I vaguely remember compiling kernels after going through the whole ./ configure process but that was a couple of decades ago when you wound up compiling a lot of tarballs. I've had to build a program in the last few months but I can't remember what it was. In any case it wasn't a deal where you started the make and went out to mow the lawn, hoping it would have successfully completed when you got back.
