I admit I'm actually amazed but it seems that they've *finally* reached this point (it took years!).

This is why I've marked my posts dealing with his circus acts as OT (or anything that wasn't related to Linux), so people had the choice to filter it via at least one other method (along with my email address).

GNU/Linux deserves a USENET group which isn't constantly disrupted by
stupidity. It's just too bad that they will only get it long after
USENET has died.

There are more every day. I think that the only people Snatch the
Clown's garbage could possibly appeal to are masochists.

Yea.
Right now USENET's only real purpose is for those interested in
downloading pirated software and illegal music. And only because
USENET is still very slightly below the radar of the RIAA, publishers
and so forth.
Once that ends, USENET will be gone.

Yes, your claims of my using socks is funny. Pathetic and sad, but funny.

It is also quite telling - you cannot actually find *me* doing wrong so you
make up stories about me. In other words, you know - or at least fear - I am
generally right. And that pisses you off.

Oh well.

I actually returned to USENET (I was around briefly in 2005 and in the
90's) because I wanted to be able to discuss with people WITHOUT there
being a load of graphics loading in the background. As it is, USENET is
the only place other than IRC and e-mail where constant background
transfers aren't going on. No matter how fast my Internet connection
gets (I'm at 50Mbit right now), I'll never get used to the idea that
communication is impossible without ads, images and other distractions.

I don't think that we are. While I was a teenager, while Windows 95 was
coming out and essentially showing the world that the future of
computing lay in GUI and that the whole of the Internet was going to be
accessible through a web browser, I ALREADY longed for a return to the
protocols I had first used on the net. I wanted a shell Internet
connection, one which forced me to use the CLI with Lynx, Pine and
gopher simply because it was fast rather than a PPP dial-up connection
which allowed me to use graphical utilities. Granted, much of it had to
do with the fact that dial-up connections didn't allow for anything
other than text to be transferred quickly.

Either way, even with a powerful computer as what I use today and a
50Mbit connection, using the mouse and keyboard simply doesn't feel as
"right" as a keyboard alone. You feel a greater deal of control if
everything the system allows to be executed can be from a CLI with a
keyboard. It provides for an awful web experience, but it provides for a
much greater INFORMATIONAL experience. You learn a lot more and use much
more of your brain when you're not being distracted by images and video.

Windows 95 came out about a decade after Apple had already put out Mac OS,
which was the first OS to use the GUI to show the full file system, to use
menus as we use them today, to use double-click, to have a trash can, to
have keyboard short cuts for menu items, to include drag and drop, which
allowed direct editing of documents with mouse manipulation, which had
self-redrawing GUI windows, etc. The idea that Windows 95 showed the future
of computing seems an odd thing to say in light of this.:)

In 1995, though, Usenet and Gopher, and other older protocols were still
quite common. What ones are you thinking of?

That I could understand - though I was spoiled because I was at a University
with a fast connection.

I would love to see support for the idea that you use more of your brain
when dealing with just text.

You are not hard to filter, though. :)

Then again, it is not as if you are the only one spewing silly lies. That is
the norm in COLA. You are just currently one of the more amusing ones. :)
