Can't play FLAC or OGG. That is pretty fucking lame, and goddamned
outright fucking NAZI behavior.

You being blind to it is only a tell about you and your exceptional
stupidity level if you think that kind of thing is okie dokie.

ios devices can easily play both formats, not that it matters since
they're both niche formats and not at all common.

the vast majority of music is mp3 or aac and if it's properly encoded,
it's indistinguishable from the original, especially when played on a
mobile device.

far more than you and mp3/aac is not 'quite lossy'.

people might think they can hear a difference, but in double blind
tests, listeners consistently *cant* tell which is which.

that means it's indistinguishable.

Tell that to people wanting to hear strings or piano.

You can hear differences even at very high sampling rates then

No need to prove over and over again that you are a dimwitted lying imbecile

what's to tell? people can't hear the difference. they might think they
can but they can't.

> You can hear differences even at very high sampling rates then

the sampling rate only needs to be high enough to reproduce the highest
frequency you can hear, which for humans is 20k, and that's for someone
with good hearing. it drops as people age and for older people, they
may not be able to hear even 15k.

cds are sampled at 44.1khz, which means a cd can reproduce up to 22.05
khz, which is higher than what people can hear.

once again, in double-blind tests, people consistently can't tell the
difference between a properly encoded mp3/aac (i.e., not 128k) and an
original cd.

It is much more complex than that.

And your idiotic remarks about CDs are stupid beyond imagination.
CDs are not "lossy" the way MP3 is. You seem to have absolutely no idea
about the way MP3 works. It has *absolutly* nothing to do with "highest
frequency" like the sampling rate for CDs does

My favorite is hearing an <scrreeeech scraaaaaatch> on an MP3. Obviously
recorded on an old billy box. Example:

   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbOHlKzlqCA

Gershon Kingsley - Rhapsody in Blue - From "Switched-On Gershwin" 1970

Note the comments about the glitches. No, they are not part of the original
recording, which I enjoyed in college.

of course it is more complex. nobody said otherwise.

however, the complexity doesn't matter to listeners.

what matters is whether people can tell the difference, and they can't.
this has been tested time and time again with a wide variety of
listeners.

people *think* they can, but the reality is that in a double-blind
test, they do no better than chance. they are guessing.

i never said cd was lossy and i know quite well how mp3 works.

you're the one who brought up sampling rate. not me.

What listerners here are very audible differences depending on type of
music.
In your preferred "music for imbeciles" it is not important, you would not
hear any difference at a bitrate of 10k

String instruments and instruments like piano or harpsichord have even at
bitrates of 320 KBits audible losses

Then call it "bitrate". It still has absolutely nothing to do with highest
frequency.

'hear' and they can't tell the difference in multiple double-blind
tests.

the only way there would be a 'very audible difference' is if you did a
shitty job of encoding the mp3/aac. the problem is not that it's
mp3/aac, but that it's poorly done.

a properly encoded mp3/aac is indistinguishable from the original. if
there was a difference, then people would be able to tell which is
which in tests, and they consistently fail to do that.

not audible they don't.

on a scope you might see a difference but it's not anything you can
hear.

again, there have been numerous double-blind tests and people
consistently do no better than chance.

bitrate is not the same as sampling rate.

you don't understand this anywhere near as much as you think you do.

Let's put some links in here......

---------------------------------------------------------
http://www.music.mcgill.ca/~hockman/documents/Pras_presentation2009.pdf

Summary, 256kbps MP3 and 320kbps MP3 indistinguishable from CD audio in
an engineered sound studio using musician and engineers....although I was
surprised that this study seemed to suggest that it was pop and metal
rock that seemed to have more of a difference than orchestra and opera.
---------------------------------------------------------
Or this one linked to by slashdot.

http://www.trustedreviews.com/opinions/sounds-good-to-me
--------------------------------------------------------------

Now, I don't doubt that *some* may be able to *actually* hear a
difference, but that is, IMO, a fractional percentage.

Of course, if there's really any chance of hearing the difference at the
higher bitrates, it has to be audiophile gear, with all devices having
very high SNR's, using optical connections to reduce EMF noise pickup on
any cables, and very high quality monitor speakers, some near-field
stuff. Once the sound is bouncing, that in itself affects it.

I'm guessing the people that claim they can hear the difference are the
same ones that bought into the whole "Monster" speaker cable thing....of
course, which has been also defeated by many double-blind tests vs
inexpensive 'Radio Shack' grade speaker cable.

Approaching 50, my hearing has rolled off quite a bit. Back in highschool,
I remember working on old school-owned TV sets with leaky horizontal
oscillators @ 16+Khz that I could easily hear. Being honest, I haven't
had me hearing tested with actual calibrated hearing test equipment, but
at work I test RF gear for frequency response, and once the test tone
goes above 5Khz, the level I hear degrades quickly. This could be the
cheap crappy speakers in the test equipment however.

Just to clarify, as I know you were responding to someone
else when you said that, but, I will try *not* to destroy
my iPad file system while it's mounted on my Linux PC.

Being old, I've destroyed far too many "things" by
removing something that was needed.

Heck. In the "olden days", I would go through heroics
to have no files in the root directory of Windows (I
gave up) simply because files don't belong in the
root directory of any computer system.

I even tried relocating windows programs by
global search and replaces in the Windows registry
(before it became a hive), again, giving up in
eventual failure.

And, having learned UNIX on Sun workstations without
benefit of training, I can also say that I've had
my share of destroying things simply by deleting a
seemingly innocuous file or moving a directory
one level over.

What I'd like to know, for my iPad currently mounted
on my Linux filesystem, is WHAT files are particularly
dangerous to mess with?

I presume, as nospam suggested, that the Linux
libimobiledevice driver is mounting my iPad at a
safe and convenient point, which is not root perhaps,
but which is below root (presumably to limit damage).

All I want access to, really, are the photo, video,
audio, and screenshot files on the iPad.

I presume deleting them from Linux (once copied over)
would be dangerous, so I'd delete them from the iPad.

depends what you do.

adding files isn't likely to matter because the ipad won't know they're
there and they'll basically be ignored.

deleting (or modifying) something it does want to use, like one of the
database files, could cause problems.

The *Video* app is what should handle MP4s, M4v, MOV etc. it does on my iPad.
iMovie is for creating and editing videos, and VLC should be able to
open any of them.

The *Camera roll* is going to store any videos shot with the *Camera*
app or any of the video recorder apps.

OK. Thanks. Do you mean "Videos" or "Video"?
I have "Videos" but not "Video":

I'll assume you meant Videos, but, if not, let me know.

When I bring up Videos, even though the "Camera Roll" has
videos taken with the iPad in it, the "Videos" app pops up
a dark blue screen with lighter-blue writing saying only:
 No Content
You can download videos from the iTunes Store.

You can see this message in the middle of three messages
in the screenshot below:
http://oi57.tinypic.com/2ynner8.jpg
1. The first message is from VLC: Empty Media Library
2. The second is from Videos: No Content
3. The third is from iMovie: Tap + to start a new movie or trailer

Going back to the "Videos" program, I try to get it to seek out
the videos which were clearly taken by the "Camera" app on the
iPad; but, there is no button *anywhere*. It just gives a blank
blue screen saying "No Content".

Yup! *Videos*.

That is if you want to buy or rent movies/videos.
On a Mac, or Windows PC (& I know your OS is Linux) you can move
suitably converted movies.videos to iTunes (the desktop version) and
load them to you iPad when connected via USB. ...or everything you have
acquired via iTunes is accessible via iCloud. iTunes purchases are not
charged against your free 5GN of iCloud space.

Well you haven't added any content free, paid for, or other wise.

If I rip a movie from a DVD I have a VIDEO_TS folder usually from
5-8GB. I then run it through Handbrake to convert it to an iPad
optimized M4v in the range of 700MB-1.5GB. That is then dropped into
iTunes and can be transfered to the iPad.
...or I put it in a Pogoplug, Box, or Dropbox folder and use that to
import to the iPad or I watch the movie/video using the viewer built
into whichever of those services I use. All provide pretty decent
playback.

iMovie is a production tool:

Any videos recorded with the *camera* app, or other video recorder app
such as *Videon* are going to be stored in the Camera Roll and are
accessed and played from there.

Ah, a light dawns. You're trying to use your iPad like you would a PC.
That won't work. It *isn't* a PC. It's a tablet. You'd have the same
situation with an Android tablet, though you would encounter different
problems. It's not a PC, either.

I bought my first Android device six months ago. It took just a few
minutes of playing to see that trying to make it into a PC, Linux or
otherwise, just wasn't going to work. But for some things, some of which
*could* indeed be doing serious work, they can be better.

My daily newspaper, for one example. No, I'm not saying reading the
paper is *serious* work for me, but then it is for some people. My local
paper used to home-deliver a paper copy every day, but a year ago they
went to three days a week, with a tiny version on the other days only
available on the newsstand. But they have an e-version available to
subscribers, through both a browser interface and tablet (both Android
and iOS) app. The tablet app is MUCH easier to work with, so much so
that I changed my subscription to Sunday-only, saving enough money in
the first year alone to almost pay for the tablet. (I kept the Sunday
paper edition to get the ad inserts, which are only available online
from the individual stores - and to have a supply of paper to start the
fire in my wood stove all winter.)

Reading e-books is another. I prefer paper books, but some older titles
are very hard to find, and when you do find them, expensive. E-books are
cheaper, with many of the older ones available for free. It feels a
little odd to read an e-book on a tablet at first, but you get used to
it. I find it a pain in the neck to read one on my desktop Linux PC, the
reason I resisted e-books until now.

Speaking of books, I'll now be able to take several outboard motor
repair manuals along with me on my week-long fishing trip this summer,
without needing a big, heavy box to do it. I have them in pdf form,
stored on my tablet's external SD card. Usually I don't need them
because my outboards, while rather old, have been reliable - but those
manuals have saved my vacation more than once. It'll be nice to have
them on the tablet, just in case. Another case where a desktop PC is
nearly useless.

All that stuff is just as easily done with an iPad, I'm sure. I can't
possibly see how it could be *easier* on an iPad, but hey, what do I
know of iPads?

Change your life? Maybe, if you let it, though probably not as much as
your benefactors think it will. But unless you stop trying to make it
into something it's not, it won't have a chance.
