#481662 — How to Make a Patch

Contributing to the mighty FOSS movement often means supplying
a source code patch. Here is how to make a patch file:

diff -urB old-source new-source > file.patch

That's it! Just create and modify a copy of the source code,
which can be a directory tree or a single file, and then run
the above command.

Warning! Don't try this with Microshit Winblows. You'll
have to validate your debit card several times over at the
Microshit store -- and that assumes that you can even find
the source!

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

Hail Linux!

Hail GNU and the FSF!

Hail Stallman!

Fuck Microshit and all the craven degenerates who support it!

You seem to be confusing the OS and the tools we use on it to develop
SW. ALl the best diff tools exist on windows too and and many of the
better ones ONLY on Windows. But you know that.Or should know that.

"diff" is a VERY SIMPLE algorithm ( WinMerge uses it );
Google "Longest Common Subsequence Example".

It's recursive, but you don't program it that way,
to avoid stack overflows ( and slowness );
instead, you create a lookup table.

Mine looks like this ( red for old, green for new ):

I keep copies of my source code going back to August 2007.

Why would MS let an idiot like you submit a patch to their awesome kernel?

C:\Windows\System32\ntoskrnl.exe

In fact, why would MS let ANY degenerate FOSS idiots touch ANY of their
sublime products? They wouldn't, and they won't, and as a result they
build superior products and generate revenue in excess of $110 billion
per year.

Here's how great they are: for the last fiscal year, Microsoft's
engineers each generated approx $1.83M in revenue.

Revenue: $110.36B
Employees: 134944 (44.7% Engineering)

GuhNoo/Linux/FOSS can't compete in revenue generating (because of that
stupid GPL) or in the quality of their products. Which is curious when
you think about it; since anyone in the world can contribute to FOSS
products, there's a mammoth developer base and you would expect it to be
the best overall. But it's not; FOSS software continues to be the
world's worst.

Turns out software development is hard work, and people want to be paid
for hard work, and FOSS doesn't usually pay.

It's too bad that they can't even manage to build a superior
web browser. They decided to completely trash Edge and steal,
or borrow, the Chromium engine.

Of course, we'll never know just how bad their kernel is
because they are afraid to publish the source.

If they did publish their kernel source, programmers around
the world would be laughing (or puking) for months.

So what?

I'm talking about making a patch with diff.

Git is an entirely different story.
