It has *as an option* what I assumed would be standard: don't process javascript. I turned off javascript and got an immediate speed increase. I fiddled with various options to GNU parallel and now have it processing 58 files in 102 seconds. (Not sure why it's 58 now instead of 59) There is also an additional option to the conversion utility to not bring down images, so with no images it jumps to 58 files in 49 seconds. All of this is without digging into my own code for improvements, and surely there will be some there. The formatted page without images is actually nice. But I would think a photo of the food would be desired. Have you gotten yours to get all 58(59?) recipes yet?
