or I can do to change that. It's a mental health problem and it is what it is. Klaus Schadenfreude will not be seen once the waters are overfished. That and there will regularly be a temper tantrum or two in an open usenet group (hint: the Script Troller). The comedy of errors aside, we have all seen who frequently gets enraged when he doesn't get his way. the Script Troller doesn't know if there is a free open sores program to handle such tasks.

He is an imbecile -- advocates have auto-read his puppets/shills. What he really can not make is a script that keeps switching names, then the auto-posts have a shot at being almost as replied to as he is.
