It is interesting how the small number of individuals that have
wandered away from the herd have come under attack. They are accused
of being a cult. Their choice is ridiculed as being inferior because,
you know, if it was so good, why have so few left the herd?
Amazingly, they are even accused of "herd like" behavior because they
tend to share values which have caused them to leave the *real* herd!

A similar attack is building in AOLU, though not nearly as far along as the
trashing of COLA.

Yea, but the Linux loons.
People like marti, greycloud, philo and others who left the Linux
cult were immediately attacked by you loons.

And in the case of marti, when he came back to the fold the attacks
stopped.

Many have left the Linux cult.
That's why it remains a flat 1 to 2 percent of the market.

Ever see all of those numbers posted by Canonical and so forth when a
new version of Linux is released?

So where are all these people?

I'll tell you where they are. They are back running Windows a week
after they try Linux.
Same story everywhere.

Only by you Linux losers.

I wonder if Chris AssStorm would suddenly find me to be reasonable and
friendly if I decided to run Ubuntu again. I'll be in the market for a
powerful laptop next year and hell, maybe I'll get a System76 one just
to gain a +1 from the guy.

It's actually funny because people run into problems with GNU/Linux
within the hour they installed it for the first time. Yes, all of the
applications they would technically ever need are pre-installed but they
generally don't work the way people would expect them to from what I've
seen. In my case, I actually like the set of applications GNU/Linux
distributions commonly come with and think they work great in addition
to being lightweight. However, I tend to be a lot more open-minded to
change than typical folks.

He, as well as the other Linux loons will automatically conclude you
are trolling to set them up. It's the old "try Linux, love
Linux,ditch Linux" tactic.

They are hyper paranoid around COLA.

The bugs become apparent very soon after the noob installs Linux.
Also things like lack of decent help systems hurts.
Then there is the lack of full portable gadget support.

The bottom line is that users used to Windows or OSX will find Linux
and it's applications to be crude and to not be superior to Windows
or OSX applications so the reason to switch goes away.
Along with Linux BTW.

The worst part is that I was, for a year and a half, a much more
hardcore GNU/Linux advocate than anyone else. For one, I always refer to
the operating system by its proper name of GNU/Linux. I also refused to
use ANY proprietary software whether it was on my own or on work
computers. In fact, all of my media was also encoded in free formats
such as FLAC, Ogg Vorbis and Theora. In the case of Theora, my videos
CLEARLY looked worse than ANY video in the x.264 format but I didn't
care... Theora was freedom. So they can call me a sock, a troll or
whatever the hell they want but the reality is that I can be one hell of
an ally if they stop behaving like little kids.

You have to go into GNU/Linux with a good understanding of the
philosophy of free software to enjoy it. If you know that a community of
unpaid labourers is what is mostly behind the operating system, you can
overlook certain problems. If you go into it expecting a true competitor
to something like Windows or OS X, you'll be disappointed. That's why I
think that GNU/Linux should exist ONLY in completely free form. No
proprietary software whatsoever, not even for drivers. Of course, that
move will make the system unusable for many configurations. However, it
will make the system's state acceptable to anyone using it and encourage
people to improve faulty software on their own by taking up programming
rather than waiting for a third-party to fix the software like Windows
users do. A fully-free GNU/Linux wouldn't even come close to being
better than either proprietary system, but it would ETHICALLY be better
than both by miles. Chances are that it would also encourage more people
to use it in general (more than 2% anyway) AND force media companies to
release their codecs openly rather than in closed form.

Why on earth would you think that? There ARE 100% Free versions. Use
that. For others that want their HW to work a mix and match is fine.

How will it make the "state acceptable"? Makes zero sense.

Huh? You can do that with mix and match SW too.

A well configured Linux system is easily on a par with Windows for many
uses - but audio visual and gaming certainly not.

It wouldnt "force" anything of the kind. Windows as 90% and more and the
companies dont release their closed source. Why would they give their
work away for Linux freetards to steal and their competitors to analyse?

He values freedom so much he thinks people should not freely use this
software as it is licensed? Um, yeah, there is a flaw with his thinking.

It is somehow more "acceptable" for everyone for it to work less well.
Another flaw with his reasoning.

For some limited uses it is as good - and some programming uses and other
niches. For most uses it is still far behind the competition.

Exactly. He is still accepting the cult-like teachings of Stallman. He is a
follower.

I know it's fine. However, if I had total control, I would make
everything entirely free just as Richard Stallman advocates. If everyone
were forced to use free software and ONLY free software, the problems
within GNU/Linux would be more apparent to the users (especially on the
graphics side) and its users would be more willing to help in the
improvement of the software and the drivers. So long as proprietary
software exists for the GPU and things like Flash, the users won't see
the need to improve the ATI/NVIDIA drivers and Gnash until the companies
behind those drivers decide to pull the plug and leave the users
stranded. Imagine if NVIDIA and ATI both decided to abandon all
proprietary drivers and Flash videos all suddenly used features
exclusive to versions 13 and up. Would Flash 11.2's age and the fact
that that new GeForce GTX 990 doesn't have drivers for it be noticed by
the community?

People would overlook the problems because they would know that regular
people were behind the software, not necessarily professionals. Pay
attention.

That's not what I'm arguing at all.

Because many of those companies already have and still managed to profit
despite the fact that their technology is freely available.

Do you not see the irony of that thought? I mean... if you had total
control... about freedom. LOL! Yeah, that is just brilliant!

too. Personally I prefer choice.

It is *still* not acceptable to force people to use inferior solutions.

And many profit based on using a different license. Or, like Apple, a mix of
open and closed source licenses.

Choice is good.

I think Linus Torvalds enjoys his work and he shuns the word "Free".

This is true, at least of desktop Linux.

It would be accepting the cult-like views of Stallman. I disagree with
those, as do Linus Torvalds, Jim Zemlin, Mark Shuttleworth, and many others
who value open source software.
