%INT. HOSPITAL CELL -- DAY
\intslug[day]{hospital cell}

ALLEN HAMON, 40S, in hospital gown, gaunt, eyes open too
wide, one hand handcuffed to a steel-framed hospital bed,
stares directly at ...

DR. JAYMON, 50s, immaculate suit and tie, who is sitting
with his legs crossed, a notebook in one hand and a pencil
and a can of pop in the other. He sips from the can, then
sets it down on the floor.

\begin{dialogue}{DR JAYMON}
          So machines ... hate you?

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          No.

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{DR JAYMON}
          You said they don't like you
          anymore.

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          No. You weren't listening. Your
          type NEVER listen.
                      \end{dialogue}
Dr. Jaymon scribbles in his notepad, then looks up. He
pastes on a bland smile as he stares intently at Allen.

\begin{dialogue}{DR JAYMON}
          Our "type?"

                      \end{dialogue}
Allen rolls his eyes.

\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          Know it all clueless nitwits, who
          can NEVER hear what someone else
          actually says.

\end{dialogue}
The pencil lead breaks. The bland smile vanishes. Dr. Jaymon
clenches the soda can and it bends slightly.

\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          Do you mind not hurting him?
\end{dialogue}

\begin{dialogue}{DR JAYMON}
          Him?

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          The can.

Dr. Jaymon sets the can down.

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{DR JAYMON}
          So, Mr. Hamon, what did you
          "actually" say?

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          I said machines aren't my friends
          anymore. They used to watch out for
          me.

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{DR JAYMON}
          You think machines ... are alive?

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          No.
                      \end{dialogue}

A few moments of silence.

\begin{dialogue}{DR JAYMON}
          Then how could they "watch out" for
          you?

                      \end{dialogue}
Allen sighs.

\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          Do you really want to know?

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{DR JAYMON}
          That is why I'm here.

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          Then put down the pad and pencil
          and listen this time.

                      \end{dialogue}
Dr Jaymon uncrosses his legs.

\begin{dialogue}{DR JAYMON}
          But...

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          No "buts."

                      \end{dialogue}
Dr. Jaymon sets the pad down on the floor beside the can of
Diet Pepsi.

\begin{dialogue}{DR JAYMON}
          I'm listening.

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          Machines used to help me. Because I
          knew them so well--

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{DR JAYMON}
          --But you said--
                      \end{dialogue}

Allen shakes his head.

\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          --Ah, ah, ah ...
\end{dialogue}

After a moment he continues.

\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          Machines used to help me because I
          knew them so well. Their makeup.
          Their metals. Metals ... Do you
          understand now, Doctor?

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{DR JAYMON}
          No.

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          All metals are living entities.
          Gold, silver, mercury, copper, tin,
          aluminum -- the whole lot.

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{DR JAYMON}
          Metals--

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          --Living and breathing.
                      \end{dialogue}

Dr. Jaymon is not buying it.

\begin{dialogue}{DR JAYMON}
          So ... are computers evil?

Allen rolls his eyes.

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          Are you crazy? Do you really
          believe computers are alive, that
          they can actually think? I thought
          you were an educated man.

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{DR JAYMON}
          But you--

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          --Metal, not machines, not
          computers, not waffles, not
          mushrooms, not clouds -- metals.
          Concentrate, doctor, this is not
          rocket science.

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{DR JAYMON}
          No need to be--

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          --Condescending? True ...true. I'm
          a bit strapped for time -- if
          you'll pardon the pun.

                      \end{dialogue}
Silence.

Allen yanks at his handcuffs for emphasis.

\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          Get it?

                      \end{dialogue}
Dr. Jaymon pastes on the bland smile again.

\begin{dialogue}{DR JAYMON}
          So, these metals--

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          --Are mostly good. Some tend to
          bend more easily to the will of
          Evil One than others. You might say
          some are more malleable than
          others. Just like us, I suppose.

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{DR JAYMON}
          Good and evil ... metals?

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          Mostly good. At least they used to
          be. I used to get along really well
          with them -- and the machines that
          obeyed them. All except for one ...

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{DR JAYMON}
          One metal, the "evil" one?

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          I won't say its name here.
                      \end{dialogue}

Silence.

\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          Have you ever heard tin scream,
          Doctor?

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{DR JAYMON}
          Mumm...

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          It's horrible.
                      \end{dialogue}

Dr. Jaymon picks up the soda can, drains it, crumplesit
and lets it drop to the floor with a clang.

Allen goes livid.

\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          What - the - HELL - are - you -
          doing - ass - HOLE?

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{DR JAYMON}
          I, uh... mumm...

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          You fvcking mouthbreathing son of a
          bitch!
%                (pause)
\paren{pause}
          Bring it to me. Bring - it - to -
          me - NOW!
                      \end{dialogue}

Dr. Jaymon jumps up, grabs the can and drops it into Allen's
hands.

Allen instantly calms.

\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          It's okay. He'll be fine.
                      \end{dialogue}

He cuddles the can and draws it near his face, whispering to
it.

\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          Shhh ... shhhh, little one.

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{DR JAYMON}
          So which metal is the evil--

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          --Not now, Doctor.
                      \end{dialogue}

The can uncrumples -- at first slowly, then it suddenly pops
back into perfect shape.

\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          There, there, little one. There,
          there.
                      \end{dialogue}

Now Dr. Jaymon's eyes are wide.

\begin{dialogue}{DR JAYMON}
          How the hell--

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          --Hush, doctor, he has something to
          say, but he's a little shy.
                      \end{dialogue}

Allen maneuvers the can nearer to his ear. After a moment he
stares, wide-eyed at Dr. Jaymon.

Dr. Jaymon instinctively backs away.

\begin{dialogue}{DR JAYMON}
          What?

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          You are the unwilling servant of
          the Evil One.

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{DR JAYMON}
          I ... no ...

                      \end{dialogue}
\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          You have a pen, hidden in you
          pocket ... what kind of plating?
                      \end{dialogue}

Dr. Jaymon reaches into his suit.

\begin{dialogue}{DR JAYMON}
          It's not "hidden" it's a ... the
          plating is cobalt--
                      \end{dialogue}

The can jumps out of Allen's hands and rolls to the opposite
wall where it continues banging into it.

\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN}
          Leave it. Leave it in your pocket,
          for the love of ...
                      \end{dialogue}

The pen is free. It falls out of Dr. Jaymon's hands and rolls
quickly along the floor.

The handcuffs that hold Allen to the bed snap open, the bars
in the window bend and break creating a way out.

Allen leaps for the window just as the pen stabs at the
wall.

\begin{dialogue}{ALLEN} (O.S.)
          Run doctor! Run! It KNOWS you know.
                      \end{dialogue}

But Dr. Jaymon lies in a pool of blood, a neatly drilled
hole through his skull.
