Yes, choice is good... but it is a shame that no distro of desktop Linux, with all the choices available, has been able to get even 1/2 of 1% of users to switch to it. Look at the download numbers. If desktop Linux was a compelling product it would have millions of people using it and promoting it to others. Word of mouth would be powerful and strong. Desktop PCs still outsell Macs roughly 20 to 1 so your OS choice isn't much better. In fact, were it not for the iDevices, OSX would probably be closer to Linux' numbers.

Carroll is (as usual) leaving his brain behind to troll me. He is ignoring:
Desktop Linux is free.
Macs cost about 2.5x what a Windows system does on average.
Desktop Linux can run on almost any hardware.
OS X is supported on the hardware of one OEM.
Desktop Linux has a cult-like group pushing a "philosophy".
OS X has a lot of people who respect its ease of use.
Desktop Linux has been promoted by Dell, HP, Walmart, and more.
OS X is promoted by one company.
Desktop Linux can be migrated to on "Windows" hardware.
OS X can be migrated to only if you buy a new system [1].
Desktop Linux can be had in many, many forms (distros).
OS X comes in only one "distro".
Add to that, Carroll is assuming iOS is why OS X has the share it does, but
then does not follow that to the logical conclusion that Android, with its
*higher* user base, should have an even bigger benefit to desktop Linux and
Chrome OS.

I'm fully aware of this, Lloyd... as I indicted here earlier today: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!original/comp.os.linux.advocacy/dC-h-bW3mns/MEjaoREL7loJ I'm also fully aware that OSX "fails to compete" as relative to the 800 lb. gorilla, not to the same degree but not that far off. > So yes, windows pcs outsell everyone by large > > numbers including Macs, but yet Apple is able to build a huge > > corporation that has profits and sales most others just have wet dreams > > about. > > > > Linux? Nope, not so much at all. None of which detracts one bit from my rightfully pointing out the fact I did to the context Snit laid out. As to his subsequent, ridiculous Android proposal, any idiot knows the tight integration Apple has with their phones doesn't apply to Linux/Android to nearly the same degree... nuf said... except to point out that Snit is not just any idiot ;)

Well, duh! Mostly not marketed to consumers. There were some feeble attempts to do so years ago. Why were the attempts so feeble? http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Windows/Microsoft-States-Debate-Remedies/ Microsoft, States Debate Remedies By Darryl K. Taft | Posted 2002-03-18 Kuney continued to bang the drum over Microsofts alleged pressure on OEMs by introducing a summer 2000 memo from Microsofts former OEM chieftain Joachim Kempin to Gates. "Im thinking of hitting the OEMs harder than in the past with anti-Linux. ... They should do a delicate dance," Kempin said in the note. Those who did not dance to Microsofts tune would be hit with restricted source code deliveries, Kuney told the courtroom. If they installed any other OS, or even any *browser* other than IE, M$ would with hold their Windoze OS from the manufacturer. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/14653.stm M$ even tried to stop vendors selling PCs without an OS installed, on the flimsy excuse of it was "a necessary sanction to discourage piracy", but which would *also* discourage anyone installing a linux distro. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/01/20/microsoft_gets_green_light/ In short, M$ did their level best to ensure that GNU/Linux was NOT marketed to consumers. -- "Microsoft has vast resources, literally billions of dollars in cash, or liquid assets reserves. Microsoft is an incredibly successful empire built on the premise of market dominance with low-quality goods." -- Former White House adviser Richard A. Clarke --
