There could be plenty of people buying those homes who can't afford to
pay cash for them.  They would not qualify as "wealthy."

That's you making shit up.  Like how the wealthy are taking advantage
of all these "mortgage interest" tax breaks.  Those are designed to help
the *middle class*, not the wealthy.
