So why don't "most people" send Windows packing when it screws up on them
*multiple* times? When Window's vulnerabilities and mistakes *trash* their
computers?

The answer is, "most people" don't know they have very viable alternatives,
and many of them who might know are afraid of the viable alternatives.

All you need is one good Linux friend, and you have nothing to fear from
your Linux computer.

I have shown the utter disaster that you get when you use desktop Linux. So
far nobody has shown where I am significantly wrong (TomB has said, and I
accept, that some of the mouse problems are VM related).

Why not show similar problems with Windows and OS X. Oh, because they are
simply made better. Not that they are perfect - far from it - but they are
not that much of a disaster.

Look at the videos I link to below. Linux is *not* a viable alternative for
most users and use-cases. It is for some.

For example, this is what the menu looks like in gedit 3.10.4 on my
Linux system.

http://bayimg.com/EANoeAaFo

Reinstalled it (gedit 3.10.4-2 from Arch, via the Manjaro repos) and it
looks the same.

Sometimes you just have to make allowances for the hobbyware. Or move
on to the next editor.

As predicted, the Linux Loons are swarming the nest in order to
defend their slopware.

Of course the fact that Canonical admits this is a serious bug
doesn't mean anything when such "power users" as Dumb Willy Poaster
haven't ever had a problem with Grub.

If they actually spent any time in the Linux help forums they would
know that problems with grub are at or near the top of the list. They
would also realize how foolish they look with their "works for me,
must be you" tactics.

When Wideload Porkster speaks (in-between taking a bite out of
something) and says that GNU/Linux is perfect in every way, you can be
sure that it's an accurate statement. GNU/Linux is as functional as
Wideload Porkster is healthy.

How exactly have I demonstrated ignorance about GNU/Linux, pray tell? I
need everything that a regular desktop user would need to know. I
understand the repository system, I am quite well-versed in the package
managers of the aforementioned distributions, I know where to get help
for any issues I might face, I can fix the sleep/wake issues I faced, I
understand the philosophies behind GNU having read all of Stallman's
essays and his books, translated for GNOME and installed packages which
weren't in any of the repositories. What do you consider to be ESSENTIAL
for a GNU/Linux USER so as to not be considered "ignorant" as you
suggest? Should I be programming? Should I be running a home server
(which any idiot can manage to do)? Should I run a web site filled with
lies about how good GNU/Linux is to advocate the operating system?

What exactly do you want?

Why? I know how to use many competing tools:

* OS X, Windows, Linux. I use all but mostly use OS X.
* iWork, MS Office, LibreOffice (and others). I mostly use the first two.

I also know multiple email clients, multiple FTP clients, multiple text
editors, multiple image editors, multiple web browsers, multiple video
players, multiple video editors, multiple screencasting tools, multiple IM
clients, and on and on and one. I do not often use each and every one of
them.

So what you're suggesting is that knowing how to use GNU/Linux
automatically removes my ability to spot a lack of quality and feel any
anger at the fact than an operating system eradicated my data?

How about Mint? The *recommended* way to update is to start from scratch.

That is insane.

Odd that OpenSuse update on 12.3 made linux unbootable. I've updated it
for almost a year, and then it finally happened... CRASH!!!!

Friend, it is absolutely IMPOSSIBLE that ANYTHING within GNU/Linux
crashed. Suggesting otherwise makes you a heathen and can be punished

Yep.

It has to be one of (at least) 3 things:

1. You are using the wrong distribution.
2. You are incompetent.
3. Works for me, must be you.

Funny. This is the same list you provide me when MS OS 8.1 crashes as
it often does.

Now to check out MS Fixit and do assorted bits of hobby tinkering on
Redmond's latest near monopoly-ware.

LOL! You didn't see any shakespeare yet have you?

It's BECAUSE I actually respected the first answer that I tried
different distributions. I was quite content with Ubuntu and its effort
to keep the whole system free but people kept suggesting that Fedora was
faster or Debian was more respectful of the freedom aspect and Sabayon
was more bleeding-edge and Arch was more this and more that. I ended up
with Debian before I finally gave up on GNU/Linux. If the users
themselves can't figure out what to use, how could I?

One one hand they claim this is great "choice", but on the other they use it
to insist the user is *always* at fault for picking the wrong distro ...
though they also insist they are all really about the same and should be
counted as such on usage stats - and they fail to see why users would not
want to jump from distro to distro trying to find one that actually serves
them well. If you are not willing to find a tool that serves you half as
well as OS X or Windows than you must be a "sheep" who is not willing to
thing for yourself.

Amazing to watch.
