I don't do binaries on Usenet, but I could - so I'll take a look at that newsgroup so that I can obtain them directly onto the mobile device. I would think I can also torrent them directly quite easily onto my mobile device, although I've never looked for audio-book torrents so I'm just assuming they exist. > There are all sorts of things to be found there from history(Civil War, > WWI, WWII), to good/great novels, scifi, etc. You might have to dig > through some crap to find something which matches your taste. I think also the local library must do audio books since they have their very own branded mobile app that they keep trying to push on us. I go to the library almost every day, so, I'll ask them later on today as I am going on a hike so when I get back, I'll head to the library. Thanks for the well-intentioned advice.

I have never used a text-to-speech app for reading books (my Android branded phone has a text-to-speech hands'free option though). Do text-to-speech apps work reasonably well for large text books?

I prefer Kindle myself, but it likely wont appeal to you given that you do need to register so that it can keep track of where you are up to across all your devices so you can continue reading a particular book at the point you got to previously when you stopped, on a different device. In your situation it would be very handy to have one that is fully integrated with one of those fitness bands that can work out when you are asleep, so it can stop playing and keep track of where you got to before you dropped off. Technically difficult to do tho without sensors on your head etc so it may not be available yet. > Googling, I find Lifehacker says its a Google app: > http://lifehacker.com/5875516/the-best-ereader-for-android > So does Gizmo's: > http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/best-free-ebook-reader-android.htm > And Getstuff: > http://getandroidstuff.com/best-ebook-reader-android-top-5-free-apps-for-epub-and-pdf/ > I had googled for 'best free ebook reader' and only Android apps popped > up, > so, looking for iOS specifically I find: > Gizmo's says it's the "Kindle Q": > http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/best-free-ebook-reader-ios.htm > Do you concur? Don’t use it myself because I use the real kindle app on iOS and Android and Win. Its happy to use anything you torrent or download from one of the free sites like Gutenberg, but works best if you register and logon because that allows it to keep track of where you got up to in all your ebooks across all your devices that you ever read an ebook on.

Ah. Thanks. You know me well. There's no need to *register* to read an ebook, so, I agree, it doesn't appeal to me in the least. Registration is a MARKETING ploy. I downloaded from F-Droid the EPUB3 Reader from MIT, version 1.0. It says the EPUB format is the de-facto open format for free ebooks. It doesn't need a registration and it's free. It doesn't do anything though, because I don't have any ebooks. :) > Don┤ use it myself because I use the real kindle app on iOS and Android and > Win. > > Its happy to use anything you torrent or download from one of the free sites > like > Gutenberg, but works best if you register and logon because that allows it > to keep > track of where you got up to in all your ebooks across all your devices that > you > ever read an ebook on. I get along just fine without registering for, say, Google Maps or Youtube, so, I should get along fine if the free Kindle ebook app allows me to NOT register and if it reads all formats. I don't have Google Play installed, but F-Droid didn't have the Kindle app, so, I temporarily installed Google Play and made up a temporary one-time-only Google account name and then downloaded the Kindle app from Amazon Mobile LLC (package name = com.amazon.kindle). The app installed version 7.2.0.27 into /data/app/com.amazon.kindle-1.apk and the data directory it created was /data/data/com.amazon.kindle but, as you noted, it doesn't seem to work without requiring a registration. I couldn't skip past it, so I deleted both Kindle and Google Play.

OTOH it should work fine without registering if you arent getting the ebooks from amazon and don’t need to have it keep track of where you are up to in the ebooks you are reading across a variety of devices you have the ebooks read to you on. Since you go to sleep with the ebook reader still reading the ebook to you, you have to keep track of where you got up before you dropped off yourself anyway. > Registration is a MARKETING ploy. Nope, it is essential for keeping track of where you got up to in the ebooks you are reading across the devices you use to read ebooks on and to keep track of what FREE ebooks you have got from Amazon. > I downloaded from F-Droid the EPUB3 Reader from MIT, version 1.0. > It says the EPUB format is the de-facto open format for free ebooks. > It doesn't need a registration and it's free. Just as true of Kindle. > It doesn't do anything though, because I don't have any ebooks. :) Trivially fixable. Plenty are torrentable and on Gutenberg etc. >> Don't use it myself because I use the real >> kindle app on iOS and Android and Win. >> Its happy to use anything you torrent or download from >> one of the free sites like Gutenberg, but works best if you >> register and logon because that allows it to keep track of >> where you got up to in all your ebooks across all your >> devices that you ever read an ebook on. > I get along just fine without registering for, say, Google Maps or > Youtube, Sure, the main downside with not doing that with google maps is that it doesn’t allow you to have it remember your home location or offer you one of the places you have navigated to before so you only have to type a few letters to have it offer you the same place again the next time you need to navigate to there. With youtube you can't upload your own private videos. That is a quite useful way of allowing others to watch the videos you have produced without having to give them something physical like a USB stick etc, particularly if you are too stupid to ever use a cloud. And that's another thing bit of FUNCTIONALITY that iOS has that androids don’t. If you choose to email a video to someone, it offers to put it on their cloud and just have the link to that in the email. > so, I should get along fine if the free Kindle ebook app > allows me to NOT register and if it reads all formats. Doesn’t really need to be able to read all formats, its trivial to convert formats with Calibre which does run on linux and all the other major desktop OSs and is free. > I don't have Google Play installed, but F-Droid didn't have the Kindle > app, so, I temporarily installed Google Play and made up a temporary > one-time-only Google account name and then downloaded the Kindle > app from Amazon Mobile LLC (package name = com.amazon.kindle). Google Play Books will let you upload your own books and they do keep synced across all devices. However they say they remove any copyright violations. If true that may eliminate any stolen ebooks. (Course Google also requires registration.)

It wouldn't do anything unless/until I registered, which I didn't do (as I never register for anything other than email, and only then, because I have to no matter what MUA I use). I can easily understand why the Amazon LLC MARKETING team wants us to register, but there's nothing inherent in reading an ebook that requires registration just like there's nothing inherent in a flashlight app that requires access to my contact list. >> and don┤ need to have it keep track >> of where you are up to in the ebooks you are reading across >> a variety of devices you have the ebooks read to you on. > > Google Play Books will let you upload your own books and they do keep > synced across all devices. I think the freeware epub player from MIT should work just fine. I have to work on getting some books now as I read history and autobiographies all the time so, those are the types I will be looking out for. There are lots of those on amazon for free, but you do have to register to get those, just like you do with your library. Makes a lot more sense to get them from amazon than to get your library to get them for you from amazon. Either way there is a record of you having access to them so you might as well cut to the chase and get them directly from amazon yourself. > Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin > http://www.bookrix.com/_ebook-benjamin-franklin-autobiography-of-benjamin-franklin/ > Life and Public Services of John Quincy Adams > http://www.bookrix.com/_ebook-william-h-seward-life-and-public-services-of-john-quincy-adams/ > Theodore Roosevelt: An Autobiography > http://www.loyalbooks.com/book/t-roosevelt-autobiography Tons of that stuff available on amazon for free. > Being unfamiliar with ebook formats, is there a particular format > that is preferable or something to watch out for that a naive > person such as I am currently on this format should watch out for? Not really. The two main ones are pretty much of a muchness. Lot to be said for something better than plain text files, particularly with the sort of ebooks you are interested in where footnotes are common. The two main ebook formats handle those a lot more conveniently than a simple text file does. pdfs arent handled as well as the ebook reader's native format either. I prefer the kindle UI but like most UI stuff, that is very much personal preference stuff. Format wise its pretty academic because Calibre, which is free and runs on all the important desktop OSs will convert between them.

(BTW many libraries have free ebooks for loan.) It's actually pretty simple my not-registering algorithm. It's the same algorithm you probably use for not paying taxes. If there's no inherent need to register, and if a non-registration-requiring app exists and works, then you use the non-registration-requiring app. While I'm sure the flashlight-app marketing people would love for you to register, there's no reason a flashlight app requires registration, for example. Same with an ebook reader. If it's functionality that exists sans registration, than that is a plus for whatever tool provides that service (just as it's a minus for any tool that requires it). >> I temporarily installed Google Play and made up a temporary >> one-time-only Google account name and then downloaded the Kindle app >> from Amazon Mobile LLC (package name = com.amazon.kindle). > > Seems like a lot of work. While I only have the MIT epub reader on Android in my "books" folder, I already seem to have these four apps on the iPad in my "books" folder: http://i.cubeupload.com/aB3iDJ.jpg Here's a screenshot of what is currently "in" each of these four apps: 1. Overdrive ( http://i.cubeupload.com/r31P6g.jpg ) 2. Bluefire Reader ( http://i.cubeupload.com/Zozxvb.png ) 3. Freading ( http://i.cubeupload.com/GMPCFA.jpg ) 4. iBooks ( http://i.cubeupload.com/tFA0KQ.jpg ) I don't remember where these apps came from but these apps were probably put on there quite some time ago by the kids (who mostly use the iPads). None seem to ask me to register, but the kids may have registered them (I can't tell).

Wrong, as always when it isnt even possible with ebook readers without using a cloud. Corse some are actually stupid enough to manually move the file that contains the record of where you got up to in all your ebooks and which ebooks you have read, between all your devices, but hardly anyone except you is actually THAT stupid. >>> I temporarily installed Google Play and made up a temporary >>> one-time-only Google account name and then downloaded the Kindle >>> app from Amazon Mobile LLC (package name = com.amazon.kindle). >> Seems like a lot of work. Your local library almost certainly has them too but you they may not be available in a format that suits your player. >Are they on youtube? Yes but I'll leave you to do the search.

Thanks for the pointer. Remember, the whole point is the *audio*, not the book, per se. So the *player* has to have the capability of reading out the text in the background with the screen turned off. That's what this thread is about, after all.

Audio books are, by definition, audio. The problem with audio books from your local library is that they will probably be DRM encoded. That means that you will either need to break the DRM or use their application for listening to them. That application will be free but will ensure that you "return" the book on time. >So the *player* has to have the capability of reading out the text I think the computer conversion of text to speech will not meet your needs. Start with real audio books that have been "converted" by a human, preferably a human whose voice you like. TTS will result in a dreary tone that could put you to sleep but you will be startled every few minutes by the gross, often comic, mispronunciation of names that you are familiar with. > > in the background with the screen turned off. > That's what this thread is about, after all. I assume you already have an audio player that allows you to listen without having anything on the screen.

Gutenberg has audiobooks? I think not. You maybe thinking of Librivox: https://librivox.org/ Also, you can easily locate a free software service that will convert from youtube format to mp3 which is what most audioplayers, hardware and software, easily handle.

I think not. Your thinking failure is your problem but in this case there was no need to think. All you had to do to find Gutenberg's audio books was to follow the link that I thoughtfully(!) provided. > You maybe thinking of >Librivox: https://librivox.org/ Also, you can easily locate a free >software service that will convert from youtube format to mp3 which is >what most audioplayers, hardware and software, easily handle.
