OS/2 mostly failed because it required hardware which was either way too
expensive or simply not available to the consumer to operate reasonably
well. It was ahead of its time for sure, but mostly on a hardware level.
If you used the OS/2 which was available in 1992 on top-of-the-line
hardware from 1992, you couldn't help but come out incredibly disappointed.

I don't remember that being all that daunting, but then I can't
remember which machines I had it on back in the day. I'm sure they
were home brew systems and not top of the line hardware for the most
part.

GNU/Linux succeeds with knowledgeable people who get sufficiently
annoyed with Microsoft or Apple's monsters. By knowledgeable, I mean
people who are aware of the existence of alternatives such as BSD and
GNU/Linux. If you hate the way Microsoft or Apple historically conducted
themselves in the marketplace, you give it a chance. If you hate the way
they either spy or facilitate spying on the user, you stay onboard. If
you hate the way they take control of your machine and try to lead you
to believe that you're in control when the reality is that you aren't,
you become a true advocate.

Every one of my ventures onto the GNU/Linux side of things has been as a
result of an dissatisfaction with the system. Apple alienated me by
making me feel like a slave and Microsoft alienated me by making me feel
like I never truly owned anything. I'd go back to Windows from time to
time only to once again realize that as a user, I'm not truly respected
in the fashion that I believed that I should be. Why are the bundled
applications in Windows 8 showing me advertisements? Why is Windows
telling me that the battery which came with the computer is incompatible
with it? Why doesn't OS X allow me to open specific ports on the Airport
router? Why won't Windows allow me to update my GPU driver on the
laptop? Why does GNU/Linux allow me to do all of the above rather easily
without seeking payment of any kind?

Or if you just want to be a knowledgeable user. I give Linux chance after
chance - and hope it gets better... gets good enough to be usable and
something I can recommend. I have tried it with a number of users... as far
as I know *none* have stayed with it once they could afford something
better.

OK. I was going to say, Scheib gave a pretty good paint job for $99.95, at
least back in the day when they were all over television. I had one of my
cars painted when I lived in El Cajon and it turned out great.

I had an Earl Scheib shop in Kansas City do one for me. At the time it
was $49.95 and since I had done the get ready, the paint job was fine.
The problem with the el-cheapo paint jobs wasn't the paint they used or
the skill of the painter, it was in the get ready. Most of them used
liquid sandpaper which is basically a lick and a promise and takes the
wax and shine off the old paint. Most of the time that isn't enough.

Is El Cajon near Cajon pass? Never been there. The only thing I
remember was a rail road accident coming down the pass wiping out a
small community down near the bottom.

It's in the East County area of San Diego. It gets its name ("The big box" in
English) due to the fact it's in a valley encircled by mountains. Cajon Pass
is northwest of San Bernadino.

It's *bad logic* to conclude *anything* from just the one fact of

If there were something 'compellingly different' about Linux on the
desktop, more than 2% of the market would be using it. Simple logic,
no lieing involved, and certainly more correct than your postings as
usual.

I again note that since Linux is so much better, why don't you use it?

Market share is just one indicator, in this case a pretty good one.

You really are a wanker turd.

Compelling reasons make people change. linux doesnt have that for MOST
desktop users. Including yourself and Creepy Chris Ahlstrom for example.

it does for me because the gnu/linux infrastructure is much better for
the work I'm currently doing.

You really need flushing.

It is great for some use cases... but for most it is a non-starter.

Of note: you failed to mention one redeeming quality of desktop Linux.

My theory is that chrisv is a reverse troll whose purpose is to make
Linux and Linux advocates look foolish.

He is certainly doing a great job of it.

Additionally, he adds nothing positive to Linux advocacy.
Chris Ahlstrom likes him though.
Most ignore him.

Ahlstrom doesn't like him. There is nothing to like. But Creepy Chris
will suck to anything with a pulse if he's allowed to giggle and use big
words in his attempt to impress. What a weenie.
